Autism: A Year In Review

Autism

First Posted: 12/28/2011 8:00 am EST Updated: 11/07/2012 3:44 am EST

In the United States, we've seen a fifteen-fold increase in autism diagnoses over the past two decades. In fact, it's currently estimated that almost 1% of US children have an autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), while the rates in US adults are largely unknown. Autism is described in the DSM-IV, listed as a disorder usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. Autism is further categorized as a pervasive developmental disorder, falling within the autistism spectrum, along with Asperger's and PDD-NOS.

Autism is characterized by impaired social development, limited communication skills, and repetitive movements. Autistic individuals may have dysfunctional mirror neuron systems, which are involved in imitation learning and empathy. The mirror neuron system is thought of as the neural basis for human social cognition, and anatomical studies show a significant reduction in cortical mass of brain areas directly populated by mirror neurons in individuals with autism.

The causes of autism, however, remain unclear. Genetic factors, dysfunctional cell-to-cell communication, and even environmental factors such as teratogens (chemicals that cause birth defects) have all been implicated. Indeed, ASDs may be as unique as the people who live with them, and a one-size-fits-all explanation may never be sufficient. One thing we know for certain is that there has never been a legitimate link found between autism and vaccine use. The science simply does not support childhood vaccination as a causal factor.

In a special issue of Discover Magazine released earlier this year, five intriguing yet largely speculative causes of the disorder are discussed. From an autoimmune hypothesis to a model of impaired mitochondria, these provocative explanations challenge conventional wisdom, and may, in fact, open the door to a new way of thinking about ASDs. We have learned a lot about autism recently, and with each new discovery, the picture grows clearer.

Both children and adults with ASDs appear to have difficulty connecting social cues with a personal emotional experience. Interestingly, they are largely immune to the highly "contagious" yawn. In a study performed on yawning behaviors in young children, only 11% of autistic children aged five to twelve-years-old caught yawns, as opposed to 43% of matched controls.

In multiple clinical studies, oxytocin, the hormone implicated in human bonding, has been shown to improve social skills in adults with ASDs. Compared to placebo, autistic adults taking oxytocin demonstrated an increased ability to understand emotional speech, improved identification of cooperation in a simulated social setting, and even a reduction in repetitive behaviors. This is an exciting development, since there is currently no known medical treatment for social or communication problems, aside from intensive behavioral intervention.

Last year, a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience provided convincing evidence that one of the first signs of autism is excessive brain growth. Although children are usually diagnosed between the ages of three and four, secondary to behavioral problems and delays, it is notable that autistic children have measurably larger brains within the first year of life. Although no cure for autism exists, earlier screening tools may lead to earlier behavioral interventions.

Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls, and until recently, researchers could only speculate as to a genetic or hormonal cause for the discrepancy. But, in a study released earlier this year, a gene-hormone interaction that appears to be largely implicated was identified. Retinoic acid-related orphan receptor-alpha (RORA) is a gene that indirectly controls production of sex hormones via an enzyme called aromatase. In the brains of individuals with autism, the way these neurochemicals communicate seems to be dysregulated, causing lower than normal levels of RORA proteins and aromatase, and a significant buildup of testosterone. This could explain why boys are so much more commonly affected than girls, since high levels of estrogen appear to protect against dysfunction of this system.

Another recent trend I've noticed in the scientific literature is one that celebrates the unique perspective, focus, and creativity seen in the autistic community, instead of fixating on deficits alone. The human side of autism is beautifully displayed in a recent issue of National Geographic, wherein photographer Timothy Archibald presents "Echolilia," an expose of his child's autism, and a joint effort between father and son to learn more about the minds of one another, minds that often feel frustratingly inaccessible. In addition, a New York Times article published just this week tells the romantic story of Jack and Kristen, two young people who love one another in spite of, or perhaps by virtue of, the daily autistic experience. Stories like these remind us that the science and humanity of autism are inextricably linked, and we cannot know one without knowing the other.

My child is ASD and when she had her MMR it left a dent in her leg, that never went back to normal. Now she's under investigation for Rheumatoid Arthritis, both knees already injected. Let's hope that the science comes before the squabbles and those kids out there get some help.

