Google+ To Reach 400 Million Users Within A Year, Statistician Predicts

Google Plus Users

Google+, the six-month-old site on which Google has pinned its social networking hopes and dreams, will have 400 million users within a year.

That's the bullish prediction made by Paul Allen, the founder of Ancestry.com and a self-described "unofficial statistician" for Google+.

Allen wrote in a post on Google+ that, according to his calculations, the social network has surpassed 62 million users and is adding 625,000 people each day, a number he expects will grow and help Google+ to reach 400 million users by this time next year.

Allen argues that the pace at which Google+ adds new members will speed up as more users join the service.

"I expect the growth to continue to accelerate however," Allen wrote. "Google can continue to integrate Google+ into its other products and word of mouth will continue to build. Most importantly, 700,000 Android devices are activated daily and this will become a very significant source of new users for Google+. That number will also grow next year."

Google has been mum about the size of Google+'s userbase since October, when Google CEO Larry Page announced that Google+ had surpassed 40 million members. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on Allen's estimates.

Though the overall population of Google+ users may be growing, the number of active members on the site offers a more accurate barometer of its success, as TechCrunch's Eric Eldon notes, and in this regard, little is known. By comparison, Facebook, the world's largest social networking site, claims to have over 800 million active users, while Twitter boasts more than 100 million active accounts. Reaching 400 million users will mean little to Google+'s sustained growth if only a fraction of those individuals return regularly to the site -- just ask Myspace.

Conflicting reports of Google+'s health have emerged. Google+ has been dubbed "worse than a ghost town" because of the lack of activity on the site, while Chitika, an analytics company, found that Google+ traffic had waned following a temporary peak in September when the social networking site was opened to all users.

As TechCrunch reports, comScore, a research firm, recently estimated that Google+ had reached 66.7 million unique monthly visitors -- ahead of Myspace, with 61 million, but far behind LinkedIn (94.8 million), Twitter (167.9 million), and Facebook, which had over ten times more visitors (around 793 million).

Google has made efforts to integrate Google+ into its existing offerings and put the social network front and center in people's inboxes, search results and on their phones. Google+ is accessible directly from Gmail and also appears at the top of all Google searches. Every blue link that shows up in Google search results has a "+1" button that allows users to publicly endorse a site on Google+.

While Google+ has been branded a Facebook rival, interviews with Google+ users, as we wrote here, suggest the site is serving a different need. Whereas Facebook is a social network that fosters connections between people who already know each other, users say Google+ provides an interest network where people can connect with strangers who share their interests. Maybe this will give Google+ an edge.

I think their initial strategy for Google+ was failed from the start. Aiming it as a direct competitor to Facebook was foolish, they need to find something that Google and it's vast resources provide that other social networks do not.

Just look at Twitter. Twitter launched after Facebook but became an almost instant success because it found an area is social networking that Facebook wasn't intended to address.

Google, by the same token can use Google+ effectively if it changes the goals of it social network. And there are signs it's beginning to do that, especially with marketing.

Failed or evolving Google products like Google+ and GoogleTV could become integral parts of Android phones. They could reduce the need to download third party apps that are oftentimes sluggish or just badly designed (i.e. Facebook).

This is an area where Google can pounce with Google+. I would love to just keep my Android device mostly pure and clean of third party apps. In fact that theme of keeping something free of clutter is exacting what made Facebook such a success.

Back in the day Myspace's popularity started to wane because people were able to personalize their pages too easily and they ended up personalizing them too much, making even loading some Myspace pages a chore for a lot of computers. Facebook offered a clean interface that couldn't be changed by users. Maybe ironically this lack of freedom appealed to most people.

Google has the opportunity to do something similar with Android

You hit the nail on the head! Brilliant observation. Google Wave was something different though and they just shut it down. I would like to see gmail become more social network like infusing + into it in some way. Email is just too boring. I advise all yahoo and hotmail users to have a gmail account as a backup and login for YouTube channels and for google to recognize their strength in linking to it. I recommend gmail receiving automatic copies of emails from yahoo and hotmail for emergency backup and retrieval when those accounts are acting up.

MySpace is still beating out Google+, according to newest reports:

MySpace is still in the top 100 sites worldwide, ahead of Tumblr & HuffPo. Surprisingly, Reddit is nowhere in sight:

I liked the idea that Google+ will be of better use for a different purpose. I joined Google+ and i didn't become an active user for a number of reasons: not many of the people I contact use G+, people who joined G+ say its not very convenient for use. I guess I'm not the one experiencing such problems.

It would be nice to make a comparative analysis between the growth of 'active users' in the first six months from Google Plus opening and the Facebook's ones years ago. In spite of the technical data analysis, Google will probably defeat his competitors when a completely 'cloud environment' will replace our normal use and idea of 'web', in this offering a totally integrated worflow for the next 'virtual real life' in between domotics, distace-job, everyday dues.

Funny. None of the people that I know of that joined...are using Google+. They (and me) joined to make sure we weren't missing anything. We weren't.

So Google+ can auto-member a billion members in their first year if they want. But when only a tiny portion participate in any somewhat active way, then it's still a failure.

I'd be much more optimistic for its future if there were exceptionally passionate usage numbers developing. So far, everybody's mum about that. And the few public numbers I've seen haven't reflected well for Google.

Getting people to join is the easy part when you are a market juggernaut. The hard part is keeping them there. Ask Yahoo. I know probably a hundred people who signed up with Yahoo Chat. Only one or two actually use it because it sucks.

Meh.Waste of time. I opened my FB account a few years ago and already I see how my use (as well as many of my connections) has dropped off over the years. I'm not really interested in having another. It's nice to share on once in awhile, but droll statuses, links to youtube videos I'll never watch and people spouting off in general grows tedious. I can't see myself opening another social media account anytime in the future and I think a significant amount of people also feel the same.

Still...even if it's going to be the best thing around, I'd prefer to meet people face to face. With technology, there will always be a security issue.
