Dogfish Head's New Gluten-Free Beer: Tweason'ale

First Posted: 12/21/11 02:09 PM ET Updated: 12/21/11 03:34 PM ET

According to Dogfish Head, the beer customers request most often at its pub, brewery and website is a gluten-free beer. Ask and ye shall receive!

"It seems as if lots of folks who have gluten-tolerance issues are pining for an interesting beer," says Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione, "While there are a few well-made examples that mirror traditional beer styles, there aren't any off-centered offerings." Enter the fruit-forward, gluten-free beer Tweason'ale. The classic barley foundation of beer has been replaced with a mild sorghum base, according to a press release e-mailed to The Huffington Post. The beer contains hints of molasses and pit fruit, as well as strawberry notes and an added complexity thanks to buckwheat honey.

Celiac disease affects one in 133 Americans. According to Celiac.com, people with classic celiac disease are intolerant to barley, an ingredient typical of most beers.

Tweason'ale will be released in late January 2012 in 12-ounce four packs. It will be released four times a year. The full label is below.

Check back in after the New Year for behind-the-scenes look at this beer (and more!)

Sadly, a Dogfish Head FAIL: The beer has a pleasant aroma, but an almost medicinal taste and very bitter after taste. Pours golden, but the minimal head disapates in abut ten seconds. Fairly carbonated, almost champagne-like but without the good taste. I could taste the sour-fruit quality for a good while after tasting - not pleasant. Only rates a 3/10 (and that is mainly for effort). Off to have a Raison D'Etre ... now that is a Dogfish Head WIN WIN WIN!

How much gluten is actually in beer?

Does anyone know?

I'm not seeing any evidence that there is actual gluten in beer.

Um... beer's made from barley. Barley contains gluten. A regular beer would leave me sick for nearly a week.

Educate yourself.

Well that's why I asked a question...so you can stop being a pompous jerk.

Well this is ironic. Barley does not contain gluten; it contains the proteins that combine to form gluten when barley is processed. Your are also making the assumption, which might be unfounded, that just because beer is made from a grain that contains proteins that form gluten, therefore beer automatically contains gluten. The reason I asked the question in the first place is because I'm wondering how much the process of beer making 1) actually allows for the formation of gluten, and 2) how the various filtration processes might remove any gluten that does happen to form.

I think I'll wait for an answer from someone who actually knows what they are talking about, i.e. not you.

I'm an IPA man. Gluten is not a problem, but I must say I think Dogfish Head is the best brewery in America.

I don't have a gluten intolerance, but I'm still trying this one! Very curious to see how it will compare to their other beers.

Bart's is a very decent gluten-free (my local Ralph's even carries it..which surprised me). Bud makes Red Bridge which is also gluten-free and tastes like..Bud..(ergo..bland but not disgusting).
This market will grow as Celiac become more prevelant and better diagnosed...now..people..remember NO pretzels if you need gluten=free beer!