I could not agree more psuedoscienece is not science. Have you seen what they are calling "science" in vaccine research? There is nothing wrong with being Pro-children and Pro-parental consent. Not one parent can give true "informed consent" if they have been denied to see all the information. If you have followed the comments on this thread you would have seen that our government has gone above and beyond to make sure parents are not allowed to see a fraction of the evidence…much less the whole picture. If you are strongly for vaccines and you know for a fact they are not causing these damages, and you know for a fact they can withstand real outside scrutiny, then you should demand they are not allowed to seal the CDC vaccine database, or any prior court cases revealing vaccine damages, or strip us of our constitutional rights to a jury trial with a real judge in an open court where reporters, and the public, are welcome to see all the evidence for themselves. The fact remains that IF vaccine injuries were so rare and not causing all of these damages then drug companies would have been facing isolated "rare" lawsuits instead of thousands of lawsuits which is why our own government began to systematically attack the constitutional rights of parents with harmed children to run cover for the drug companies.

I'm very surprised that no one has mentioned the recent CBC (Canada) "Nature of Things" program that presented film evidence from a Chicago family, of remission from severe autism by treatment with Vancomycin. The theory is that Clostridium bacteria in intestines produce neurotoxins. The child re-developed the symptoms when the antibiotic was discontinued. Ethiopian community in Toronto shows a spike in Autism cases unlike their relatives back home. They are investigating changes in diet for possible causes.

I remember that story because it indicated dysregulation in the gut of ASD kids.

Laura de Magistris and colleagues at the Second University of Naples reported that 48% of 90 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients patients have GI problems

Williams, Buie et al in 2011 also looked at the gut and microbiome

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21949732

* The GI problems experienced in the two groups ... were similar with the majority suffering from food allergies...

* Regression - 2008 -Cases had a high rate of CPEA-defined behavioral regression (loss of language and/or other skills following acquisition), 88%, compared to published rates of 20–40% for the general ASD population

* Regression 2011 - 87% of AUT-GI subjects in our study had behavioral regression.

* gene expression analysis indicated that...14 out of the 15 autistic children had deficiencies in expression

* Expression levels of disaccharidases and transporters were associated with the abundance of affected bacterial phylotypes. These results indicate a relationship between human intestinal gene expression and bacterial community structure and may provide insights into the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal disturbances in children with autism.

That shows quite clearly a relationship between GI disease / immune system and "Regression" in Autism.

To my mind it also highlights what John Walker-Smith and his team were trying to initialy elucidate in 1998 a unique GI process / disease pathology. How ever it should be worded.

It also highlights that parents were reporting a real rather than imagined event ...

[2011 Nov] Journalist Brian Deer Drops BMJ Editor Dr Fiona Godlee Head First in Brown Stuff Over Wakefield Fraud Allegations
Dr Fiona Godlee, Editor-in-Chief [for the moment] of the British Medical Journal is “up to her neck in it” current “electronic chatter” suggests.  She alleged Dr Andrew Wakefield committed fraud.  Godlee came out with the allegation in a BMJ Editorial in January, having been convinced by her commissioned author, the occasional journalist, Mr Brian Deer in a piece she published for him in January this year.

But now, when challenged over the reliability of Mr Deer’s allegations by the Journal Nature, the oldest and most respected science journal in the world [and no doubt to Dr Godlee's horror], Nature reports “Deer notes that he never accused Wakefield of fraud“: Fresh dispute about MMR ‘fraud’: Nature News 9 November 2011 | Nature 479, 157-158 (2011).

[2011 Aug] Fresh Fraud: Brian Deer’s Vanishing Writing By Jake Crosby

Brian Deer is the reporter spearheading the current smear campaign against Dr. Wakefield, the lead author of the 1998 case series about children who developed autism and bowel problems after their MMR vaccinations. Deer falsely accused Wakefield of altering data. Yet, a new discovery reveals Brian Deer drastically altered the content of a copyrighted 1994 article he authored for The Sunday Times newspaper.

