Rich People Lack Empathy, Study Finds

Rich Empathy

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/22/2011 12:23 pm Updated: 12/22/2011 12:25 pm

Social psychologists are making an argument that Occupy Wall Street protesters have been saying for months: Many rich people just aren't in the habit of thinking of others.

According to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley, people who grew up in economically comfortable circumstances are less attuned to the suffering of other people. In multiple trials that involved both questionnaires and physical-response tests, the researchers found that young adults whose upbringing involved some degree of financial struggle were quicker and more likely to register signs of empathy than young adults who came from affluent backgrounds.

Such conclusions are especially relevant now, as the Occupy movement continues to focus national attention and criticism on the growing divide between rich and poor.

While some wealthy people have defended themselves as merely embodying the ideals of American capitalism -- a system where, the argument goes, anyone can make it to the top if they're willing to work hard -- many Occupy protesters have offered a less flattering theory: that the rich, as a class, simply aren't concerned with the well-being of anyone else.

The findings of the UC Berkeley team seem to suggest that this might be true, though the researchers make a point of saying it's likely the result of inexperience on the part of the rich, not necessarily malice.

"It's not that the upper classes are coldhearted," Jennifer Stellar, a social psychologist at UC Berkeley and the lead author of the study, is quoted as saying in a press release. "They may just not be as adept at recognizing the cues and signals of suffering because they haven’t had to deal with as many obstacles in their lives."

This particular piece of research appeared earlier this month in the journal Emotion, but one of the academics involved in the study, psychologist Dacher Keltner, has published at least twice before on the correlation between economic struggle and empathetic response.

Last October, Keltner was part of a research team that found that wealthy people had greater difficulty reading facial expressions. In August, Keltner and others argued that financial security seems to be associated with an impulse to think about oneself more than others -- and that a dozen separate studies had produced the same implication.

But the relationship between wealth and compassion may work both ways. In 2005, researchers found that if a stock trader suffers from some kind of emotional impairment -- that is, brain damage that prevents them from fully experiencing their own emotions -- it may allow them to make more profit on the market, since they can make decisions based more firmly in rationalism.

And in what may be a more extreme example of the same phenomenon, research published earlier this year suggests that some stockbrokers actually have a more pronounced competitive streak than diagnosed psychopaths.

As one of wealth, I can tell you with all certainty that I purposely lack empathy. The poor are poor because they are genetically inferior and do not have the brains, stamina, or skill set to amass wealth. You can't circumvent Darwinism, to the victor go the spoils while the conquered suffer. Personally, I enjoy this power and won't shed a tear for the working class trash that have neither the drive, education, or genetics for success. As a matter of fact, I feel it is a great disservice to the rest of us worthy that we support these parisites in any way. Mother nature is adept at killing off those not worthy to live; 10,000 years ago someone who was blind or disabled starved to death because they could not hunt whilethe hunters got their choice of game and mates. Today, the deciding factor is not physical prowess as much as it is mental and genetic prowess and the luck of the draw which decides whom the Alphas and whom the betas are in society. Greed is a virtue that keeps us productive, so as someone with wealth, do I feel empathy for the family that my company is about to foreclose on? Not anymore than a hunter feels empathy for the deer that he had just shot. You may call it "cruel" but it is Darwinism at it's finest, and since it is going in my favor, I couldn't be happier with the current status quo.

I applaud your brutal honesty. It paints a very vivid picture of the narcissistic personality so prevalent among the upper levels of corporate America. It also smacks of someone who lacks life experience. I've found that the most empathic, among both rich and poor, are generally those who have experienced the most adversity themselves.

We can all take solace in the fact that change is inevitable. Enjoy the "current status quo" it likely won't last forever.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that all rich people, as people, lack empathy. A sense of entitlement is what separates those who have the capacity to empathize from those who do not. Many rich people's upbringing involved a huge degree of financial struggle which is why they became resolved to avoid the same circumstances. Good parental role models, invested in raising children who not only have the capacity for compassion but feel an ethical, moral responsibility to contribute, have children who see the broader picture and are aware of the interconnectedness of all beings and the world they inhabit. Those whose mentality centers around self absorption and greed foster the same in their progeny. What to me is most disturbing about this article is the money - (money that could be spent on the poor) that is being spent "researching" what has been evident since the beginning of time: that greed is born of greed.

Some rich people are selfish. Others may be unaware of the situations of homeless people or ones making low wages.

Therefore, you cannot judge and say that all rich people are greedy and arrogant.

What you just said is made pretty clear in the article: "It's not that the upper classes are coldhearted," Jennifer Stellar, a social psychologist at UC Berkeley and the lead author of the study, is quoted as saying in a press release. Moreover, that lack of empathy among the rich applies to congress, the administration, and the courts, nearly all of whose members can be defined as "rich."

