James Ramseur, Berhard Goetz Shooting Victim, Dies Of Drug Overdose On Anniversary

One of the shooting victims of famed 'subway vigilante' Bernhard Goetz was found dead yesterday of an apparent drug overdose.

James Ramseur, 45, was discovered at the Paradise Hotel at 2990 Boston Road exactly 27 years to the day of the Goetz subway shooting.

Police say prescription bottles were found in the hotel room with their labels scratched off. And while Ramseur's death is being treated as a possible suicide, no note was found.

On Dec. 22, 1984, four teens approached Bernhard Goetz on the subway and asked him for $5, they claim. Goetz opened fire and shot all four black teens. Goetz immediately became a very polarizing public figure, says the Daily News. "Goetz said he opened fire because the teens tried to rob him -- a claim that left New Yorkers divided over whether he was a hero fed up with subway crime or a racist who overreacted."

Ramseur fell into a coma after the shooting and had to undergo multiple surgeries.

Months after the shooting he was convicted of helping rape a pregnant teen at gunpoint and served 25 years in prison.

He got out on Aug. 26, 2010.
