Unfriend On Facebook

When it comes to friending on Facebook, who you know still trumps how you look.

A survey from NM Incite, a Nielsen McKinsey company specializing in data on social media, that polled over 1,800 social media users found that 82 percent of Facebookers "friend" people they know in real life, while 60 percent connect with mutual friends.

The study examined why people friend and unfriend on Facebook and uncovered that a small percentage of users employ far less personal metrics to determine who to include in their online social circles. Eight percent of survey respondents had friended people because of how physically attractive they are, while 7 percent friend people merely to increase their number of Facebook acquaintances, 7 percent said they "friend everyone," and 7 percent answered that they will add someone on Facebook because of the "quality of the photo."

"Offensive comments" and a lack of knowledge about a person are the top two reasons people unfriend on Facebook, according to NM Incite's research. People were also more likely to be disturbed by the nature of the content friends shared, rather than the frequency of it: 23 percent said they unfriended people over "depressing comments" and 14 percent unfriended over "political comments," while just 6 percent unfriended because someone had posted too frequently.

A 2011 study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project examining people's social ties on Facebook also found that Facebook users frequently connect with people they already know.

The average Facebook user has 229 friends, 89 percent of whom they've met in person more than once, while a full 7 percent are people the user has never encountered face-to-face. The "largest single group of Facebook friends consists of people from high school," according to Pew, which noted that, on average, Facebook users have 56 friends from high school, 30 from college or university, and 15 from work.

Though no one likes to lose a friend, unfriending on Facebook has grown in popularity along with Facebook's skyrocketing userbase. Unfriending can now claim its own theme song, thanks to Jimmy Kimmel, and holiday, the annual Defriend Day.

See NM Incite's infographic below for more findings from the report, which can be seen here. Why do you friend and unfriend on Facebook? Let us know in the comments below.

My Anxiety & Jealousy were the reasons why I unfriended two relatives, (I was actually jealous of the both of them).

Left facebook because my own "family" wouldn't even utter so much as "Happy Birthday" to me even though they were on facebook frequently enough to see my posts. I always acknowledged their birthdays though. Also left because too many common(as in unfamous) regulars were taking on the "megastar" role of "I have too many IMPORTANT friends on here to talk to YOU". Got tired of being friendly with absolute pretentious jerks and being made to feel weird cause I told someone good morning. Too many arrogant self centered jerks in one place. Facebook sucks! Never going back!

Gossip, shallowness, religious recruiting and witnessing, bragging, hacking, liars clubs, gossip, meat markets, shallowness, intrusive nosy neighbors and family, gossip, too many lists, shallowness, WHY?
I left facebook after one week and a hacking experience which caused me a months worth of grief!
Never going back to that idiocy again!
Let the religious recruiters and witnesses knock on all of the walls they want, lol for forever even.

I go through and clean out my friends lists every now and then for the obvious reasons; no interaction, Jesus fanatics and those who post inappropriate comments or pornographic material. I've deleted family members. Ex's. And the average jo-blow who has no cooth. I have a few on the verge to be deleted. I cannot stand depressive types or those repetitive comments running a joke that was funny the 1st time they posted it, 500 times later, it's effing annoying! I have no problems being deleted, and I don't feel guilty deleting others either. It's my experience and I'll control it as I see fit.

I found that I was "unfriended" when I stated my religious preference was "keep yours to yourself". It is amazing how fast your christian friends cut you out of their sphere of influence when they think you may not be so receptive to their godly rants.

Ha, ha! I was friended by a person I later learned believes that "people of color" are a "natural" new audience for conservative thinking. I was defriended for "defending lesbians" when I mentioned a television show with positive images of black women who happened to be lesbians.

I unfriend folks ALL THE TIME! Lol!
Seriously, if we haven't seen each other in 15 years and I add you and we don't interact, even though I'm trying to interact with you, I just get 'em off my list. Same deal with extended family.
I have unfriended one person over their politics. Dude always posted the "Faux News Talking Point" of the day and it just really irked me.

I only friend people I know and friends of people I know. I've never UN-friended anyone. I do however turn off news feeds from people who insist that know every detail about their life.

I go through my friends list once a year and pare it down. I remove people that haven't ever interacted with me after I accepted their friend request (ie. former classmates or coworkers). I have unfriended extended family members that I never see and/or don't appear to have anything in common with. I also remove anyone that was merely an acquaintance once there's no longer a real-life connection, such as my best friend's girlfriend(s) as they come & go.

The FB experience is what you make it to be. Remember that nobody is forcing you to use the site... and that it's up to you to be responsible about it...

I would never unfriend someone over political beliefs...it's their right to share them, if I don't share their opinion then oh well, doesn't mean I don't like that person. My friends are my friends, I don't accept anyone I don't know/like in the first place. I do have an in law that posts the poor me/boo hoo stuff too much but hey it just takes a second to scroll right past it!!

I have had 1 person "unfriend" me because I called Obama "The Bama" in a post. I took the opportunity to write to her and said that I would not be losing any sleep over it, and mentioned that I noticed that she moved from New Jersey to North Carolina. Then I asked her point blank if she moved because of high taxes in NJ, and if she did, why would you continue to vote for the idiots that gave you those high taxes to begin with. Just saying.

It was but if you unfriend someone for something they said one way or another, were you really a "friend" to begin with? Friends are people you accept for who they are. I could see unfriending someone if they talk bad about you, but the Bama???

You can't. Facebook will sue you for using the word "book." It has happened.

I offend most people that remove me from friends. I am actually okay with that because it is better to not be friends with someone that is going to take everything I say wrong. Lets face it I put my foot in my mouth enough without people making up things to be offended by.

Facebook will begin adding photos of its users to third-party adverts appearing in users' news feeds come early next year, and there's no way out of being featured alongside a tin of baked beans or a pair of knickers on the social network.

The Mark Zuckerberg-run company will set its "Sponsored Stories" feature as default for its 800 million-strong stalkerbase, and there won't be an option for any individual wanting to opt out of being shown on such ads.

Lies. The only way your photos will be used is if you make them "public/everyone" available.
