Jordan Romero Climbs Mt. Vinson Massif: Calif. Teen Becomes Youngest To Climb 7 Summits

12/24/11 08:40 PM ET   AP

BIG BEAR, Calif. -- A Southern California teenager became the youngest person to successfully climb to the summit of the seven tallest mountains on Earth's seven continents, according to his website.

Jordan Romero, 15, called his mother Leigh Ann Drake on Saturday to confirm that he'd achieved his goal of reaching the top of Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica.

The Big Bear, Calif.-native beat the record previously held by British climber George Atkinson, who completed the ascents at age 16 in May.

Romero's team began the climb Wednesday. Romero's Facebook page, "Find Your Everest," marked reaching the summit, but the climb is hardly over.

"It's in the books. The kid and team summit with all fingers and toes. Descent still to come then we celebrate," a post to the Facebook page read.

Romero completes the climbs with his father and stepmother.

"It's my dream we are following to the highest points on every continent," Jordan says on his blog. "I know it's a big goal and lucky for me my family is supporting me every step of the way."

At age 10, Romero climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, and at age 13 he climbed the world's highest mountain, at 29,035 feet, Mt. Everest in Asia.

Drake declined further comment, saying the family is not seeking attention for the boy's achievement.

You go climb 7 peaks and come back and tell me?

These climbing expeditions cost tens of thousands of dollars. The only truly remarkable thing about this child is that he has a family with lots of money that they are willing to throw away so he can claim a useless record. If he were digging wells and building hospitals in places where people have absolutely nothing, then he'd be able to say he really accomplished something.

At some point you need to realize its useless to spend every waking day of your life feeling bad for others and just enjoy what you have.

Yeah, I love how some people expect everyone else to wear sackcloth and ashes all the time; it doesn't work that way, and it's not healthy to expect it to work that way.

If he wants an adreneline rush, he should try walking through Oakland at 2am.......
Then he can do it it the worst cities in the US Detroit, Philly, Washington DC, Memphis, etc. Then he can celebrate that.

It's sad they can't raise the funds to sponsor something more worthwhile.

You people who are pounding Jordan as being a rich and spoiled kid just have no clue what so ever. I live in Big Bear Lake, have known all of them for years. Ever since Jordan was born. Patroled with Paul at Big Bear Mtn Resorts years ago and I still do it 40 t0 45 hours per week. Have known Karen for the same amount of time. Did the first Counquer The Bear event they did in 1999 and have a piclture of our team sitting on Castle Rock with Karen in the middle. The entire family is super athletic. They are not attention seeking people, they love adventure. The money comes from sponsors and donations from folks in Big Bear. And Jordan does go to school here in Big Bear.

This gives the jealous and jaded a good forum to express anger over their own unhappy lives by tearing down someone else's accomplishments.

I completely agree with you. Some people just can't deal with reality and achievements by others.

good greif folks, he's just a 15 year old High School sophmore that loves the outdoors and climbing. Yes his folks can afford/ encourage his adventures, his dad is an athlete as well. Our local businesses support him. There is a book about his Everest climb available in bookstores that helps fund him. Yes he actually does CLIMB he is not hauled along by sherpas, nor is he compelled to do this by his folks for recognition. Really when / why is it a bad thing for a kid to have a goal and achieve it? Better this than so many kids that turn to drugs and crime for fun.

It just. Doesn't. Matter.

Dang! Why are so many people bashing the kid? He's 15, for crying out loud, so yeah, parents are funding the trips... so what? Unlike the majority of kids in his generation, he set goals and is accomplishing them to the best of his ability. It takes incredible mental and physical toughness to do what he's done, even with the help of Sherpas and all that.

Good for you, Kiddo, for not sitting around playing video games and droning around on facebook all the time and for actually setting a good example to your peers! I'll cheer you on!

Yes, huffpuss commentators. Christmas is over. Time to start passing out all that hate and jealousy you've been hoarding. Why not start w/ a kid in your sights?

Not seeking attention for the boy. Oh no. Duh.

So his parents have lots of money for teams to climb mountains and this is an accomplishment how? I guess she I was 15 I was going to school and my parents were putting food on the table, I like my life better.