[2011 April] Brilliant Wakefield Lecture – Shows BMJ Editor’s & Deer’s Fraud Allegations Were Fraud Themselves

This is an excellent recent lecture by Andrew Wakefield in Austin Texas in which he shows how Deer and BMJ Editor Dr Fiona Godlee perpetrated their own fraudulent allegations that Andrew Wakefield committed fraud when that was not true and in fact impossible.  The fraud is entirely by journalist Brian Deer and the British Medical Journal. What Andrew Wakefield also shows is how the work at The Royal Free Hospital with his colleagues not only found a new bowel disease in autistic children but also how the results of that work have been and are today helping autistic children recover some normality in their lives. You can also read in detail how it was impossible for anyone to have committed fraud.  Neither Dr Godlee nor Brian Deer have been able to answer these points.  So who are the fraudsters? http://youtu.be/i6DuBR_xGQg

Hey Sharon and longlocksf, its been kinda fun but I'm bored now and I don't want to play with you guys anymore. I hope others decide to participate here because it would be kinda irresponsible of me to leave this thread to just you two.

Normally I spend 99% of my time on the nuclear power threads. You should drop by sometime. I'm going to quote a post by a friend of mine now. Tell me if you agree with him:

"Ever notice there's a striking resemblance between the anti-nuke and the anti-vaccine crowds? Maybe we can get Jenny McCarthy and Helen Caldicott to star in a YouTube video together. They can tell us how a combination of the MMR vaccine and fallout from Fukushima will wipe us out as a
species within a generation."

Hey Silken17 are you as persistant in ignoring the truth in the nuclear power industry as you are on the autism debate. You ignore facts and promote your agenda so I wonder if you also do this in your chosen nuclear power industry?

My 2nd message will be only technical...
I hope some comment of some independient engineers.

The General Electric Corporation designed all these failed Mark-1 reactor ‘containment’ systems. The GE Mark-1 has been openly identified as a nuclear hazard for decades. These defective GE Mark-1 and GE Mark-2 so called ‘containment’ systems should have all been removed from service years ago. But GE has massive political and media clout within the USA. “The world is your oyster”, describes the General Electric Corporation. GE has held clear title to the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court for over a century. GE cannot pay their part of the damages. The damages are too immense. GE cannot even afford to pay back their share of the profits from their knowingly, willfully defective Mark-1 designs.

LOL!

Well Sharon, you seem to confirm PoloniumMan's theory that the anti-nukes and anti-vax people belong together.

If you have gone as far as researching the Berkeley link you should consider joining the nuke threads. However, you should spend some time just reading them first. Most of us have been there a long time and posts like this one were argued long ago.

Btw, Even though I think the existing nuclear fleet is safe and has an outstanding safety record I'm a big advocate of new Gen IV nuclear technologies like LFTR. Go to youtube and search out some "LFTR" videos. Then join us on the nuke threads since your side of the debate could use some help. :)

Best of AofA Scientists and Drug Companies Scheme to Avoid FDA Scrutiny and Exploit US Vaccine Programme Immunity Against the Public Interest

Dec 29, 2011 Just eight days after the Supreme Court of the United States ruling granting vaccine manufacturers virtual immunity over prosecution ( Bruesewitz v. Wyeth) , scientists and company representatives met at a congress in Baltimore to  “Understand the Changes in the National Vaccine Plan to Maximize Government Sponsored Funding and Avoid FDA Scrutiny”.  The “workshop” which took place on 2 March 2011 was the first event in a Vaccine Business Congress  held under the auspices of the Institute for International Research USA . Amongst the many participants  at the congress were representatives of Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi Pasteur, Roche,  the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,  the Wellcome Trust, and the National Cancer Institute (NIH) (IIRUSA Welcome, IIRUSA Agenda).

By 2012, vaccines are expected to bring in more than $35 billion in revenue.
demonstrates the utter negligence of  the US Congress, administration and courts in leaving its citizenry subjected and exposed to an industry, forced to inject its products by mandate into their children, forced to pay for them through taxation and finally to do so without any sanction against manufacturers should damage occur. Is it any surprise then that instead of regarding the manufacture of safe and effective products as a solemn ethical duty, they just turn round and brazenly discuss how to milk the contemptible system to the uttermost?

