Wim Wenders' 3-D Architecture Documentary And Rejection Of 2-D (VIDEO)

Wim Wenders

Hat tip to Indiewire for pointing out an intriguing development this morning: German director Wim Wenders ("Wings Of Desire," "Paris, Tx"), who vowed he'll never make a 2D film again after the revelation of his 3D documentary "Pina," is working on a second 3D full-length doc, on architecture. Auteur enough to wear blue horn-rimmed glasses (see above), Wender is a new, surprising and extreme evangelist for the technology, which he says will revolutionize film-making for the good.

In the Documentary Channel interview that broke the news of the film, Wenders explains why 3D "started on the wrong foot" in Michael Bay territory and is now answering a higher calling:

People were only thinking in terms of big budget action and effects-driven language. Then slowly they came to realize that wasn't the entire picture...it's not clear that the narrative [film] really is enhanced by the 3D, while in the documentary it is obvious...But they have to be conceived like this...If you just think, 'Oh, there's 3D, let's use it,' that's not going to improve the film at all. You have to think it in 3D from the beginning, and then I think it has an immense value, it's a really huge leap for filmmaking overall. I'm totally sure.

Indiewire has a depressing rundown toward the article's end on the magical-sounding movies Wender almost made but tabled for one reason or another. We're hoping this doc has a brighter future -- if anyone can flesh out the potential of a potentially terrible new technology, it's Wender, whose works are the movie equivalent of Korean Sannakji -- a little too alive, and better for it.

Buried in the original interview is Wenders' promise that he'll "definitely" make a non-documentary, or as he calls it, "narrative" 3D film in the future. (Perhaps they can be "enhanced" if Wenders does it?). He also waxes a bit on the upcoming documentary, and our "sense of place."

Head to the Documentary Channel for the full interview, which is well worth a read, and check out the clips we've posted below: a trailer for "Pina" (in theaters now), and above that, a clip of Wenders' 2010 3D short, "If Buildings Could Talk," which Indiewire thinks may be the basis for the new documentary. We wonder what Wenders would say about the limitations 3D poses on the internet; the clip below wouldn't be nearly as blurry if the film were 2D.

If anyone can gibpven 3d artistic credibility, it's this guy. Wings of Desire is one of the finest films ever made.

"Director Wim Wenders Is Making 3D Highbrow"

But still incredibly annoying.

If 3D can be made unobtrusive, I'll give it a chance. But what bothers me about 3D is that it isn't really three dimensional, because I am unable to move and interact with it. There is no space for me to move in, and it is my movement which brings the three dimensions of nature to life. Instead, I am forced to sit in a fixed point while actions happen around me. I understand that it's really the same story as watching something in two dimensions (the fixed point thing), but at least then I am able to choose how I build up the pictures relevance as opposed to it being thrust on me.

I think if you really want to experience entertainment in three dimensions, go to a play.

The trailers above show how unobtrusive 3D can be, and as the article addressed Michael Bay style action and kids movies are not really the best representations of the technology. If thats your only experience with 3D you probably dont have a great grasp of what its capable of.
09:20 AM on 12/24/2011
No, I understand that. Like I said, I'm more than willing to give it a chance. Though I have seen a number of attempts that did not really achieve its intended goal. (Full disclosure: I live in Los Angeles with a bunch of arts departments/directors that are in love with the medium, so I have been shown a number of examples).

Still, I find it a really personal experience how you relate to it. And for me, I find the subtle composure that comes with the "window" of cinema what draws me to the medium. If Wenders and others are able to retain that subtlety, and make it available to mainstream cinema, I'd be excited.

As it stands now, even taking into account attempts at making it "gentler," I have found it obtrusive to my experience. It's a subjective claim, and I make no pronouncements on its objective value. But as long as there are people like me, I think moving the whole medium towards 3D would be severely limiting to those who don't care for it.

3D is for babies and we will look back and laugh at the trend just as we did for 40 years after the 3D explosion in the 1950's.

Obviously you dont know how subtle it can be..... Or how different 3D is now compared to the 50's.

2D, 3D, 4D--it all comes down to how much granite does one leave behind?
Also the sheer resplendence of grass-stained dungarees and urine-soaked sheets.

Hm....no famous blockbuster movies under his portfolio...so...3D? WHO CARES???? I'll stick to 2D thank you very much. Until 3D can be enjoyed without those heavy, dark glasses, I prefer 2D.

Yeah, because Michael Bay's work is just AMAZING and talent is always warmly met by the masses right? Haha.

Man, that trailer is the bomb. Sorry if that dates me, I just couldn't find another word. Back to the trailer, the coordination of motion, space, step and music really speaks this man's idea.
Can't wait to see the finished project. BTW, what kind of glasses will be needed?

If you do what he does, 3D works.

If you make the Great Gatsby in 3D. You suck.

I want to see more "normal" stories shot in 3D rather than the same kids and sci-fi films.

I agree. Right now, studios just use it as a tool to extract money. They don't hire people to think about how it will be viewed, lighting, movement scores, etc. The film language needs to change with the technology. Avatar was done well but I think new directors will exploit it much better. Imagine if the same artistic quality that was applied to The 300 made it to 3D films.

Oh well, I guess we'll just have to endure some more cocaine induced garbage for the purpose of attracting the low info consumer. Example of a 3D failure that shouldn't have happened for such a film, Tron!

Cocaine is a helluva drug.

Actually, cocaine is an incredibly boring drug. Mick Jagger says so too, and I am sure he has far more expertise than I do. Remember how John Landis did so much cole he ruined the Blues Brothers with that stupid car chase through. The mall. Then there was the Twilight Zone disaster. Don't toot and film.

Pairs, TX, jeez, saw that movie in '84 or '85 in Santa Barbara. I was just thinking about that movie earlier today...something in that flick really grabbed me...(I was a little kooky myself at the time)

Great movie. Very sad though. Great director.

I wish I can FAV you 100,000 times.

People just don't get it!

Our brains are already smart enough to take what's on the screen in 2D and transform to 3D in our brains, why REQUIRE the USE of SPECIAL GLASSES just to get this act completed?

because people are getting lazier as time advances. we are not challenging our brains to project inward, and that results in a less dimensional thinking process. the net result is the erosion of creativity in all aspects of society, from art to science and technology. it sounds like a stretch of reasoning, but there is actually a growing body of scientific literature that supports this idea. we are literally making our brains lazier by doing all the work for it.

Cool, don't be lame and approach it in that shiny Art Center style. Really think about what 3D means and employ it in a manner that surpasses how we perceive it.
