Rick Santorum 'Pop Up' Ad Highlights His Family, Conservative Values (VIDEO)

Posted: 12/23/11 11:40 AM ET

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's latest TV ad looks like it's straight of the 1990s. Using a style borrowed form VH1's hit show, "Pop Up Video," in which little text bubbles gave viewers tidbits of information about the song and production process, Santorum's spot seeks to tell voters that he is a family man with strong traditional values.

While his music may be sappier than some of the VH1 show's subjects -- and perhaps less so than others -- the information Santorum provides all seeks to build on the conservative narrative that he's been driving through his keenly focused Iowa campaign.

Santorum and his wife, Karen, "have been married 21 years," an "info nugget" explains. "All the Santorum children were homeschooled," another one reads. The ad also takes the opportunity to tout statements by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, both strong figures in the GOP's Christian conservative base, in support of Santorum's positions and character.

After dedicating the vast majority of his campaign to retail politics in Iowa, Santorum is currently seeing a bounce in the polls in ahead of the state's Jan. 3 caucuses. He's leapfrogged from sixth place to fourth place in recent polling there, and has sought to fuel this momentum by increasing his ad buy across the state. This commercial is the latest product of that push.

Being homeschooled must leave one feeling very intellectually insecure. I mean, you have really never competed against anyone in your life and never been exposed to any teachers, besides likely your own mother. Parents should be deeply involved in the learning process by reading to children and taking them to cultural places likes zoos and museums, but being solely responsible for their education leads to a  Read More...

I would have thought Rick's group would have thought more about this pop up style ad. I am sure we will be seeing some humourous and insightful response ads. Unless he is going for a new Internet mime. His old Internet mime is getting a bit old. Still funny but old.

I wonder what happened to the pop up ad that talks about his wife having to have an abortion? And the other one that talks about him trying to outlaw it.

Yes, Rick's kids were home-schooled.

And Rick stuck the good taxpayers of Penn Hills Pennsylvania with the bill for the private charter school. And as an added bonus: Rick never really lived in Penn Hills, or Pennsylvania, while he was in Congress--he lived in Virginia and used a house he owned in Penn Hills as a mail-drop. The house was rented out--no way the Santorums lived there even occasionally.

These wealthy republicans are always touting ' home schooling..What they fail to realize is that the average parent/s can't afford to forgo employment to make it happen. That just shows how out of touch they are with the average American!

Homeschooling really does not work. The way to see the world past the walls of your living room is by going to school, seeing other students and in that way they can see that not everyone is the same. Santorum is so focused on these ideas against everyone who isn't a straight white Christian, how can he expect to be president of a country in which he does not approve nor support a portion of the population? The way to be a leader is by representing and respecting all of the citizens in which you have been appointed by and not being afraid to let your children be a member of society.

the way to see the world is to spent time in a prison like situation where your civil rights mean nothing and you're subjected to random violence ?
03:42 PM on 12/27/2011
First, public schools are not a prison-like environment. Public schools and teachers are not supported, that is why the first thing politicians like Santorum like to cut funding to is schools. If a school has problems it is because of the people not taking part in making it better. I went to a school that had those problems, programs that kept students safe and occupied were cut. It was diverse, large and there was violence but going there gave me the insight that not everyone is the same and not everyone was in a good situation... Second, I don't see how civil rights are taken away at school, that is where students learn them.

Isn't there something about them actually ripping off the tax payers because of special course they demanded when they moved to Washington into another school district? Like all politicians complaining about feed off the government teat, Santorum is probably one of the worst.
