It's tough to pick an outfit for a sad or somber occasion. What else is there besides head-to-toe black?
Head-to-toe gray, apparently. Princess Mathilde of Belgium attended a memorial service today in the city of Liege, where last week 33-year-old Nordine Amrani opened fire on a busy shopping center, killing four.
The princess and her husband, Prince Philippe, paid their respects to the fallen as well as the 123 wounded at the site of the attack. With thousands in attendance and all eyes on the royal couple, the often brightly-attired Princess Mathilde chose her outfit shrewdly: gray cape-like jacket, gray dress, gray tights, gray gloves, gray pumps and a pastel patterned scarf.
Sound like too much of one color? Not at all. Monochromatic can be chic, tasteful and utterly subdued when done right, as the Belgian princess proved today.
Some days you dress to stand out -- some days, you dress to blend in and let someone (or something) else take center stage. Princess Mathilde knew that today was the latter and got dressed right.
