Rick Santorum Talks About How He Would Appeal To Gay Voters

The Huffington Post First Posted: 12/21/2011 9:47 am Updated: 12/21/2011 11:39 am

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum explained how he would win support from gay voters despite his long opposition to same-sex marriage Tuesday night on Fox News' "On The Record" with Greta Van Susteren.

Van Susteren asked how he could get votes from "the gay citizens of Iowa" despite being endorsed Tuesday by Bob Vander Plaats, the president and CEO of The Family Leader. The Christian conservative activist ran an ultimately successful electoral campaign to oust three judges on the Iowa Supreme Court after they voted to legalize same-sex marriage.

"Well, look, I have nothing against gay people. They have rights of every other citizen. But what they did in Iowa and what some are trying to do -- not all gays -- but some are trying to do is change the laws of this country with respect to what the definition of marriage is," Santorum said. "We have a public policy disagreement. I know there are a lot of gays who are strong on national security and believe in lower taxes and getting this economy moving, and welcome them to join our campaign."

(Video above via Fox News.)

He continued, "But if there are differences, I'm certainly going to speak out on those differences when I think it's in the best interests of our country to have laws that reflect having men and women raise children and form solid marriage bonds."

Van Susteren pressed him: "Can you understand the heartache that many of them have when they hear you speak on something that's so near and dear to them, and your policies against them, and then at the same time, you want their votes?"

"Well, you know -- you know, we can have a public policy discussion that says that, you know, certain things -- our laws should be certain ways without seeing it as a personal attack. It's not a personal attack. It's what we believe is best for the country," he responded. "And I believe what's best for the country is to give children their birthright, which is the best opportunity for them to have a mother and a father. ... There are a lot of other important relationships, and I don't dismiss other relationships as important. But there's one essential relationship that's necessary to give children their birthright."

Santorum has frequently spoke of his opposition to marriage equality on the campaign trail. He recently said that if same-sex marriage were legal, then "their sexual activity" would be seen as "equal" to heterosexual relationships. He said in October that he would "die on that hill" fighting against gay marriage.

Santorum is not the only GOP candidate to get questions about gay marriage. Newt Gingrich responded to a gay voter's question Tuesday, saying he should vote for President Barack Obama if same-sex marriage is the most important issue to him.

Rick Santorum has a long history of talking about sex. Here are some highlights:

  • On Contraception

"It's not okay. • On The Definition Of Marriage

"Marriage is what marriage is. Marriage was around before government said what it was. It's like going out and saying, 'That tree is a car.' Well, the tree's not a car. A tree's a tree. Marriage is marriage." "It's like handing up this and saying this glass of water is a glass of beer. Well you can call it a glass of beer, it's not a glass of beer, it's a glass of water. And water is what water is. Marriage is what marriage is." "I can call this napkin a paper towel, but it is a napkin. Why? • On Sex In The Military

"I -- I would say, any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. And the fact that they're making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to -- to -- and removing 'don't ask, don't tell' I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing, and that is to defend our country." Fox News, 2011

  • On 'Man On Dog'

"In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. It is one thing." Associated Press, 2003

  • On The Government Getting Up In Your Sex Life

"The idea is that the state doesn't have rights to limit individuals' wants and passions -- I disagree with that. I think we absolutely have rights because there are consequences to letting people live out whatever wants or passions they desire. And we're seeing it in our society." Associated Press, 2003

  • On Gay Marriage

"This is an issue just like 9-11 ... We didn't decide we wanted to fight the war on terrorism because we wanted to. It was brought to us. And if not now, when?" "The battle we're engaged in right now on same-sex marriage, ultimately that is the very foundation of our country, the family, what the family structure is going to look like. I'll die on that hill fighting." The Morning Call, 2004 Think Progress, 2011

  • On Being A Hater

"You can say I'm a hater. But I would argue I'm a lover. I'm a lover of traditional families and of the right of children to have a mother and father ... Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?" Pittsburg Post Gazette, 2011

  • On The Gay Jihad

"So the gay community said, 'He's comparing gay sex to incest and polygamy, how dare he do this,' and they have gone out on a, I would argue, jihad against Rick Santorum since then." The Hill, 2011

I don't understand. If every child has the right to be raised in a loving home with a mother and a father, and we should outlaw gay marriage on these grounds, should we not also make single parenthood illegal? The foster system will place children with single people, and those who are unmarried are allowed to adopt children. Is this not also denying those children their 'birthright' of having a mother and a father in loving marriage? And when a marriage becomes rocky, unhealthy, unloving, or there is a divorce, shouldn't these activities also be outlawed?

