Stevie Oedipus Wonder, Lost Blind Dog, Reunited With San Antonio Family

Posted: 12/24/11 03:48 PM ET

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A blind dog that was lost and believed to be dead is reunited with his San Antonio family for Christmas, thanks to Craigslist, a teacher and an animal care agency.

The San Antonio Express-News reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/unONGF) that nearly a month after Stevie Oedipus Wonder disappeared, the cairn terrier mix puppy that was born without eyes is home.

Stevie's owner Belinda Gutierrez says she thought she was going to end the year on a sad note.

The dog showed up at the Animal Care Services on Dec. 11. He would have been euthanized, but a high school teacher agreed to care for him over the holiday. Then she found the lost dog notice on Craigslist, and Stevie went home Thursday. He's getting doggy treats, carrots and toys for Christmas.

True story. When I was 12 years old in 1992 my family owned a blind beagle (glaucoma) who was 13 years old. On Christmas eve whe went to church approx. 4.5 miles away and the dog got out by accident. He followed us and was only 1 mile away from the church on the same path we took when someone found him and called animal control. We got him back on Christmas day.

I will never forget this story as long as I live and it is a reminder that animals are capable of amazing things. This is a cool story, and there are many opthers just like it.

People- Spay & neuter your pets! Breeders, stop breeding! There are already so many unwanted & abandoned dogs & cats, that we are killing them every day! This is so wrong! Don't take in a pet if you cannot afford to pay for it. Every being needs healthcare. It costs a lot of money. If you don't have any money, don't adopt.

This is a good example why they shouldn't be so quick to euthanize animals - great story and I am so thankful for that high school teacher who volunteered to care for him over the holidays. God Bless you!!!

I played this video and my dog started whining. (she's a pound puppy). Please consider rescue the next time your family is looking for a loving companion animal.

A note on chipping your dog ... I've done a lot of volunteer work at animal shelters, and I've seen plenty of dogs come in with chips. However, I've seen a number of situations where the owners never went online and registered the chip with their contact information. Those dogs' chances of ever being reunited with their owners are DRASTICALLY reduced.

Register your chips!

The real hero of this story is the teacher who agreed to care for him, otherwise this dog, a beloved family member, would have been euthanized - killed - by the shelter. The amount of killing at shelters happening all over this country is mind-staggering. Please check out your local shelter - they should be keeping tame dogs for longer than a few days before 'euthanizing' them. Too many family pets have been killed before the owners are able to locate them!

Shelters have to kill dogs and cats...plain and simple. There are simply too many unwanted and abandoned animals coming in through the front door every day and not enough room to keep them. So, the ones that haven't been adopted get killed....and it's not the shelter's fault at all. The fault lies in the public out there who don't spay and neuter their pets and contribute to the unwanted puppies and kittens and also with the ones who abandon their pets. Don't blame the shelters....they do the best they can. Blame the people who put the animals there in the first place.

actually I'm not blaming any one entity - although I do think a shelter should not kill a tame animal within a few days. They should be held at least a month. However, I do blame - more than those that don't spay or neuter their pets - the puppy mills that churn out so many dogs. They are a primary contributor to animal overpopulation. And I blame people who after having a dog or cat for a year or so, just dump them at the shelter to be put down. I have adopted several of these poor, traumatized little pets. It take them months to years to trust again, but once they do they are wonderful.

Some do but most do not. Case in point, Memphis Tennessee who does monstrous things to their animals. I.e., the "workers" have been videotaped fighting the dogs before killing them. Memphis is a horrible place and the cretins who work there are just that, cretins.

This is a wonderful story, but the bigger problem is that we don't spay and neuter to keep the population down. Humans breed too often also when they can't take care or themseves, but they are supposed to be smarter than the dog.

Currently we have four dogs in our household, all rescues one way or another, and in the past have had as many as 9 or 10. The latest of the current canine family members is a beautiful young Lab who as far as we've been able to find out was abandoned last summer. This was a wonderful story to read the day after Christmas -- I can't imagine what we'd have gone through if one of our babies had disappeared.

Gotta say, though, that if that were one of our dogs he'd get more than carrots on Christmas -- more likely an extra helping of turkey.
