Minimum Wage Raise Coming To Eight States After New Year

WASHINGTON -- Eight states will be raising their minimum wage next week, boosting the pay of more than a million workers across the country.

Most of the raises will be modest, on the order of 28 to 37 cents per hour, but the new rates will translate into hundreds of additional dollars annually for many people who are working yet remain in poverty.

Setting a new benchmark, Washington will become the first state to crack the $9 ceiling, raising its minimum wage from $8.67 to $9.04, which translates for full-time minimum-wage workers into an extra $15 or so in pretax pay each week. The other states raising their rates are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon and Vermont.

Workers in all of these states owe their raises to the cost-of-living adjustments written into their state laws. Such laws require that the minimum wage be tweaked every year to account for the rising cost of basic necessities, usually pegged to the consumer price index. Ten states, including the eight above, have such laws on the books. Nevada raises its rate during the summer, and although Missouri has a cost-of-living adjustment, this year it will not push the state rate above the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25.

In recent years, advocates for low-wage workers have tended to lobby hard for cost-of-living adjustments on the state level, arguing that such laws protect against the erosion of workers' purchasing power. The federal minimum wage is not automatically adjusted for inflation and requires new legislation each time it increases. Thirty-two states currently have minimum wages no higher than the federal rate.

Paul Sonn, legal co-director of the National Employment Law Project, called the cost-of-living adjustment "the most important sort of protection" keeping the minimum wage from losing its purchasing power over time.

"Workers in those states are enjoying substantially stronger wages than in others," said Sonn, who argues that such adjustments also offer the business community some predictability. "From our perspective, in the states that have adopted indexing, the minimum wage is preserving its real value."

But even in Washington state, with the highest rate in the country, today's minimum wage does not match its historical highs when adjusted for inflation, Sonn noted. Had the minimum wage kept pace with the rising cost of living since the 1970s, it would currently stand around $10 an hour.

Not satisfied with the rates set by their state governments, some cities have passed local ordinances establishing their own minimum wages. Among them is San Francisco, which next week will become the first major city with a minimum wage higher than $10.

Business owners and trade groups in San Francisco and elsewhere have argued that a relatively high minimum wage forces businesses -- restaurants in particular -- to cut back on staff and displaces jobs to other communities. Although the body of research is conflicting, recent some studies have concluded that raising the minimum wage has no significant impact on local job markets.

A new report by Brookings shows how corporations are forcing Americans to work to the bone for meager wages. Today – the typical two-parent family has to work 26% longer than back in 1975. And since 1975 – wages have failed to keep up with the longer working hours. In other words – fat cat CEOs are getting a lot more “bang for the buck” out of their workers today. Which is to be expected now that Americans have to compete for jobs with slave labor in the developing world thanks to so-called Free Trade. The race to the bottom in the labor force is killing the American middle-class – it’s time to ditch so-called Free Trade. Louise Hartmann, July 2011

Higher minimum wage is a plus for most businesses as the money earned will go right back into the economy. Very, very few people on minimum wage do not spend 100% of their paycheck every week whether it's rent, utilities, food, clothing & other basic necessities. More money to spend for those making minimum wage is a positive for the communities in which they live.

We also need to pass a jobs bill that will repair our failing infrastructure. With the amount of work that is needed across the U.S., we would keep people working for years. It's far cheaper to fix it now than to wait until it is falling down on us, possibly resulting in injuries or loss of life. These are common sense ideas that can be implemented within weeks of being passed. It's time to put a stop to the foot-dragging of Congress and put the American people back to work. We can remove those in the House & Senate who would rather impede the progress of our country in order to try to make President Obama look bad. Come November, we'll introduce them to the unemployment line. After all, they certainly weren't worried about the majority of this country being out of work, let them try it!

Those business owners who say that raising the minimum wage will hurt the economy and hurt "jobs" because owners can't afford to hire workers at a higher rate. I think they have used this EXCUSE long enough. It is almost as bad as saying the wealthy 1% should not have a tax increase because that would hurt the economy since they could not afford to invest in more business and more jobs. Putting more money in the pockets of the lowest paid workers will guarantee an increase in economic growth because these workers WILL necessarily be spending this money which they NEED so badly. More money being spent will mean more income for businesses and result in the need for more workers and more goods to sell. More tax money from the wealthy would result in more revenue for the Government, and more money which can be spent on our failing infrastructure and more jobs. Obama's Jobs Bill would be the best thing we could do to help the economy right now, but of course we always have the Republicans to nix anything good for the country. They blame Obama for not getting the wage increases, but it is the "voters" who elected a GOP Congress who have opposed all attempts by Obama to get any good legislation passed, who are really to blame for this so called "failure" by Obama.

