2011: The Year In Burgers

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 12/15/11 08:21 AM ET   Updated: 12/15/11 11:20 AM ET

It's pretty fascinating how much can change in the world of burgers in a single year. Conversations and articles about the "best burger" are omnipresent, and pretty much everyone has an opinion on what defines the perfect hamburger. It's been another banner years for burgers, from fast food chains revamping old recipes to upstart chains gaining traction. Couldn't keep it all straight? Click through the slideshow below to catch up on this year's burger news.

Last month, Forbes declared that Smashburger was "America's Most Promising Company." The rapidly-growing fast food chain isn't just expanding in the U.S., the company is opening outposts in three countries in the Persian Gulf: Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The concept of Smashburger is simple, yet smart. You can choose from various items on the menu, or you can build-your-own burger with a variety of sauces, cheese, etc. If you haven't yet heard much about Smashburger, it sounds like you will be hearing more and more in the future.

If I want a Burger. In and Out is it! Jack off in the Box, McMuts, and the rest are trash!
In and Out Hands Down is the best!

Wouldn't it be easier to just put a handgun between two buns with some mayo and call it a day?

I've had almost all of the major burger chains over the years. I don't even really consider burger places like Wendy's, Jack in the Box, or Burger King real food. The burger is so smashed by the time you get it, you can barely tell that it's supposed to be a burger. McDonald's is the lowest on the list. At least Burger King has a flame-grilled flavor to their burgers. I find Whataburger to be in the middle of the road. The taste is okay for the price, but it's nothing fantastic. Smashburger is good, but it is pricey. Be prepared to spend about $10 for a combo meal. Their fries are very good, though. The seasoning they use is great. Five guys is pretty good, too, but they are also pricey. In-N-Out wins, hands down. The burger isn't smashed and covered in grease when you get it. The vegetables actually taste like they were just cut. The Animal Fries are to die for if you're in the mood for a double bypass. The price is also unbeatable. They treat their workers really well, too. They typically get holidays off and they are paid much higher wages than any other fast food place.

In-n-Out is the best for sure. They're better than 5 Guys, and yet still so much cheaper. A double-double meal from In-n-Out is about the same cost as a Big-Mac meal from Micky D's, actually a little bit less I think. and a regular cheeseburger meal will cost you under $5 from In-n-out. And I would still pay over $10 a meal for a double-double than almost any other burger at that price.

Gawd, when I was in Southern California, a friend of mine forced me to eat - and I'm not making this up - a "Peanut Butter and Jelly" Burger. It had bacon and peanut butter and jelly. It was DISGUSTING. This was at some restaurant in Anaheim Hills. Gross!

Jack In The Box use to be known as the last place to get a burger, now it is the Cadillac of places to get one. Everyone here loves them, and they are not that cheap like they use to be. Wendy's has way too much sodium in their food.

I agree with Rich--Five Guys is highly overrated. My husband and I went to our AZ Five Guys for a shake, burger and some crunchy fries. They did not have shakes (that was a deal breaker right there), the burgers were being cooked on a dirty griddle (not over an open flame like decent burgers), and they were taking some greasy, limp fries out of the cooker to serve to customers (so much for crunchy fries). We were so grossed out by what we saw we left without making a purchase so I can't tell you how this stuff tastes.

Too many libs in the cities. The countryside is awesome. Green trees year round, rivers everywhere, we have everything. Desert, mountains, beaches, all within 2-3 hours drive . If you ever have a chance to visit... Go for it. You will absolutely love it here.
