NBC Preys On More Game Show Contestant Fears With 'Who's Still Standing?' Exclusive (VIDEO)

Posted: 12/16/2011 10:57 am

Fresh off the successful return of "Fear Factor," NBC is launching another new show that's causing anxiety. "Who's Still Standing?" may not have spiders or flaming cars speeding toward contestants, but it's hardly just a trivia game show.

Based on a hit Israeli show called "Still Standing," the U.S. version is hosted by Ben Bailey, the hilarious Emmy-winning "Cash Cab" trivia master. "Who's Still Standing?" takes trivia to a whole new level, with a $1 million prize up for grabs for those who get the questions right ... and a trick floor that opens for contestants who get them wrong to fall through. Yes, it's a little scary.

No, they're not dropped into a pit of snakes, but as this exclusive sneak peek shows, we don't really know where they go. That's a lot harsher than hearing, "You are the weakest link," or getting whammied -- welcome to extreme trivia, people.

The show premieres next week (Mon., Dec. 19, 8 p.m. ET on NBC), and will have new holiday-themed episodes each night through Thurs., Dec. 22. It'll then finish off its first season run in the Monday night timeslot, from Dec. 26 through Jan. 30.

I want to know who dresses the contestants? Are they really just people off of the street or are they actors? They act and dress so outrageous and most of them are really keeky. Why does it always end the same way no contestant ever wants to continue at the end of the time slot, can't they opt to come back again if they want to.

What do the contestants fall into on the show Who's still standing?

This concept was originally done on 'Russian Roulette' a short-lived game show on the GSN channel. Russian Roulette was very controversial due to the fact that when the contestant fell through the trapdoor, they landed on a pile of pillows. However, the pillows were filled with live kittens. This may have contributed to the show's demise.

OK, the original show was Russian Roulette with Mark Wahlberg.... The other one that hosts antique roadshow and had his own talk show ages ago. I think it was filmed in Canada The original version had a speed round. It was a lot of fun watching the contestants make a quick noise and poof... disappear down this hole. The speed round shuffled and opened holes in a continuous fashion at random. This was on GSN.
I think that other person may have been referring to double dare.. The Hub debuted something similar, I believe last year.

There was a game show before with the same premise. It wasn't particularly good so I have a feeling the novelty of the gimmick will wear off pretty quickly with this one. You want to talk about scary TV shows try watching 'Jersey Shore' or any of the Kardashian show. Now those are some frightening shows.

What about hte BRUTAL "Wipeout" on ABC. I used to find it SO funny - but they have ramped it up so much - I'm surprised someone hasn't been paralyzed or broken a neck yet. It's too painful to watch now. They sure are courting the lowest form of viewer. It is nothing more then BULLYING for profit.

I agree....Wipeout was hilarious when it first started but now it's almost like they are trying to get someone to break their neck just for "entertainment value."

I still love the show. I really don't see much that is more dangerous then before. There was one in the winter episodes that was pretty bad and it didn't appear on the next show so I think they're being careful.

Fear Factor is the modern day equivalent of the Roman Coliseum - people only tune in to see if someone will die or get maimed. Just like NASCAR. Who's Still Standing is tame - they fall into a foam pit. I assume they give them practice falls before. They just never know when they will fall during the game and that is the anxiety. No big. Fear Factor is disgusting, tho.

Ellen's been doing this on her show for years. I hope she gets a cut for the idea.
