Twitter lit up with reactions, political commentary and puns on the word "ill" Sunday night as users learned of the death of Kim Jong Il, the former ruler of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea whose eccentricities were often at the forefront of a personal life shrouded in secrecy. Kim's appearance and strange, enigmatic personality made him frequent target of parody and satire.
Usually, when a public figure short of Osama bin Laden dies, reaction tends to be measured and at least a bit solemn, even among comedians. In the case of Kim, however, the response to news of his death was less than respectful -- after all, to most of the world Kim Jong Il is as abstract and removed from reality as they come. It's hard to take seriously a leader whose official biography states that his birth was marked by "double rainbow over the mountain and a new star in the heavens."
Keeping with the tradition of Twitter offsetting reverence, comedians responded to Kim's death with jabs, puns, and a slew of other reactions to the death of the "Dear Leader." Check out some of the best reactions so far.
