Humane Society For Shelter Pets Allegedly Targeting Humane Society Of The U.S.

STEVE KARNOWSKI   12/19/11 03:11 AM ET   AP

MINNEAPOLIS — The Humane Society of the United States says it's under attack by a new group that's trying to starve it of funding by urging donors to send money to local animal shelters instead.

The society has long been a thorn in the side of some in agriculture with its undercover investigations and campaigns against animal cruelty. It claims the new group is the brainchild of conservative public relations executive Rick Berman, who spearheaded an earlier campaign against it, and that it's supported by big agricultural interests.

Berman won't say who's funding the Humane Society for Shelter Pets.

The new group announced itself two weeks ago with full-page ads in USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and New York Times. They show a sad-eyed dog and ask, "Please help shelter pets by donating locally, not to HSUS," and direct people to HumaneForPets.com, where they can find links to local shelters and more information.

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the HSUS, said he's certain that agribusiness concerns are behind the campaign because he's heard that Berman made the rounds of major trade groups seeking support for it.

"We consider it the highest compliment because it demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that we're the most effective organization in the field of animal protection, and one that industries that have something to hide are most worried about," Pacelle said.

The HSUS has long campaigned for more humane conditions for farm animals, opposing the use of cramped cages for pregnant sows and egg-laying hens and the slaughter of horses for food. It lobbies Congress and state legislatures and frequently launches ballot initiatives to achieve its goals.

Jeff Douglas, co-director of the Humane Society for Shelter Pets, said his organization was formed simply to educate people who want to donate money to shelters. He said about 650 shelters have expressed support for his group.

"People think that when they give to national organizations like the Humane Society of the United States that the money is being returned to localities, but the reality is only about a penny of every dollar raised by the Humane Society of the United States is returned (to local shelters)," Douglas said.

Pacelle said that's misleading because shelters aren't his group's main mission – it's an animal welfare advocacy group. But he also said the society has given $43 million in grants to other animal welfare groups over the past four years alone, helps rescue thousands of animals every year and provides training and services to local shelters and rescue groups. HSUS donors understand its role, he said.

It's easy to confuse animal protection groups and shelters because their names often contain the terms "humane society" or "society for the prevention of cruelty." Usually, they're independent.

Although Douglas said his group only wants to help shelters, the dispute highlights the deep rift between HSUS and those who contend its long-term goal is to reduce meat consumption.

Pacelle denies his group is anti-meat, saying it includes everyone from livestock producers to vegetarians. He said HSUS has a history of working with industry, pointing to its efforts leading to last week's announcement by Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest pork producer, that it will stop confining pregnant sows in small metal crates by 2017.

Kay Johnson Smith, CEO of the Animal Agriculture Alliance, a nonprofit backed by livestock, poultry and other industry groups, said HSUS has "the same radical agenda" as groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which opposes eating animals. The difference, she said, is that HSUS wants to work incrementally to reach its goal of raising the prices of meat, milk and eggs so they're out of reach to most Americans.

Berman owns the Washington-based public relations firm Berman and Co., which runs the Center for Consumer Freedom. That group operates HumaneWatch, which has kept up a steady stream of attacks on HSUS since it launched early in 2010.

Berman insists the idea for the new effort came from others but said his firm has donated more than 1,000 hours of work to help it get off the ground and is providing free public relations and other services.

Pacelle, however, contends the Human Society for Shelter Pets has been Berman's idea from the start. He provided The Associated Press with a memo he said was leaked by "a source in an animal-use industry" he declined to name. In the memo to big donors, Berman lamented the difficulties he was having in recruiting a suitable leader for a project then called the Humane Society for America's Pets.

But Berman also told them HumaneWatch had been "far more successful than I anticipated in re-branding and re-positioning HSUS among a wide variety of Americans. ... HumaneWatch is having the intended effect of chilling some of the donation stream that HSUS would have expected prior to our campaign."

Berman confirmed he wrote the memo but said Humane Society for America's Pets was a different project that never got off the ground. He said that idea came from supporters of HumaneWatch's message, while HSSP was a later initiative by different people, though he used the same corporate shell.

He also said he refunded donations for the first project to contributors who wanted them back, but others agreed to let their money be used for similar purposes.

Neither Berman nor Douglas would disclose who's funding HSSP. Its IRS filing for 2010, prepared by a Berman accountant, lists donations of more than $1.2 million, including 11 of $50,000, one of $100,000 and one of $300,000. Berman said he wasn't one of them. Douglas said the money came from "foundations and organizations that are involved in the pet industry." He said he didn't know if any were involved in agriculture.

"We never tell anyone who contributes to any of the organizations that I'm connected with," Berman said. "Just as the Humane Society does not disclose its donors."

Pacelle said Berman's efforts are backfiring.

"I'm happy to say that our budget has grown substantially during the period of Berman's campaign," he said.

It is about time someone stood up to HSUS and told the truth about it. Berman was optomistic when he said HSUS gives a penny from every dollar for physical support of animals. I have never understood why they can get away with their commercials of sad starving pets when they do so little to actually help them. Please donate to your local shelter-the money will be better spent.

