Residents of East New York found what they thought was a wolf roaming their streets on Thursday. Turns out it was a hybrid between wolf and a dog. Police officials found the female wolf-dog, approximated to be three-years old and 53 pounds, wearing a collar and chain suggesting the animal was kept as a pet.
The Daily News reports that the animal was found on Elton Street and Vandalia Avenue. No one has come forward to claim the wolf-dog, which comes as no surprise because such wolf-dog hybrids are illegal to raise in 40 states including New York. Yet, roughly 300,000 to 500,000 are believed to be here in the US.
A spokesman for New York Animal Care and Control Richard Gentles said the wolf-dog was being watched for at a nearby shelter and that, "She's in an unfamiliar environment so she's nervous and shy, but otherwise she's in good condition."
Her future is uncertain but Giles stated she would not be put up for adoption or released into the wild. The animal will however most likely end up in a shelter for unwanted wolf-dogs.
