Ernest Hemingway Cuba: 'Today Show' Goes Inside The Author's Home (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/20/11 08:51 AM ET Updated: 12/22/11 11:18 AM ET

'The Today Show' brought Ernest Hemingway's granddaughter, Mariel, to Cuba to see her grandfather's home, now a popular tourist attraction.

Hemingway's father, Jack, was Ernest's son; as such, Mariel was able to take 'Today' host Natalie Morales for an inside look at the home, which was carefully restored (the home can now only be viewed by tourists from the outside, the Daily Mail reports).

The duo walked through the house for 'The Today Show', showing viewers his typewriter (which he wrote on standing up) as well as his bathroom, where he eccentrically wrote down his weight every day.

Then Natalie and Mariel set out around Cuba, to view the legendary writer's favorite spots.

Check out the tour below.

Hemingway had a room at the Ambos Mundo Hotel on Obispo in Old Havana, which is also a tourist site.

Nice piece, but the Today Show (and Granddaughter) need to do better research. Pilar, the boat in the video was Hemingway's fishing boat, but not the boat that inspired "The Old Man and the Sea/" The actual small fishing boat that inspired the book is being restored and will eventually be placed at the museum. http://talkingcuba.wordpress.com/

Great one...how about pasting a video that can be seen by readers outside America?
Surely, as an international site, HP can at least do that for readers?

I once saw a Cuban movie called "Hello Hemingway". It's about a Cuban girl in the late '50s who lives near Finca Vigia. While reading "The Old Man and the Sea", she dreams of going to school in the US, while never missing a chance to protest Batista's dictatorship.

I saw it on the Today Show. Wish we would be more open to the Cuban people. Benign American influence could speed up Democratic reforms that will arrive.

Growing up in Cojimar, the coastal town were Hemingway kept his fishing boat most of the time, was very special. Despite the fact that I was born in the mist of the back then "vibrant" Cuban revolution, Hemingway’s presence was constant. He was probably the only American we knew about (or at least the government cared about us knowing). I am happy to see his legacy being restored. www.NHInstitute.com