This is what Richard Berman and his 'un-named rich corporate friends' are trying to stop HSUS from accomplishing:

▪ Passing federal legislation to phase out the use of chimpanzees in invasive experiments, reducing pain and distress in the laboratory, and choosing alternatives when it comes to the use of animals for research and testing
▪ Cracking down on the trade in dangerous exotics for pets, and passing laws to forbid this trade and associated auctions
▪ Stopping the slaughter of horses for human consumption throughout North America
▪ Putting an end to the commercial hunt of seals in Canada and Namibia and convincing Japan and Norway to end their commercial slaughter of whales
▪ Ending captive shoots for animals for trophies

If (big IF) that is what their goals are then that is what their commercials should say. They use false advertising and that should be against the law.

People like you should be against the law.

Berman has long been the front man through which corporations have aggressively attacked their opponents without leaving fingerprints. Known to his own friends and enemies alike as "Dr. Evil," Berman has perfected the art of setting up non-profit "charitable" groups to advance corporate interests.

EVEN HIS OWN SON DISOWNS HIM!

Lets hear you rally in support of your hero on this!

The Employee Rights Act is a Fake Employee Rights Destroying Bill pushed by corrupt long-time Senator Orrin Hatch, and written by Disgraced Unregistered Cigarette Lobbyist Richard Berman. Berman is the man who's so disgraceful that his own son has publicly disowned him.

So the "Employee Rights Act" is a deceptively-named piece of legislation written by Berman in order to undermine Employee Rights to be represented by a union. Berman's sponsors, including the Koch brothers and other large corporations, hate the fact that Unions offer protections for workers which cost the grossly overpaid CEOs and banks a few extra pennies. All studies show that Union workers earn more compared to non-Union workers. And studies have proven that the United States Economy was much stronger when the percentage of Union Workers was higher.

lies, lies and more lies......you're busted.

The politics involved in animal rescue is mind boggling. Since emotions are high, the nastiness is unbelievable. You have to have a strong stomach to surrvive to be able to help animals.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG ADVOCATE FOR ANIMALS. I WOULD DO PHYSICAL HARM TO ANYONE THAT I SAW HURT OR ABUSE AN ANIMAL. THEY WERE PUT ON THIS EARTH FOR A PURPOSE AND LOOK TO US TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. SADLY, MANY PEOPLE ARE MORE OF AN ANIMAL THAN THE ANIMALS THEY MAY OWN. ON A DAILY BASIS, I GET LETTERS ASKING FROM ONE ORGANIZATION OR ANOTHER ASKING FOR HELP. I AM SAD TO SAY THERE ARE MANY AGENCIES, BOTH LEGAL AND ILLEGAL, THAT DO NOT CARE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF ANIMALS BUT OF LINING THEIR POCKETS. TO ANYONE WHO GIVES TO THESE CHARITIES, I AM TELLING YOU, LOOK OVER THEIR OFFICES, CALL AROUND, IF YOU CAN. I KNOW THE LOCAL SHELTERS IN MY AREA, WHICH INCLUDES THREE TOWNS AND SEVERAL OUTLYING PLACES, AS THE TOWNS ARE NOT LARGE AND WE HAVE MANY FARMERS IN OUR AREA, DO NOT GET ANY HELP FROM THE OFFICIAL ANIMAL SHELTERS. OUR SHELTERS DEPEND ON DONATIONS, NOT OF JUST MONEY BUT OF FOOD, BLANKETS, CARRIERS, ETC. WE EVEN HAVE VETS TO SCHEDULE ON A ROTATING BASIS, WHO GIVE TREATMENT, SHOTS, ETC. I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME GIVING TO NATIONAL EFFORTS AFTER SEEING ONE HEAD AT A VERY HIGH SOCIAL AFFAIR IN NEW YORK. IT WAS FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO BUY THIS $6.5 MILLION APARTMENT. ONLY INTERESTED PARTIES WERE INVITED. THAT ONE REALLY FROSTED ME. GIVE TO YOUR LOCAL SHELTER. IT'LL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD, I PROMISE.

I understand why you are shouting. If the HSUS can say that efforts to encourage giving to a local shelter are 'starving' them, then something is very wrong. The truth is that HSUS is not using its megabucks to help animals at all. It is using its megabucks to buy political power and to line its own pockets.

As far as I am concerned, shelters can stuff it. I used to support shelters more years ago but now they are ridiculous. I have long given up trying to adopt through them because the process is arduous and expensive.

My most recent encounter was because a busybody neighbor took my kittens to the pound when let loose by the cat sitter. I came home to no kittens, an expensive bill to get them back and now, the mother is rejecting them and one of them is very ill. They were not weaned and the shelter insisted I neuter them or pay an exorbitant amount of money. I do not believe 8-week old kittens should be neutered. They are too young, but I had no choice.

As far as I am concerned, they should have been treated like any other receiver of stolen goods and I have a lot better uses for my money than supporting them.

I don't know what the HSUS DOES. Do they own shelters? Do they lobby? I just don't know, and I don't think many people do. If they do, hey great. But I won't give to any charity where I have no clue about what they actually do. Are they affiliated with the people on that animal planet show, no wait that's the ASPCA. So, HSUS, please just tell people what it is you actually do.