Dan Olmsted is an investigative reporter and former senior editor for United Press International (UPI), a news agency of the Unification Church company News World Communications. Olmsted wrote a series about a discredited hypothesis linking vaccination to autism. He currently owns and edits the Age of Autism (AoA) website.

From January, 2005, through July, 2007, Olmsted wrote about his investigative findings concerning the apparent global epidemic of autism in a series of columns titled The Age of Autism. Though scientific research suggests that autism is a primarily genetic disorder and that reported increases are mainly due to changes in diagnostic practices, Olmsted claims that the increases are due to mercury poisoning, particularly from vaccines, and that the genetics is mostly secondary.

Many scientific studies have found no credible evidence that thimerosal vaccines and the MMR vaccine cause autism, and the MMR vaccine controversy has been determined to be the result of an "elaborate fraud" by British researcher Andrew Wakefield.

Murdoch's media malpractice and the genetic altering of human beings through DNA vaccines

Murdoch's media malpractice runs even deeper as his strong connections to the pharmaceutical industry also fueled his media machine's fabrication of lies against Dr. Andrew Wakefield, as well as hid from the public the true dangers of DNA vaccines that permanently corrupt human genes and cause autism.

You realize that Vampirism is caused by an engineered retrovirus that transfers the disease and its antisocial traits to victims, don't you? Is it any surprise that media giants like HBO and AMC broadcast weekly shows based on vampire characters?

It won't be long before most of the world is overrun by blood sucking vampires who were infected by vaccines containing engineered retrovirus DNA. There are things we can do. For example, garlic extract binds to the retrovirus DNA and inactivates it.

I hope this helps.

Silken, please tell me that you understand the ramifications of conflicts of interest? It really isn't a joke to people who have been on the receiving end of being interviewed by the media to just see a majority of what they said was carefully edited to leave the reader with the opposite meaning. Just as this board as done when it has disallowed victims of vaccines to have the right to defend themselves from character assassinations with their own proof. Surely you want to be able to form your own decision based on "all" the information and not just the information the press, your health agencies, and drug companies think you have the right to see?

More on Murdoch

[2011 July] An Elaborate Fraud, Part 1: In Which a Murdoch Reporter Deceives the Mother of a Severely Autistic Child  & part 2: In Which a Murdoch Newspaper’s Deceptive Tactics Infect the British Medical Journal

What Deer did not say in the BMJ article is that he had lied to the mother about his identity, claiming to be someone named “Brian Lawrence” (his middle name). Deer had written a number of critical articles about parents’ claims of vaccine injury. He even created a fake e-mail address for his fake identity, and he used it to communicate with her. When the interview took place in November 2003, more than seven years before the BMJ article, Deer was not working for the journal. He was on assignment for The Sunday Times of London. The Sunday Times is owned by Rupert Murdoch, part of the News International division that has come under a Watergate-size cloud in England for its newsgathering tactics – fraudulently obtaining confidential information, bribing police, hacking 9,000 phone numbers, gaining access to bank accounts, and using large financial settlements to keep some victims quiet.

BMJ admits that fraud claim against Dr. Andrew Wakefield has no basis in fact

The Sly Admission: Too Late; Damage Done

Private admission of wrong doing by the BMJ to newsletter Age of Autism, spoken evasively out of both sides of Dr. Fiona Godlee's mouth, is insufficient for the public damage done to Dr. Wakefield's integrity. But it has served to inspire a stronger alliance among medical professionals and aware parents of vaccine injured children on both sides of the Atlantic.(7)

Other Discoveries that Corroborate Wakefield's Findings

fourteen months before Dr. Wakefield's paper was published, two other researchers discovered the same problems of gut disorders and autistic behavior in seven children. Their 1996 presentation was called "Entero-colitis and Disintegrative Disorder Following MMR - A Review of the First Seven Cases." Those seven cases became part of the final twelve cases in Dr. Wakefield's 1998 Lancet paper. This and other facts disprove accusations that Wakefield fabricated the twelve reports.

