UFO Hoax In Connecticut Offers Lesson In How To Report 'Alien' Visitations

The quiet of a rural strip mall in Connecticut is suddenly interrupted by the appearance in the sky of a glowing blue-green disk. Shoppers stop in their tracks, staring at the unexplained craft moving up and down, back and forth.

But it's all a hoax, a very clever ruse concocted by Marc Dantonio, the chief photo and video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network.

And he did it for a very specific reason for a National Geographic Channel special, called "The Truth Behind: UFOs," airing this month.

"They wanted me to do some image analysis, and when they said they were looking for some dramatic videos to kick it up a notch, I suggested to them that I could create a functional UFO that we can actually fly," Dantonio told The Huffington Post.

Dantonio knows a thing or two about building sophisticated working models. His Connecticut-based company, FX Models, creates special effects for the History Channel and the Learning Channel, and has contracts with the U.S. Navy, Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.

So Dantonio set up his UFO hoax at a mall in Winsted, Conn. To do it just right for the National Geographic cameras, he launched three separate nine-minute flights.

"They used several main cameras -- one to gauge crowd reaction -- but they wanted to film it in ways that didn't look obtrusive," he said.

"Our point was to illustrate that technology can cause confusion, and we succeeded. And after we flew it, we totally exposed the technology so people could see exactly what we did," said Dantonio.

What he and his company created was a "quadcopter" with a 4-foot circumference and an X-shaped configuration that had motorized propellers at each end of the X (pictured at right). Several inches beyond the propellers was a big circle of lights.

"My mission was to try and build a vehicle that would be big enough to be seen from a great distance, but small enough such that I wouldn't need exorbitant power requirements to get it up into the air," Dantonio explained.

"We flew it out from a big field behind the mall and then shot it vertically up and maneuvered it around, [and then] dropped it down to a lower altitude and shut off the lights on it. Then we rocketed the thing up in the air about 800 feet and turned the lights back on."

Numerous people said it looked like it vanished from one spot and reappeared in another -- a typical UFO eyewitness account.

"We wanted to hit that UFO myth and show how it can be accomplished with technology," Dantonio added.

WATCH Marc Dantonio create and fly his UFO hoax:

The overall point of this little UFO charade was to help people report UFOs in a way that better separates the truly unknown aerial objects from those that are easily explained.

"With the number of people who have recorded UFOs with their cellphones, there's a much higher likelihood they're going to capture objects in the sky. But not all of these things are true unidentified flying objects," said Dantonio.

"My main tenet of doing this production was to show how there's existing technology that can fool you into thinking you're seeing a real UFO," he said. "The more people are educated, that's the way we're going to find a real UFO someday."

OK, so what, you can create a UFO with your high tech machinery and lights, big deal!
Now stop with all the BS of making citizens look like fools and tell the truth about what is REALLY out there!!! You people are ALWAYS trying to make people look like fools when there truly is something going on. We are tired of the truth being hidden from us, tell us what we want to know!

Might there be a connection between these UFOs and humans? Why haven't other species evolved as dramatically as we have?

With a test like this how do they expect people to react?
Some one going out of there way to plant a hoax just to prove that people panic and assume before rationalising?
He's playing off of human nature to try and prove that what he believes in is the only alternative. This study was so one sided I don't see how anyone with a mind in this matter would make it a final judgment.
They saw exactly what it was, an unidentified flying object. And makeing it maneuver like a UFO in a typical UFO sighting is going to produce the result that almost anyone who is'nt in denial would think. Alien.
Although I believe that most of UFO sightings are'nt what they appear to be, I also believe that alien life is real, and they have visited.

Those pictures look exactly like some of the pictures from the movie "The Abyss" Interesting study. People's reactions to different things. In college I did a whole research paper on how many people would stop to pick up a quarter vs. a penny...the only thing was I had glued them to the ground. People were funny to watch trying to fight to get $.25 off the ground but they wouldn't even bend over to get the penny. Research is fun. This was probably an expensive hoax, but it is a very interesting looking UFO.

It baffles me why anyone would want to create a hoax when the objective is to find the truth for the human race. If in fact someone does create a hoax that is believable it's not like you can or would come forward to gain notoriety for the hoax. I don't get it.

OK, OK I give up! There's no such thing as UFo's, The loch Ness monster isn't real. there's no God and Bigfoot is a hoax. Ghosts aren't real either and anything to do with the paranormal is trickery or mistaken perception. Gee . . . the world just became a very boring place. : (

PS Just kidding ; )

The article doesn't really say anything other than they conducted a test using a well made fraud and highly tecnological craft. Most people do not have any of these resources as they used. The test therefore is illogical. Sure people can make a less believable hoax so what were they really trying to say? I am a critic but this attempt to attack those that have see something (whatever is was) is purely and attack on humans as a wittness. Human testimony can be flawed but we still use it in a murder trial and that can be used to kill people.

Listen to Coast to Coast AM on the radio at night--you'll be more well-informed than the govt would like us to be!!!! For us to think we are the only life forms in the universe is the height of conceit and denial.

Let's see:
1. We aren't in another Great Depression.
2. The financial system is still in one piece.
3. Health insurance companies can't screw us as easily as they used to.
4. Got our guys out of Iraq.
5. Killed more terrorist leaders in 3 years than Bush did in 8, including what's his face, oh yeah, Osama Bin Laden. You know, the guy Bush said he didn't think much about anymore.
6. Yes, I still have a job, despite the best efforts of Republicans and their Chamber of Commerce cronies to send it overseas, so yeah, things are working our pretty well.

1. Project Blue Book Special Report 14, a scientific study of UFOs by the US government, stated that 22% of all the cases they studied were unexplained, AND the more information they received about those 22% the LESS they could be explained. Go to bluebookarchive dot org and look for special report 14.

2. July 29, 1952 USAF orders pilots to shoot down flying saucers, do a google search for "flying saucers air force shoot 1952". Even the air force considered ET-UFO real enough to try to shoot them down.

3. April 7, 1952 LIFE magazine in cooperation with the USAF makes a case for ET-visitation, do a google search for "Life-google books magazine April 7, 1952", page 80.

4. Jul 28, 1952, Air force admits that they have detected on radar and visually flying saucers AND that they may be interplanetary craft. Go to google News ARCHIVE search for "washington merry go round air force saucers" Jul 28, 1952.

The reason why the powers that be may want to hide the existence of these beings is multiple: intellectual, scientific, technological, and military would be rendered obsolete or seen as primitive when compared to these beings.

Also there is the religious question, two problems, either these beings created humans for some purpose and acted as gods 1000's of years of ago, OR they have been with us for 1000's of years and had recording devices in the time of the bible, or any other time when religious texts were written. If either is true it would be devastating, the first one is obvious the second one not so much. What if they could prove that certain religious figures were or were not divine, almost overnight religions would be verified or falsified.

This would not mean God doesn't exist, even the Aliens had to have a prime creator, rather it means God is radically different from what we have been taught.

The government seems to be quite pleased when the populous is frightened. Look how much energy was put into convincing us that a small group of terrorists with no army, navy, air force, marines, infrastructure, financing or industrial base was a threat to our existence. The defense budget would go through the roof, making a lot of people very happy.
