Eric Dondero, Former Ron Paul Aide, Addresses Newsletters

Ron Paul Newsletters

First Posted: 12/26/11 01:31 PM ET Updated: 12/26/11 01:42 PM ET

As more evidence surfaces that Ron Paul knew about the racist and homophobic messages of the 1980s and 90s newsletters he published, a former senior aide to the congressman has come forward with a lengthy statement attempting to absolve Paul of racism while detailing shocking incidents involving Paul and gay supporters.

Eric Dondero writes on Right Wing News that his former boss "is not all bigoted towards homosexuals" and supports their rights to do whatever they want in private. He is, however, "personally uncomfortable around homosexuals," as the following story shows:

In 1988, Ron had a hardcore Libertarian supporter, Jim Peron, Owner of Laissez Faire Books in San Francisco. Jim set up a magnificent 3-day campaign swing for us in the SF Bay Area. Jim was what you would call very openly Gay. But Ron thought the world of him. For 3 days we had a great time trouncing from one campaign event to another with Jim's Gay lover. The atmosphere was simply jovial between the four of us. (As an aside we also met former Cong. Pete McCloskey during this campaign trip.) We used Jim's home/office as a "base." Ron pulled me aside the first time we went there, and specifically instructed me to find an excuse to excuse him to a local fast food restaurant so that he could use the bathroom. He told me very clearly, that although he liked Jim, he did not wish to use his bathroom facilities. I chided him a bit, but he sternly reacted, as he often did to me, Eric, just do what I say. Perhaps "sternly" is an understatement. Ron looked at me directly, and with a very angry look in his eye, and shouted under his breath: "Just do what I say NOW."

Dondero goes on to relay another display of Paul's "discomfort" with gays, years later at a Surfside Beach party:

"Bobby," a well-known and rather flamboyant and well-liked gay man in Freeport came to the BBQ. Let me stress Ron likes Bobby personally, and Bobby was a hardcore campaign supporter. But after his speech, at the Surfside pavilion Bobby came up to Ron with his hand extended, and according to my fellow staffer, Ron literally swatted his hand away.

According to Dondero, Paul is not racist (as evidenced by his frequent hiring of blacks for office staff), but again there are significant caveats.

He is what I would describe as "out of touch," with both Hispanic and Black culture. Ron is far from being the hippest guy around. He is completely clueless when it comes to Hispanic and Black culture, particularly Mexican-American culture. And he is most certainly intolerant of Spanish and those who speak strictly Spanish in his presence, (as are a number of Americans, nothing out of the ordinary here.)

Dondero claims that while Paul is not an anti-Semite, he is "most certainly Anti-Israel" and wishes the Israeli state did not exist. But Paul has "no problem with" American Jews.

The controversial newsletters, which are filled with slurs against gays and African-Americans, have recently made their way back into the news cycle to haunt Paul's presidential campaign. Paul has denied writing them, but as more old videos turn up showing Paul promoting and even taking credit for the newsletters, it will be hard for him to continue to deny involvement.

Read Dondero's full statement here.

part two ....http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2011/12/ron_paul_eric_dondero_greenhut.php Reading more about him I am reading pissed off employee not something to take to the bank. Now I have heard in these forums Paul is not ELECTABLE. Why because the media says so? Because the Corruption is so bad in the Republican Party does not want Paul to screw up their gigs? Standing back he looks like a lib with a republican footing, spend less and cut taxes. Okay what gives , he has predicted problems and warned us, his history shows he walks his talk, he does not accept corporate donations, he refused the congress perk package and only wants 39 grand instead of 400 grand most presidents want. He is a constitutionalist and after Obama betrayed all americans with the NDAA bill and resigned the Patriot act anyone voting for him must need to live in a Police State,. SoI think to myself yeah this is a smear campaign and its Pauls turn. At this point I know a vote for him will not take us back 200 years in fact it just might be better
then we have ever had it before. I see people following their dreams and being creative with business again. I do see liberty and freedoms that Obama tried to take away.