A more recent Wake Forest University study determined that 70 of 82 autistic children they studied had measles virus in their guts. Interestingly, the measles virus strain they discovered was not a wild virus -- it was the same strain used in MMR vaccines.

What does this mean to a theory of Autism pathology ?

There are two prevailing theories -

* "one suggests exogenous (external) factor(s) stimulate neuro-inflammation during development

I suppose this could be pre-natal - post natal or quite reasonably suggestive both, a continuum as expressed before.

* autoimmune activation causes ASD pathology.

* "mutations described in ASD result in aberrant signaling regulation of immune cells during neurodevelopment. This could result in cell-autonomous (independent) activation and/or improper response to otherwise nominal stimuli, such as occurs in the autoinflammatory syndromes

http://www.niams.nih.gov/health_info/autoinflammatory/default.asp

What triggers NFkB ?

It seems quite a few things but in the case of autism it is noted above an association with anti-depressants , valproic acid.

Also of note is stress (Which I think most parents here will note)

http://www.springerlink.com/content/7y9u5kkvjxybyy49/

...and of particular note virus and bacterial infection. Including the following ...

Measles Virus

I think the above goes to the complexity of the task that awaits science in extricating the factors that are involved in what appears to be a very complex pathology of autism.

Some of the work done by Paul Patterson California Institute of Technology looks directly at maternal infection not only in autism but also schizophrenia. This type of investigation may also be important in other diseases ' disorders of the body and mind.

Could then a virus or viruses also play a significant part in autism pathology ?

Well we already know that both mumps and rubella virus have been implicated previously (Rutter).

If we once again look at ASD as a continuum do differing environmental factors play a part in negative effects or amelioration ?

It may be an uncomfortable or controversial question to ask - But does vaccination have a 'risk' particularly in 'regression' in autism ? Particularly if ASD is an immune system dysfunction of some type ie autoimmune disease / autoinflammatory syndrome.

This is also balanced with ...

Is vaccination beneficial to ASD children ? Does it not only protect them from virus / bacterial infection and/or ameliorate the effects of ASD ?

...and of course the third possibility - Does vaccination perform both a positive and negative role in ASD at differing times to differing children. (Of course it could have absolutely no effect at all)

Something to think about ...

Merck vaccine scientist Dr. Maurice Hilleman admitted presence of SV40, AIDS and cancer viruses in vaccines

One of the most prominent vaccine scientists in the history of the vaccine industry -- a Merck scientist -- made a recording where he openly admits that vaccines given to Americans were contaminated with leukemia and cancer viruses.

When asked why this didn't get out to the press, he replied "Obviously you don't go out, this is a scientific affair within the scientific community."

In other words, vaccine scientists cover for vaccine scientists. They keep all their dirty secrets within their own circle of silence and don't reveal the truth about the contamination of their vaccines.

Thorsen was a leading member of a Danish research group that wrote several key studies supporting CDC`s claims that the MMR vaccine and other mercury-laden vaccines were safe for children. Thorsen`s 2003 Danish study concluded that mercury could not be the culprit behind the increase in autism. In the study, Thorsen noted a 20-fold increase in autism in Denmark after that country banned mercury based preservatives in its vaccines.

After Thorsen`s study, CDC and mainstream media were quick to jump on the bandwagon of pointing to the study as proof that mercury-laced vaccines are safe for infants and young children, even at concentrations hundreds of times over the U.S. safety limits. Thorsen`s Danish studies from 2002 and 2003 are widely referred to by groups that dispute the vaccine connection to autism and nervous system disorders. A spokesman for the US Surgeon General`s Office called the reports` conclusions that no connection exists "irrefutable".

Thorsen`s widely referenced research articles have been published in major scientific journals. Questions about the validity of Thorsen`s studies and his scientific integrity may force CDC to rethink the vaccine protocols since most of the other key pro vaccine studies cited by CDC rely on Thorsen`s research group`s work.

