Picasso's iconic works are embedded permanently in our collective art memories, yet there are so many pieces just as mesmerizing and innovative which remain buried in the genius' archive. Now viewers will finally get a chance to see a diverse and thorough collection of Picasso's drawings from throughout his entire life.
Picasso's Drawings, 1890–1921: Reinventing Tradition combines the classical and the avant-garde in a collection that will display at The Frick Collection, New York and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. There will be over 50 drawings at each venue. Picasso's drawings depict a life's devotion to breaking and rebuilding the idea of art, from his ambitious art school assignments to his signature cubist masterpieces.
According to The Frick Collection: "The show will demonstrate how drawing served as an essential means of invention and discovery in Picasso's multifaceted art, while its centrality in his vast oeuvre connects him deeply with the grand tradition of European masters." The exhibition will also examine Picasso's interactions with his inspirations and competitors and how he re-imagined their visions with his own. The show features loans from important public and private collections in Europe and the United States.
Picasso's Drawings, 1890-1921: Reinventing Tradition will be at The Frick Collection until January 8, 2012.
