This evening, my local news reported that thieves are scanning unpurchased gift cards. The thieves are waiting for people to buy the gift cards, which will trigger the activation. Once the gift cards are activated, the money is stolen even before the gift cards are given as gifts. The Better Business Bureau have reported an increase of consumer complaints with gift cards. The recommendation is to buy gift cards that are kept behind the counters as opposed to those displayed to the general public.
