Walmart Pulls Batch Of Powdered Infant Formula From Stores Following Missouri Boy's Death

LEBANON, Mo. — Wal-Mart has pulled a batch of powdered infant formula from more than 3,000 of its stores nationwide after a newborn Missouri boy who was given the formula became gravely ill with a suspected bacterial infection and died after being taken off life support, the retailer said Wednesday.

No government recall had been ordered for the 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn powder with the lot number ZP1K7G. Manufacturer Mead Johnson Nutrition said its records showed the lot tested negative for the bacterium before it was shipped.

But Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee said the company decided to pull the lot "out of an abundance of caution" while health officials investigate Sunday's death of 10-day-old Avery Cornett. The product could go back on shelves depending on the outcome of the investigation, but customers who bought the cans have the option of returning them for a refund or exchange, Gee said.

Gena Terlizzi, spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, said Wednesday that samples of the formula given to Avery were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for testing.

"At this point it has not been determined whether the illness is linked to the formula or an outside source," Terlizzi said in a statement.

The Lebanon Daily Record reported () that Avery was taken to St. John's Hospital-Lebanon late last week after appearing lethargic and displaying what his family said were signs of a stomach ache. He was later moved to St. John's Hospital-Springfield, and preliminary tests showed that he had contracted a rare bacterial infection, Cronobacter sakazakii, the newspaper reported. He died Sunday after being removed from life support. http://bit.ly/vwyAs5

Avery had been fed Enfamil Newborn powder bought at a Walmart store in Lebanon. The store stopped selling the product after learning of his death.

Christopher Perille, a spokesman for Glenview, Ill.-based Mead Johnson Nutrition, said Enfamil Newborn powder is sold at a variety of retailers, but he didn't have information about whether other companies received units from the lot now being investigated.

Perille said all of the company's infant formula products are put through a battery of tests as they are produced, packaged and sealed.

"One of the things every batch of product is tested for is Cronobacter," Perille said. "We went back and checked on the batch in question, and it had tested negative for Cronobacter."

Public health investigators seeking the source of Avery's infection will also look at environmental factors, such as the water used in preparing the powdered formula, and at anything else the baby might have ingested, Perille said.

The Missouri Department of Health is advising parents to follow World Health Organization guidelines for safely preparing powdered infant formula, Terlizzi said.

"This includes washing your hands with soap and water, thoroughly sterilizing all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water and preparing enough formula for only one feeding at a time," she said.

Perhaps it's not formula related at all. And those that are blasting the mother for not breastfeeding. It's possible she was...but was supplementing. OR, maybe she tried, but wasn't producing. (I dried up after only a month. I was devastated that I had to rely on formula) I do also have to wonder if the baby was vaccinated. Perhaps the baby received the blasted HepB vaccine? Maybe an undiagnosed Strep B infection? Whatever the case may be, I am heartbroken for the family. I couldn't imagine the joy of just delivering, then losing the baby days later. I certainly hope they can find peace at this time.

My heart goes out to this poor family during what is suppose to be the happiest times in their lives. It is a tragic thing to experience in ones lifetime. God bless the friends and family of this poor child.
I want to thank Walmart for reacting to this tragedy. They did the smart thing by pulling all the product off the shelf until pending further investigation.
I hope through these tough times, that everyone can still have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years. God bless all who this has touched.

This is NOT about breastfeeding or formula feeding. This is about ensuring that ANY product given to babies is SAFE!!! My heart goes out to the parents who lost their 10 day old baby.

i have to say, it's a bit ridiculous, all this debate here over whether to breast or bottle feed, bc in my experience, it wasn't up to me-- my baby decided he preferred the breast, and refused everything else until he was weaned to a cup. when he was about 4 or 5 months old, i'd have given a breast to get him on a bottle, but he wouldn't have any of it, acted like i was trying to kill him. it's not just up to mom or dad how baby eats, baby will have his say (or her say, my niece was the opposite, she spit out the breast like it was toxic, preferred the bottle), and guess who ultimately makes the choice? (hint: it's the guy with the appetite in question.)

as a breast-feeding mother, there were countless times when i'd have to whip a boob out in a public place and there were stares, looks, whispers among little groups, but eff'em, i had to feed my baby, he ate from my body, so my choices were to either satisfy my infant's hunger as a good mother would, or hide away and never go anywhere, in order to spare strangers the embarrassment of their absurd judgements and hangups. the strangers can take a long walk, and i teach my kids to be aware of them to this day. ;)

They pulled it off the shelf but are not sure that it was the formula. So??? I am confused here. Did only Wall Mart get this batch of formula? I am not clear on what caused the bacteria. I am really sorry for the family of the child and I sure hope that they figure out what the problem really was before more children end up being ill.

Really sad! The word that formula is NOT sterile needs to get out to bottled feeding mothers and breastfeeding moms that might be watching bottledfeed children. So happy that I do breastfeed. It was hard at first and I had a TON of doubts but so worth it and the peace of mind alone at this point is enought to know I made the right choice.

