The Case For Eating Horse

Posted: 12/28/11 10:59 AM ET

Time:

Congress recently lifted a 2007 ban on funding for the inspection of horse meat, albeit to little applause. It’s not like the country was crazy for the stuff in 2006 and started turning over cars when they found out they couldn’t get it anymore. In a country where Funyuns, bug tacos and cayenne-flavored purgatives are all considered perfectly acceptable, we have never gotten over our national revulsion against horse meat. Maybe we should.

Greetings,

for what it’s worth.

I am against horse slaughter for consumption or any other purpose i.e. fertilizer, plastic, fuel, etc.

I am against the use of primates in scientific studies. because arguments will always persist on proof of human relation from any given study. However, I am for Human use in place of Primates in these studies. I said it long ago. Death Row inmates. compensate the families and do the studies on these death row inmates. it could be the last good thing they ever do. just my opinion.

For horses, they should use the same policy they use in the USA for old diseased mad cows, i.e. SSS policy. shoot, shovel, and shut up. either bury them or incinerate them. again, just my opinion.

there is no humanity anymore $$$

It is hypocritical to criticize eating horse meat when you have no qualms eating cows, pigs, chickens, etc. Living, thinking (for all those morons who say plants have feelings too) things are living things. How people can separate them into categories of what is acceptable to take life away from and what is not is beyond me.

I lived in SE Wisconsin when horses were being stolen for slaughter in the late 1970s. They were processed and gone by the time the sun came up. They'd have the USDA stamp on the meat because the supervisor had access to everything in the plant, including the USDA stamp. Just a little money under the table.

Still want to eat someone's stolen pet processed under cruel and questionable practices?

If your going to slaughter horses for meat it needs to be done right though, using a captive bolt is not the way i will argue with anyone on using it, when you have to shoot a steel bolt through any animals head and it takes 5-6 times that is not humane with the draft horse it takes 8-11 times do you call that humane? NO i had a horse for 30 years i put her down and gave her a burial in the pasture, we have no say in the slaughter houses going to be opened thats the truth but do not use a captive bolt its barbaric, go to UTUBE search for horse slaughter you will see the undercover footage its heartbreaking

Hores has always been considered more nutricious than other meats by those who eat it. I have had horse and owned horses and considered neither offensive>

Hmm...

Back in the early '70s there was a "shortage" of beef and the price sky rocketed. So we chowed on some Ol' Paint.

Tasted great to me as I recall and no one had a problem with it. I don't see the problem in eating it, or any domestic or wild animal includng cat or dog. Meat's meat, man.

We raised rabbit and chickens back when I was a little shaver and ya know, there's ol Peter Cottontail for din dins. So why worry about one animal over another, unless it's nearing extinction.

Yes, meat is meat. Let's eat it all--there's rats in the cities as big as raccoons, why not have a little rat tartar? Raccoons are good but a little fatty; squirrels are good fried and stewed; muskrats are tasty as are beavers. You may not want to eat your dog or cat, but your neighbor might since they don't have the emotional attachments that you may have to them. Meat is meat and if we get hungry enough, you just might be on the menu because, after all, meat is meat.

Yes, horses are beautiful, intelligent, and (some say) noble creatures. They have been our "companion animals" for most of human history. But when they reach the end of their lives, they are just MEAT ... and quite a LOT of meat at that. Do we just bury that carcass in a grave, perhaps with a headstone? Or do we put the meat to better use? Let's be practical about this: Letting all that meat go to waste is just silly. The very least we can do is use it to feed to other carnivorous animals. And in many parts of the world horsemeat is a popular food among people; from what I've read, the meat of the oldest horses is actually the tenderest and most flavorful.

Frankly I just don't understand why someone with no qualms about tucking into a juicy beef steak would object to eating horsemeat. I'm not embarrassed to say that, as something of a foodie myself, I would love to try it.

they usually go into a meat can anyway
09:17 PM on 12/30/2011
That is true but they need to be put as you say (in that can anyway) it needs to be humanely its NOT a captive bolt is not the answer, 5-7 times in the head is not humane a heavy draft 8-11 times and yes they scream when this happens look at the videos

The Vietnamese eat dogs, some parts of China eat cats. Us Australian's eat kangaroos and emus. The Japanese tuck into dolphin. I can't see how eating horse is that much different, provided that they are all killed humanely.

I'm a vegetarian, but I've eaten horse while in France many years ago. It was tender and delicious. I've also eaten elk, dear and caribou. If you are going to eat meat, what difference does the species make? Are pretty animals exempt from being eaten?

Civilized people do not eat horses.

DELEWEYE:

I don't get it. We eat cows, chickens, fish, pigs, turkeys, and deer .... yet we're not supposed to eat horses because we're "civilized"? Whose judgment call is that? As long as these animals are slaughtered humanely, what difference does it make?

If you eat dog then you won't have a problem eating horse , or elephant . THey have a certain "emotional intelligence " that other large species don't ( or not that I have witnessed personally ) this is a choice for me based on long standing companion relationships I have had with horses. I do believe your prior comment held some broader viability when you remarked about the meat going to waste after their death , dogs as well in this country , cats too . WHat to do , I couldn't tell you .

Cultures which have historically emphasized riding horses tend to abhor the notion of eating them. I would think that someone whose heritage includes some of the most magnificent riders in history - the winged hussars - would instinctively understand that.

'Get over the taboo of eating horse' Why not get over the taboo of eating cats and dogs too? Why horses. Because there are too many of them? Spent race horses, abandoned horse 'pets', too many wild mustangs hanging out on BLM lands. As with cats and dogs I think over breeding is part of the problem. So lets just eat all the extras. I'd say limit excess production as in unregulated puppy farms that crank out numbers that can't be sold within the markets. There is little logical reason for opening up the production of horses for human consumption.

I eat it when I visit family, basashi, liver, intestines, tongue, it's all good. It's not that big of a deal, just another tasty animal.