Some states are raising the minimum wage. San Francisco is $10. If you side with GOP Congress, you'll be making 75 cents an hour.

I created a petition entitled TELL THE U.S. FEDERAL DEPT OF LABOR: Increase the New york Federal & state Minimum Wage to $9.00/Hr, because I care deeply about this very important issue.

I'm trying to collect 50,000 signatures, and I could really use your help.

To read more about what I'm trying to do and to sign my petition, click here:

http://www.change.org/petitions/the-us-federal-dept-of-labor-increase-the-new-york-federal-state-minimum-wage-to-900hr?share_id=lUeNJtONWZ&

It'll just take a minute!

Once you're done, please ask your friends to sign the petition as well. Grassroots movements succeed because people like you are willing to spread the word!

What happened to free market? (dead) Guess the government can manipulate the market how they please wont be surprise if people get less hours and/or get fired. Minimal wage kills the economy period (the higher the minimal wage is set the higher the prices of goods and services will go period) This will explain why San Francisco has the highest cost of living in the US.......... NO FREE MARKET NO REAL WEALTH FOR THE PEOPLE!

San Francisco is a classy city. Best restaurants, best weather, best living conditions, etc. If you want cheap living move to Appalachia.

San Fran is best in TAXATION too
07:46 AM on 01/06/2012
So you think it's OK if people are paid a wage that doesn't enable them to keep a roof over their head or food on the table, even when working two jobs? Did you ever have a job that had benefits, paid sick and vacation days or do you think that we should leave that up to employers since they have such a great history of protecting their employees and policing themselves?
08:12 AM on 01/06/2012
There are still jobs that pays higher than minimal wage and also still provide benefits. USA had a lot more jobs like that but we taxed and regulated them to other countries. So rising the minimal wage will do no good because businesses will just hire less or increase cost on services or products for the consumers.

I really really would love to see ALL our congress people have all their money frozen 100% & then have to live off minimum wage for one year (that means pay rent, try to buy a dependable car, have ZERO health insurance) & see how well they prosper. Cause if you don't have the money for rent, you're homeless, if you don't have a dependable car, you can't drive to school to get a better education(especially if you live in an area that does NOT offer public transportation) to say anything about getting to work safely & lord help you if you get sick....I'd like to see that experiment....

Let's do the math. Making $10.00 per hour gets you about $1600 per month. Take out about 20% in taxes (depending on where you live, not including any dependents). You have $1280 left to pay rent, etc. If half of that wage goes to paying rent you're left with $640 to pay all your utilities, buy food, pay for health insurance. Duh, the more you earn, the more you spend. With an economy driven by 75% consumer spending why don't more people get this. It's simple math!

Let's hope you don't have union dues. Maybe some day you can buy a used car.
07:50 AM on 01/06/2012
If he/she has union dues, chances are their health care is far less expensive than someone who doesn't have a group policy. Unions absolutely have their positives & negatives but without them, we might still have children working rather than getting an education, no overtime, hazardous work conditions, etc. Corporations have not done a good job of policing themselves or protecting their employees unless forced to do so.

If only, only they would guarantee 40 hours per week but that is too far fetched and most people don't realize that this is the norm now.

Next we start seeing more words to encourage/brainwash poor people.

Austerity plan = starvation plan
Minimum wage increase = scraps to the hungry and hard working
Human rights State healthcare = rip off to hard working americans
Socialism for workers = Evil

Left is right
Up is down.

"Free market capitalism" = will help Americans compete with slave labor wages.

Yeah right. I have a bridge in New York I want to sell you.

Politicians & the rich have been exporting jobs to slave labor countries for over 25 years blatantly and in your face about it.

They tell us you have to "GET MORE EDUCATION"!!!!! Cmon people we have master degrees now that can't find work.
Just keep getting into deep debt slavery to get that 2nd & 3rd masters to be 'competitive' in the world job market.

It has become like a sick black comedy. Unreal.

And if they could get away with paying those same wages here in the U.S., they'd be doing it. Let's stop pretending that corporations actually care about their employees or will police themselves as certain GOP candidates say they would if only left on their own without government regulations. Those regulations were put there to protect employees from a hazardous working environment, working long hours without overtime pay, etc. Yet we still see some who make minimum wage promoting candidates that will take them back to those days without regulations if given the chance to do so.

Rich throwing a scrap or two to the slaves. Consumer Price Index for food and other supplies will still rise and the workers will suffer even more with their 'minimum wage' raise.

Wake up people. You are being taken to the cleaners.