Reason TV is a joke. Who doesn't know that?
And any studies showing that liberals give less charity (as shown by IRS filings, usually) fail to take into account that liberals don't give just so they can get tax write offs. Their donations are not for tax-saving purposes but to encompass the real meaning of charity. Liberals don't itemize as often as the rich right, because that's not why they do it in the first place. Plus, liberals surely donate less to paternalistic churches, which accounts for a lot of right-wing donations. Get it?

Why do conservatives give more to charity than liberals (re IRS info)???Another reason might be that conservatives lie more on their tax returns. Since many constantly assert that taxes are theft, that constitutes a justification for exaggerating charitable donations. If you think something is unfair, you are more likely to lie. If you feel your taxes are stolen, you are totally justified in exaggerating charitable contributions to take back what is rightfully yours. If you believe taxes are justified, you are much less likely to do this.

A philosophy which is founded on self-interest is much more likely to justify cheating on your taxes.

The fact is that the conservative states (and within states, counties) are poorer than the liberal states and, ironically, are subsidized by the Democratic-leaning states and counties.

Here is a specific comment from http://www.udel.edu/johnmack/frec682/red_state_blue_state.html

(from the Census's Consolidated Federal Funds Report)." Their most recent data from 2005 reveal wide discrepancies across the 50 states. At one extreme, "winners" such as New Mexico, Mississippi, West Virginia and Alaska received about $2 in federal spending for each $1 they send to Washington in taxes. At the other extreme, "losers" such as New Jersey, Nevada, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Minnesota got less than 75 cents in federal spending for each $1 they send to Washington." Is this charity or theft? Or is it dreaded government welfare, which conservatives tend to hate but benefit from.

Bluntly put, conservative areas receive a transfer of wealth from Democratic-voting states and counties. So while conservatives claim they give more to charity (which I suggest is suspect ), liberals, as a matter of fact, pay more taxes at a higher average rate and are, in reality, subsidizing the conservatives areas.

I noted that Romney's entire charity contribution was to the Morman Church.
From Mormonthink.com:

" The PBS special 'The Mormons' estimated the LDS Church is worth some $80 Billion. That estimate is probably low given the secrecy involved. It's likely worth over $100 Billion as it is the wealthiest per capita religion in the world with annual, mostly tax-free revenues estimated to be $6 Billion per year (per Time magazine back in 1997). The LDS Church owns 928,000 acres in North America, is the largest ranch land owner in Wyoming, is the 2nd largest land owner in Nebraska (Ted Turner #1), has the largest cattle ranch in 48 states (Adjacent to Disneyworld in Florida), is the largest foreign landowner in UK. The LDS Church owns several businesses, numerous radio and television stations, its own insurance company, and is rumored to be the largest single producer of commercial beef in the USA . They own enormous properties in Hawaii including a Marriott hotel franchise in Hawaii, They also own shopping malls, are involved in property development and own enormous quantities of stock in many corporations."

Luke 16
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

booyah, as an atheist (well I follow the teachings of Jesus but reject religion as delusion), I find the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus a compelling work of literature. Of all the crap that is in the Bible, this story is one of the great teachings available to anyone regardless of their religion or lack thereof.

Do you understand that the karmic torment of the Rich Man is a direct result of his lack of empathy? As Romney said recently: "I don't worry about the very poor....."
This parable is about people like Romney. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

And who made that chasm? The rich man, by his actions. Call it the bible or karma or what goes around cones around - it's a pretty universal feeling among those less fortunate.

I was born into an upper middle class family in the mid 50's. I was the youngest child - 17 years the junior to my oldest brother. We were not rich, but we were quite comfortable. My older siblings have far less empathy for the poor than I and my nearest sibling do. I think the assassination of MLK, happening when the two of us were pre/early-teen, and impressionable, made a lot of difference. Even growing up in the Deep South, the classism my parents tried to instill in us never made sense. I guess, like MLK, we preferred the words of Jesus over the words of John and Paul and the Old Testament prophets.
08:32 PM on 12/28/2011
This makes perfect sense. Studies have shown the rich are more often Liberals. Studies have also shown that Liberals give far less to charity. It isn't much of a stretch to be able to show that they give less because they are blind to true suffering.

part 2:

Thirty-six percent of children born to parents in the lowest economic quintile remain in the lowest quintile as adults.
Eleven percent of children born in the top quintile move down to the lowest quintile as adults.
Only 7 percent of children born into the bottom wealth quintile make it into the top quintile as adults.
Children born to parents in the middle of the wealth distribution have an equal likelihood of moving up or moving down in the distribution
3 years ago"

So 89% of those born in the top quintile remain there, while only 7% born in the lowest group rise to the top. This evidence seems to refute your claim that most top earners were not born on top. The research was done by Tom Herz of , American University