Central Figure in CDC Vaccine Safety Studies Investigated for Fraud
Monday, April 12, 2010
One of the central figures in the Center for Disease Control`s (CDC) claims about vaccine safety is reported to be under investigation by Danish police after almost $2 million turned up missing that was supposed to have been spent on research. Dr. Poul Thorsen, one of the researchers involved in two highly publicized autism reports published in the influential New England Journal of Medicine, was accused of fraud last month by Aarhus University in Denmark.

According to reports, Thorsen`s fraud was uncovered as the result of an investigation by the university where he worked and CDC. The investigation found that Thorsen had falsified documents and, in violation of university rules, was accepting salaries from both the Danish university and Emory University. At Emory University, which is located in Atlanta near CDC headquarters, Thorsen led research efforts to defend the role of vaccines in causing autism and other neurological disorders.

The Year in Autism 2011

One of the most important findings in research undertaken in 2011 was the identification of the probable pathway that is associated with gene expression in Autism - NFkB.

Why is this important ?

Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), a master switch for many genes including some previously implicated in autism.

NFkB is involved in cellular responses to stimuli such as stress, cytokines, free radicals, ultraviolet irradiation, oxidized LDL, and bacterial or viral antigens.

NF-κB plays a key role in regulating the immune response to infection.

Incorrect regulation of NF-κB has been linked to cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, septic shock, viral infection, and improper immune development.

Three separate studies studied NFkB and Autism in 2011.

1. A Study of Nuclear Transcription Factor-Kappa B in Childhood Autism

Indian researchers reported the following in their study ...

* "Elevated amounts of NF-κB in children with autism can strengthen the conceptual frameworks of the role of innate immunity and ROS in the etiopathology of this condition.

* Children with autism could be in a “hyper arousal” state of NF-κB due to the constant effect of environmental stressors – even fear is known to upregulate NF-κB . Children with autism may have an altered threshold to fearful stimuli.

* identifying agents that increase NF-κB in children and regulating these triggers, would go a long way in preventing a certain sub sect of regressive autism.

2. Aberrant NF-KappaB Expression in Autism Spectrum Condition: A Mechanism for Neuroinflammation 2011

Researchers from University of St Andrew's and University of Cambridge reported on measurements of NF-κB in human post-mortem samples of orbitofrontal cortex tissue.

They found

*"NF-κB is aberrantly expressed in the orbitofrontal cortex as indicated by measurements on post-mortem tissue from ASC patients, and particularly in highly activated microglia.

* This region is a locus of abnormal function in ASC that underlies the abnormal development of social and cognitive skills"

3.Expression Profiling of Autism Candidate Genes during Human Brain Development Implicates Central Immune Signaling Pathways

Ziats and Renart from the National Institutes of Health

*Identified a subset of highly expressed ASD-candidate genes from which interactome networks were derived.

*Strikingly, immune signaling through NFκB, Tnf, and Jnk was central to ASD networks at multiple levels of our analysis

*Cell-type specific expression suggested glia—in addition to neurons—deserve consideration. This work provides integrated genomic evidence that ASD-implicated genes may converge on central cytokine signaling pathways.

* Most prominent transcriptome changes are related to neuro-immune disturbances. In the Garbett et al study, the most significant functional pathway implicated was NFκB

The highly expresses genes identified were -

Genetic expression and environment that's one quite plausible hypothesis. There are others.

I believe there are some unconscious reasons that some parents have such a desperate need to believe that vaccines caused their child's autism:

1) It relieves them of the possibility that they may have negligently exposed their child to some environmental cause. They are guilt free if the vaccine caused the disorder.

2) It relieves them of the possibility that the autism might be genetic in origin. This is important because: "My child is a reflection of me and my genes. If my child is abnormal/inferior, I am abnormal/inferior". Bad genes are associated with inferior social standing and familial heritage.

Ultimately the vaccine/autism pseudoscience allows the parent to think, "Neither my genes nor my actions can be held responsible for the socially repulsive disorder that has visited my child."