part one... In the begining Being a Occupy Supporter I knew the best way to get action is to find someone who could address the issues Occupy had in someone who was running for office in 2012 so I started learning about who all was running, their platforms where was their head is at and then I found Ron Paul. Okay I was impressed and yet concerned was this guy to good to be true? He was touching on things in his platform I alone had hoped for. Yes I did not agree with it all but 97% is a good deal in my eyes. So I dug deeper and then WHAM here come reports he is a racist? Had to dig there and found answers and thought about it logically. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Rockwell this guy was a ghostwriter for those newsletters. Was Paul just not going to point a finger and take the heat? He addressed them in 2008 and if he was speaking truth at this time would it really matter what he said? He was not going to please everyone and his answer seem to me logical. Now we get past this a bit and all of a sudden this guy Eric shows up and makes claims yet doing more research he sure worked with him for a long time and never got it on tape?

As long as he never legislated his preferences it shouldn't matter. On the other hand DADT repeal almost didn't happen under Obama, he should be the one they're mad at....

Wow HuffPo do you work for the Romney campaign now? This is rag journalism....

If you want to get to the truth, watch the video interviews of Ron Paul. You will question the derogatory statements here, and elsewhere. If his campaign visits your city, GO SEE HIM. He is not what these editors say he is...he is a good man. He has a great record. He works hard for his constituency, and his congressional vote is not for sale. Never has been. You can go with the status quo, and elect from the other bidders...all of whom will do nothing but keep us at war to feed the defense contractors....or you can research Paul. Don't believe the editorials. Go see the real interviews. This man has not become a millionaire by holding office. The others, well...

Eric Dondero is a hatemonger and former Cain supporter. Here are some of his comments:“The big problem right now is Islam and Islamism invading our country. And if they want to continue to move in, we need to fight back. Their culture is coming here.”

I find it interesting there are so many bloggers in this column with 0 fans who are attempting to defend Ron Paul by disparaging his ex-aide.

I'm wondering if all of you are the same people? Are you getting paid by the word or the post? And most importantly, how can anyone unemployed land the same position? Maybe Ron Paul can assist in bringing down the country's unemployment rate by default.

This shows volumes about what Ron Paul really thinks of GLBT people. Why anyone would vote for this bigot is beyond me.

that one of his disgruntled ex staffers said he didn't want to use the bathroom of a homosexual friend 25 years ago speaks volumes to you, clearly shows you are looking for those volumes anywhere you can get them. Even if ron paul did not want to use the bathroom it could have been for any number of reasons. I have many homosexual customers and there is one that keeps all manner of sex toys on display in his bathroom. I don't like to use it because i am not comfortable. I have no problem using most other bathrooms. Does that speak volumes to you? I can tell you this, you would be much better served as a homosexual with ron paul as president than almost any other candidate. Why someone voting for him is beyond you is not beyond me. I have it all figured out.

Huh. Another person with 0 fans defending Paul. So is payment by the word or the post? How can someone unemployed hook into your gig and make a little dough here?

"Let me stress Ron likes Bobby personally, and Bobby was a hardcore campaign supporter. But after his speech, at the Surfside pavilion Bobby came up to Ron with his hand extended, and according to my fellow staffer, Ron literally swatted his hand away."

So Eric Donera writes that his former boss "is not all bigoted towards homosexuals" ? If we switched the word homosexual to black, would he feel the same if his boss didn't shake the hand of a black "hardcore campaign supporter"? Change it to , Ask if Paul's actions are excusable for a candidate who is "uncomfortable" with an avid supporter of any religion, sex, or ethnicity.

Oops !..."Change it to ," is there by mistake.. a remnant of a partialy deleted senntence.

this isn't even third person, it's fourth person. an unnamed staffer allegedly told a disgruntled ex employee he swatted away a hand. Subjective much? hearsay much? what makes you think if he did swat his hand away he did it because the person was homosexual? the fact that you guys are debating such second hand minutiae so seriously reveals the truth that you really don't have anything substantive to say. Why don't you spend more time on important issues like ron paul being for homosexual rights and against bigotry as he has stated and demonstrated many times?
