Occupy Des Moines Vows To Shut Down Obama Offices

Occupy Obama

By PHILIP ELLIOTT   12/17/11 07:55 PM ET   AP

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Occupy Des Moines activists on Saturday vowed to shut down President Barack Obama's campaign offices and set up a camp outside they plan to maintain around the clock.

"We have every intention to keep this place closed down until we are satisfied," said Frank Cordaro, an activist and founder of the Catholic Worker group in Des Moines.

A handful of activists went to Obama's nondescript office in a downtown strip mall after larger rallies to mark the three-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York. They had hoped to read a statement demanding Obama cut military spending by half and "dismantle our U.S. military empire ... so we can create jobs, balance the budget, meet our peoples' needs here and help the human community to heal our dying planet."

When they arrived, they found the doors locked.

"You wouldn't even have known this was a campaign office," said Julie Brown, an activist who recently moved to Des Moines.

To highlight its tenets, the protesters put up a hand-written sign on cardboard: "Obama's Former Headquarters."

Brown backed Obama four years ago – "he was the lesser of two evils," she said – but has since soured on the whole political system.

"We need a real leader who will put this country back to work," she said.

That anti-establishment flavor runs through the growing Occupy movement that has sprouted up across the country.

"This is not a Republican or a Democratic issue. This is about the whole system being against us. The corporate elites own all of the politicians and they set the agenda," Cordaro said. "What we are doing here is trying to win back our bought-and-sold political empire. We need to dismantle it because there is no difference between George Bush and Obama."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt declined to comment.

'no difference between Obama, and Bush'. Well, yes there is, but there's also something that both guys have in common: Neither one is Santa Claus, and some of these people, apparently want the moon, and a couple miracles besides, and...it might not happen. What if Obama ends up having to send MORE troops overseas, or spending another 1/2 trillion, not to build housing, but to build larger prisons to handle  Read More...

Smooth move dipsticks. Nothing like improving the chances of the republicans. Are you sure you are really Occupy people and not republican plants?

Dumbest move in a century you idiots.

So you would like to see a republican president from the clown circus that is currently running.

Like I said, dumb.

*******

Then maybe they should file an FOIA request for his campaign financial report - (or something) - and see who he is paying - and for what at that location - because that is how candidates funnel money from their campaign coffers = renting location, listing office expenses, salaries - for inactivity - in closed down buildings.

indicted in 2012 - if not before.......that is why he is trying so hard to hang on to Eric Holder as US AG......as the Gatekeeper to his Thuggery -

when 72 members of Congress are demanding Eric Holder's immediate resignation - and the process has started for a "No Confidence Vote" - to force Holder to step down.

Holder should step down - and face charges......along w Obama is he keeps protecting him.

You can be as angry as you want at Obama. But eventually OWS is going to have to get political. The demands can not be so extreme that they are unachievable. Get the money out of politics. The housing and job crisis. And trying to make sure people have food and housing. Without the threat of eviction. When there are so many empty houses and so much need. That jobs that need to be created, incomes rise, children are fed and educated, families are restored.
We CANNOT do any of this with REPUBLICANS\TEA PARTY elected politicians! Especially the PRESIDENT! I think it is imperative that the Occupation start talking to and endorsing like minded candidates. Without a Democratic House, Senate, and Presidency that WE put there we are screwed! We have had a lot of crap thrown in our face especially since2010. The few of us that bothered to vote. The Democrats and Independents stayed home and look what we got DAMMIT! Unbelievable bunch of freaks! I have never seen any thing like these Republicans and Tea Party politicians in my life! The most important thing you can do as an Occupier is occupy the VOTE!

@ patty420:

You got in this mess - because of the Democratic Party - having the Majority in the House ad the Senate for the past FOUR Years - until the 2010 midterm elections - and the Democrats got the worst vote-whipping in over SIXTY Years.

They NEVER had the majority. What they had was 58 with two independents and one of them always voted with republicans. And there were a half a dozen blue dog democrats (now out of office and replaced with actual republicans) who wouldn't back the democratic platform.

So spare us the nonsense they had a majority. They never did.

A good start is for OWS to start talking to the 99% of whom you claim to represent, and their concerns. I guarantee you, it is not rendition.

We will not let you latte drinking liberals hand another election over to another Texans, Rick Perry. Admit that you are clueless about the political process, and please, stay out of the way.

And everyone insisted OWS was pro-Obama. I've been saying all along, that's absurd and untrue.

I'd give their campout and protest a lot more credence in this case if I read an article about how they're protesting outside the republican candidates' offices in Des Moines also.

So, now you can just shut down the offices of a politician you don't like.

Fortunately, I'm sure there's no way this could set a really, really bad precedent. I'm sure nobody will ever think of trying that against a politician YOU like.

It's interesting, though. If a bunch of Republicans had tried shutting down Obama's campaign office back in 2008, you all would have been LIVID. You would have called them every name in the book and said that they were acting like a bunch of Nazis and should all be thrown in jail.

You would have been RIGHT, of course, but that's neither here nor there. They're not the ones who act like this, after all.

Now, everything's changed. This is just what democracy looks like. Democracy looks like interfering with democracy. Hey, why not?

3 month anniversary and still no coherent message, political platform or congressional/presidential candidates from this bunch.

When are they going to organize a serious movement to push the conversation?

Don't they realize that Politicians don't care what they want as long as the money keeps rolling in?

Don't they realize that the only way to effect any kind of change in our republic is with a majority of representatives who support their ideaology?

Petulant children throwing tantrums might get mommy to cave, but it has no effect on a population ready to incarcerate you.

You have 99% support? It should be no trouble at all to get a majority of representative support...

or maybe you are no where near 99% and noone cares about anything you have to say.

Taxed
Enough
Already

Stop the spending money you don't have and get some fiscal responsibility in our government.

I realize how that would be difficult for a small intellect to understand. So I'll try to make it easier for you.

NO MORE HANDOUTS TO CORPORATIONS OR FREELOADERS.