This could've happened any where, any time. It could be the water or if the formula was made in China. Who knows right now? Even if you breastfeed, what you eat/drink also goes to the baby. It's still a matter of choice and this is not what the article is about.

I have four children, 19, 12, 8 and 16 months. I had my oldest at age 24 and the nurses at the hospital gave him a bottle and it was impossible to interest him in breastfeeding. My 12 and 8 year olds were breastfed for 9 and 10 months respectively. My 16 month old is still breastfeeding, literally as I type. She has never taken to an artificial nipple even when I pumped milk. Her eating habits are finnicky and she's just not ready to stop breastfeeding. I'm fine with that as I am a stay at home mom. I often get outraged looks and inappropriate comments when others find that we are still breastfeeding. My response, "I'm really not concerned with your opinion on the rearing or feeding choices my husband and I have made for our child. We will make the decision on when it is time to stop along with our pediatrician. She's fabulously healthy in all ways, emotionally, developmentally and socially...this is what's important, not your outrage or what you would have done." All this I've said to say, to each her own. Mothers that can, will if this is their choice, mothers that can't, won't and thank goodness there are healthy alternatives. It's a personal decision that should be respected and neither side should be disparaged. My deepest, heartfelt condolences and empathy to this family on the loss of their dear one. May you find some solace and peace of mind and heart.

Isn't amazing? Extended breastfeeding is something you should be getting big kudos for, and some people think you should be chastized, as if you are harming your child when you are actually doing something so good for her. I breastfed for 2.5 years and am so glad I did. I would do anything to help my son be the healthiest and smartest he can be. Every so often I hear people say ignorant comments like "if a "kid" can verbally ask for it, time to wean." Well, my son spoke his first words at 5 months. Anyway, big kudos CassieE14!

Thank you so much! I too, believe in the advantages, but would never dream of insulting someone who didn't breastfeed. I can't say for certain that my breastfed babies are any MORE or LESS anything versus non breastfed babies....my oldest in particular. He's just as smart and well rounded as he probably was meant to be irregards. LOL Great that you breastfed for so long. To me it's also about the closeness, she is our last one and it melts my heart when she asks for her 'mi-mi'.

OMG.....My heart goes out to the family that lost their lil boy!!!!! How crazy is this that i run into this news about Enfamil Powder newborn milk??? And I say this because my niece/god-daughter drinks that milk and i just took it back on Tuesday telling them that the batch that we bought was no good, it had my niece's stool looking nasty and the milk smelled spoiled.....So they took it back and we bought a different one.....Yesterday my niece Sophia was acting like she had a stomach-ache and her stool was still coming abnormal......So my mom said maybe it was due to the milk that we took back......Oh boy was it!!!!!! I read this this morning soon as i was done reading it to my mom she made an appt. with Sophia's pediatrician........Hopefully its not as bad as it sounds!!!!!

Scary. Time to switch brands? Maybe your niece is lactose intolerant. My son was, and he had to have soy everything. I breastfed him, so that meant I was the one who actually had to have soy everything.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family of this sweet, little baby. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. That being said; in the first place, sometimes it isn't physically possible for some women to nurse. I tried but couldn't because my milk supply was insufficient, and not enough to feed my children. Even before formula was invented there were women who couldn't feed their babies. That's why they had "wet" nurses. "Wet" nurses no longer exist, so some women have no choice but to feed their babies formula. In the second place, practically every store in America sells Enfamil formula. It is made in the United States. I personally don't shop at Wal Mart, but the formula could have been purchased anywhere; the fact that it was purchased at Wal Mart is irrelevant. And, in the third place, just because this heartbroken, grieving mother gave her baby formula doesn't mean they are poor, uneducated, young parents. Millions of babies from every walk of life are fed formula every day. Instead of all the sarcastic, self-righteous comments people should be posting their condolences. Losing a child is the hardest thing a mother will ever go through in her life.

Totally agree with you. If I thought the mother was logging in here and reading these posts I would certainly be posting condolences to her. But I'm pretty confident she's not spending her time on HP tonight. My prayers do go out to her.

Posting information about the benefits of breastfeeding over formula feeding is not self-righteous, it's simply factual. Research demonstrating the benefits of breastfeeding has piled up since you had newborns yet the rates of breastfeeding have not increased at the same rate. Why is that? When there is new research and facts relating to the health of newborns we all have a responsibility to be open to that information....not defensive.

Breastfeeding educators have to continuously battle the defensiveness of mothers who made their decision to formula feed 10, 20, 30 years ago. In any breast feeding discussion they chime in, defensive and upset that they are being "picked on". So not true. That is so not the point. It makes no sense to insult a decision made in the past, it helps no one. I'm confident that 99% of all mothers want the best for their babies.

As women, we can only move forward, that is, if we can stop being defensive about the past.