It seems clear to me that these double standards reveal that it is not really about creating a healthy environment for children: it is about a discrimination against LGBT individuals. I think Santorum truly believes that what he is doing is right, but I wonder if he sees the inconsistencies in his point of view?

Let's all go to our mass devil-worshipping, family-hating, children-preying, pedophilic, morally corrupt, society-damning orgies and spread the word: we can be saved by voting for Santorum, who has nothing personal against us!

"It's not okay. It's a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be."

And who said how things are "supposed" to be in the first place? God or man? Anything man declares as law can be undeclared at any given time. It's just a matter of new or updated legislation. Man should NOT be confined to ancient ways and customs forever. As times change, so should man. So marriage can be expounded upon to include all companionships.

Santorum is a creature of old habits and antiquated laws. He cannot be president of this forward leaning country because of his shortsightedness and that's for sure.

Santorum's smugness about his Christian faith and "it," being the answer to all the country's ills makes one pause. He continually castigates gays and lesbians. He talks negatively about couples choosing contraception to limit the family to one or two children. This is the rational solution for families with limited means and a desire for more opportunities for their (few) children. Most individuals do not have lifetime six figure Congressional retirement packages that include healthcare (and dozens of opportunities to lobby for big bucks on the taxpayers backs). Santorum has spent his life on the government teat, espousing Christian morality as the cure all. Isn't this the same hyper-religious fervor we see with much of radical Islam, a violent intolerance for dissent and the alternate view? Isn't this also the reason generations of immigrants have risked everything to come to the United States?

It seems to me that "faith" of any kind is stifling to most folks because if gives them reasons for ducking and hiding behind ancient history instead of dealing head on with man's evolution of mind, spirit, and body.

Santorum simply should admit that he does not appeal to gay voters and that they should abstain from sex or vote for Obama. That happens to be what he believes....

We need a President of the U.S. who will focus on job creation, the economy, our crumbling infrastructure, our failing schools, & international events. Not some kind of J. Edgar Hoover who is only concerned with peeking into the nation's bedrooms.

some are trying to do is change the laws of this country with respect to what the definition of marriage is," Santorum said. "We have a public policy disagreement.

Since this is true, then why do gay people have to pay taxes if they do not have the same rights and privileges that govern our nation? No rights? NO TAXES!

The point is that they are being denied their rights as citizens...therefore, why should they have to pay at the same rate.
Maybe they should only have to pay 50% if they are going to be treated like 2nd class citizens!

WRONG. Gay people get the short end of the stick in all sorts of financial dealings -- particularly taxes.

I'lll assume you're heterosexual, married and have employer-sponsored health insurance. You may pay more than a single co-worker to have coverage for your family, but you pay the standard "cost-sharing" and that's it.

I'm gay. While my partner (of 21 years) and I both have employer-sponsored health insurance, his employer's program is better. So I get my coverage thru his company. At the end of the year, in addition to his regular W-2 for annual earnings, he gets a supplemental W-2 for "IMPUTED INCOME" -- that's money the government considers he earned, despite not having received any cash. What is that money? It's the premium his employer paid for my health insurance, just as the employer does for all married employees.

In return for the same coverage as other employees, we pay the IRS roughly $1,200 in taxes for "imputed income" that no heterosexual couple ever pays. We also pay extra income tax to the state.

Would you like to get into Soc. Sec. survivor's benefits, Medicare, inheritance taxes (there's a doozy for ya), etc.? If you're tired of tax penalties, let's discuss not being able to get multi-car family auto insurance discounts; homeowner's insurance, etc.

If heterosexuals paid the same tax penalties gay people do, we'd have a balanced budget in two or three years.

Rick you're beating an extremely dead horse, and the longer you beat it the more damage you're doing to your party. So bravo mate as far as I'm concerned. By now, in the minds of independent voters (you should know them, they're the people who've been deciding our national elections for the last 30+ years), you're already beyond George Wallace and viewed as something between Anita Bryant and Fred Phelps. It's the primary reason you, Bachmann and Perry are not and never could be serious candidates for national office in our country. What I don't get in your case is, you just lost your re-election bid to the Senate, which isn't easy to do, yet somehow you think your positions are more appealing nationally? Sorry. Nope. Y'all will do well in states where education standards are lowest and that's about it.

One appeals to gay voters the exact same ways as hetero ones: go home and be a father to your sick child instead of wasting everyone's time trying to eliminate human and civil rights for 20-30 million Americans.