My theory is premised on the sad fact that these same parents see their child as defective. When parents and society recognize ASD children as just "differently-abled" they will become more interested in helping the child develop his/her special abilities rather than "curing" them of their differences. They will not join some crusade to prevent autism but will instead recognize the value of genetic diversity and the contribution it has made through the likes of Einstein, Da Vinci and Gates.

Is this what this is about? You are injured because you are not accepted for the person you are?
This isn't a reason to ignore the facts that are presenting themselves. You can't continue the lie just because you wish you were accepted.

LOL! Over the decades I have received more praise and "acceptance" by professional colleagues of mine than you can ever dream of. I'm one of the lucky ones. My differences and intellectual abilities have enabled me to greatly exceed what would be expected of mere neuro-typicals (NTs) like yourself.

I will tell you what this article and thread are NOT about. It is not about YOU, sweetie. You said:

"Ten years ago I was sickened. I didn't know the reason until just recently. I was poisoned by a toxic heavy metal called gadolinium. Ten years ago I felt I had something going on that was similar to autism and have followed the debate for years. Perhaps that something that binds us together is poisoning by a toxic heavy metal. I am totally disabled and have a plethora of health problems including mental impairment."

I will not say anything about your mental impairment but I will say that this blog is about autism, not your unfortunate personal experience.

Silken17, Everything you have just laid out here can clearly be reversed and applied to you. I think you need to focus on diagnosing yourself, evaluating your own motives, and stop trying to place words of psychological control and needless guilt on others. If your parents are not accepting you for who you are then I am deeply sorry to hear this. But not all parents are that way at all. I cannot speak for all others..but I will make this one thing clear to you..I have never ever thought of my son as anything but a precious child that I loved with my whole heart. Nor did I ever allow a label to define who is was. He has always had a name. He is far more then what those prior labels tried to make him out to be. These labels are doing one thing..they are dividing us all. I want you to think about one thing here..if they are allowed to throw out even one bogus study that deliberately changes the results to the outcome they sought ..do you not see they have the potential to do it to thousands? It's all in the numbers. Just as you believe millions of parents can be wrong because thousands of studies have proven what you wanted to hear..what if only one study was on your side? Is it still believable? Indeed, the "numbers" make the lie more believable.

You just don't get it. You talk as though I hold the minority opinion. Not only is your position in the minority, it is seen as ridiculous pseudoscience by the mainstream. The only way you can reconcile this fact with the certainty of your convictions is to conclude there is a conspiracy by government, pharmaceutical companies and academia to hide the truth. Your extensive posts here seem to me to reflect emotionalism more than reason. Are you able to, for one minute, consider that vaccines had nothing to do with autism?

My statement about some parents is based on two cases I have actually seen. I've seen parents who regard their sons' "disability" as shameful. Of course they love their children and do whatever they can to help them but beneath it all they see this "disease" as a social stigma that reflects on them....God forbid it might be caused by their genes.

Btw, my parents did an outstanding job raising me long before anyone heard of autism. I never doubted their love for me. That love above all else got me through a very stressful and confusing childhood. I felt different but never lonely or "not accepted".

"Silken17: This is exactly my point..It's abundantly clear you identify yourself with the herd.." I don't know why so many of you replies to me get held up. I'm responding to this one here.

Yes, I am glad to be a member of the "herd" here. This herd also believes: the earth is round, in evolution, in global warming, and that disease is not caused by evil spirits. Standing outside this herd is akin to believing that the earth is flat, evolution is wrong, global warming is a hoax, and disease is caused by evil spirits.

I hope you understand that the observations of "millions" of parents is anecdotal only. Those parents are untrained, have observed only one case of autism, and are unaware of how their observations relate to the others. Many parents cannot accept the fact that their first observations of symptoms are only coincidentally related to the timing of their children's first vaccinations. I would never give my personal experience with anything very much weight in a scientific study. I know too well how unreliable and unavoidably biased personal observations are. For example, I know that I am just as susceptible to the placebo effect as anyone else.

I have not said that the "case is closed" regarding autism's etiology. There is still a LOT to be learned about the genetics and the probable environmental co-factors that might be involved. All I am saying is that the alleged vaccine link is closed.