No, they do not own or operate shelters. They give about 1% of their huge income to shelters. They do lobby and they do support legislation that is frequently quite misguided. They also raise and keep money to 'help' animal victims of disasters like Katrina--and then they don't use it to help the animals. They also tried very hard to kill all the dogs seized in the Michale Vick raid. And they pay large salaries, fund generous pensions and build lavish buildings.

Individuals need to educate themselves on who they are donating to, and whether the objectives of the not for profit are the same as their own. Whether it is to an Animal Welfare organization that advocates the need for changes in society like PETA or HSUS, or a local shelter. If you are donating to a shelter ask yourself,. who is running your shelter, are they high kill, do they advocate low cost spay neuter, if not find a reputable local rescue that is helping to find homes for animals in need. A little enlightenment goes a long way to ensure your donor dollars are being spent the way you would want them to be.
11:18 PM on 12/19/2011
They need to get to the root of the problem....which is the reason for the over population of animals in the shelters. They need to make it mandatory for people to neuter/spay their pets, unless they are authorized breeders, or risk stiff fines. Check Craig's list, how many people try to breed and unload their pets for profit. The problem is not the shelters, but the irresponsible pet owners.

The series' on ANIMAL PLANET are good... but if you pay attention you notice there are only a FEW that they actually show that get homes
HOWEVER, this is NOT the HS' fault... but the MORONS that go out... buy a dog/cat and keep it for a while until it's NO LONGER a "CUTE LITTLE PUPPY/KITTEN"... then we take it and chain it in the back yard or just let it ROAM THE NEIGHBORHOOD! SPAY/NEUTER programs are a VERY GOOD idea and need to be THE FIRST PRIORITY...
To the women out there... if you know a GUY that has a dog that they REFUSE to neuter... ask them POINT BLANK WHY??? Most of the PROBLEM is that they have the attitude that it will make the dog "LESS MANLY"! Do your BEST to try and change his attitude... PLEASE! For the sake of the ANIMALS!

be careful what you wish for:

Voice of the Animals Camelot Sanctuary was promoted as a no-kill shelter for sick and unwanted cats — but investigators say the unsanitary, cramped conditions were torturous to the animals. The animals were seized in 2006, and operators Cheryl and Edwin Criswell were both charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor in Idaho.
“It’s the worst in my memory, that’s for sure,” said Idaho Humane Society Director Jeff Rosenthal, who investigated the compound in 2005. “It’s hard to rate. Is 99 starving horses worse than over 400 starving cats and dead kitties in freezers?”
The Criswells each pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. In January 2007, a judge sentenced them to 180 days in jail on each of the 10 counts — almost five years total — but he suspended all of the jail time, according to court records.

Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall said he doesn’t believe the Criswells ever intended to harm the animals in their care.
“They weren’t trying to be cruel. … She had serious mental issues. They both did,” Marshall said Monday.
He said the support for no-kill shelters in North Idaho contributed to people dumping unwanted animals, including those that were sick and diseased, on the Criswells.

The singer Sarah McLachlan and her commercials where she sings Angel pull at my heart strings EVERY TIME I see it. Saving animals could cause me to go deeply in debt if I were not very careful. I hope someone can take Berman down before he does serious damage to the REAL H.S. This guy needs to be watched by a starving watch dog. At least then he would be useful....... feeding many hungry animals.

O.K. You have my attention now and Ive decided to follow you for a while to try and get a feel for you and see if you are as smart as you sound. So I'm sitting on the fence before I cast judgement. Who can truly be trusted when it comes to the welfare of abandoned, abused, neglected and homeless animals if so many agencies are being operated as nothing more than tax shelters. NON- PROFIT organizations are required to apply only the remaining net funds after all overhead expenses have been paid, including the very hefty and handsome salaries paid to the Chief Executive Operating Officers and the rest of the Upper Echelons a.k.a. Executives supposedly managing the Charity. There may only be 1% left to actually to fund the program. This is absolutely criminal and our government allows it to happen.

this is what people should be doing..donate locally..take out the big corporate slice of our money...and also do not donate to rescue groups..they are not the ones that need donations and help from the public..most are filthy and run from someones backyard ...most are just hoarders

Totally not true. There are awesome rescue groups that do more than any humane society. They are activiely out spaying and neutering our of their own pockets. Humane societies put money in the pockets of their top people. And guess what almost all of the animals taken are A euthanized whether sick or not and B those that aren't are usually taken by the rescue groups you are tearing down. And often for a fee they pay. And donors money given th HS to take their so called beloved pet is not passed down to the rescuers.

and always, it's the most innocent who will suffer.

you can't really go wrong donating and volunteering at your local shelters and private charities.  especially the rescues who pull animals from the shelter to give them the chance and care they need.  it's the private rescues who do the real heavy lifting on the ground, and they are constantly starved for funds.  investigate those in your area, and try to do what you can to help.    these harsh economic times are hitting those who cannot defend themselves the hardest.  please help in whatever way you can.
