10 Southern-Style Dinner Recipes

First Posted: 12/16/2011 4:04 pm   Updated: 08/31/2012 10:48 am

Southerners have a lot of pride in their food and no wonder why. The flavors are rich, bold and so comforting. And just think of all the love that goes into making a delicious Southern dinner -- it's the ingredient that makes everything taste even better.

Our collection of recipes has all the classics of Southern cuisine, including shrimp and grits, chicken and dumplings, gumbo and so much more. Many offer a lighter twist on the classic recipe, like our shrimp po' boy, which has grilled shrimp instead of fried. Our chicken-fried steak is baked instead of fried and features a lean turkey sausage gravy. You'll enjoy making any of these dishes for dinner.

There's nothing more classic than fried chicken done up the Southern way. Buttermilk tenderizes the meat and the flour is spiked with spices including mustard, paprika and garlic and onion powders. Sprinkle with salt before serving.

This is not southern food. It's like someone visited the Gulf Coast and then went back home to the Northern US and tried to replicate coastal food. None of this is right.

I cannot for the life of me find a decent chicken and dumpling recipe like my granny's was. She died before I became interested in cooking so I never asked her. I just remember chicken and dumplings, no carrots, no celery, no onions. I can still see the pepper, chicken fat and butter floating around those cloud like dumplings. Wish I could tast that again.

Fried foods taste great due to the salts and grease/oils. Unfortunately just like alcohol and driving don't mix, neither does fried food and life longevity. If you do the fried food route remember moderation in all things.

Cracker Barrel is a better example if southern cuisine than this article. Usually, if we have vegetables, they are to the side... not in the meat. Also, what the article is calling dumplings, that would be considered chicken pot pie where I come from. Another thing, the catfish should be fried with fried okra. Everything on that list should really be fried if you are going to call it "southern-style." After all, we aren't know for our healthy ways. By the way, that chicken looked awful. KFC would be better than that. To add to that, why are there so many shrimp dishes? That's a coastal thing. Normally, if you don't live near the beach, shellfish is often a bad idea. Southern food usually revolves around some kind of farm animal or woodland creature.

1. Stop trying to make everything healthy. Southern food is good BECAUSE it's bad for you!
2. Those are NOT southern chicken and dumplings. Southern chicken and dumplings is just that...chicken and dumplings. Only northerners put vegetables in chicken and dumplings.

You have shown great disrespect for a people and a culture you clearly know absolutely nothing about.........in my opinion. Every one of your rude and condescending posts have been a personal attack on my people. You are a classless and uneducated waste.

You have no idea how obnoxious you are do you? And irritating. You have a lousy personality as it's coming across here. You have to be a damned yankee. Never you mind, honey, all of us can't be so fortunate as to be Southern. Now, go to bed and get over it.

I grew up in the north but lived in the south for half my life... and the old fashioned chicken and dumplings is more of the northern style, dumplings in the south are TOTALLY different!

Southern food really is the best comfort food. Maybe one day Huff Post will post an article with Southern food in it and not ... whatever this stuff is.

Al, what in the h are you talking about. You must be from North Dakota. A whole fried turkey, injected with a good spicy marinade, makes setting a garage on fire well worth it.

Ok, don't ever, ever do this. It's incredibly dangerous and not how you fry turkey. To fry a 14 pound bird like the one featured, you cut it into 8 pieces: wings, thighs, legs, breasts. Coat the pieces with a cup of self rising flour, a powdered buillion cube, and a dash of black pepper in a heavy plastic bag. Fry the pieces in a large heavy frying pan same as you would fried chicken.
Keep the pieces in your oven set on warm. When ready to serve, arrange the pieces into the shape of a turkey on a fancy platter and garnish with kale and cherry tomatoes. It will look a lot better than that shriveled up thing the Dean boys made and taste much better....Al-
