'All-American Muslim': TLC's New Show Takes On September 11 Attacks

Allamerican Muslim Tlc September 11

NEW YORK -- A television show about members of a Muslim community in Michigan is focusing what may be its second-to-last episode almost entirely on the conflicted feelings that its featured participants have about marking anniversaries of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The episode of TLC's "All-American Muslim" airs Sunday (10 p.m. EST). The series attracted attention earlier this month when a conservative Christian group called on advertisers to boycott the series, calling it "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

Two companies, the Lowe's home improvement chain and travel planning website Kayak.com, announced they were pulling ads. TLC hasn't said how many companies responded to the Florida Family Association's call to stop sponsoring the show. The controversy prompted a backlash of people protesting against Lowe's. Some new advertisers have signed on since then, TLC General Manager Amy Winter said Thursday.

Filming for the reality TV series took place during commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Both TLC and the show's characters, Muslims living in and around Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit at the heart of one of the largest Arab-American populations outside the Middle East, wanted to address the topic, Winter said.

"I'm very proud of it," she said. "What you'll see in there is a community with a range of emotions that they express over what was probably one of the most pivotal moments in our nation's history."

Mike Jaafar, a deputy sheriff who participated in a Sept. 11 memorial service at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, helped law enforcement prepare for any problems related to the anniversary. He choked up when recalling how police officers in New York City were killed as they tried to rescue people at the World Trade Center.

"You think about your guys who work for you, going into a building and not coming home," he said.

Nawal Auode was a high school sophomore on Sept. 11, 2001, when her mother called to say she was picking her up at school. Her mother found out about the attacks as she was passing out flyers to advertise a day care center and a man spit at her and ordered her off his porch.

"It was the first time I realized that people looked at me as less American," said Suehaila Amen. "As a person who was born and raised in this country, it was very difficult."

Auode said she dreads the anniversary of the attacks because of a sense that members of her community have to defend themselves for something they had nothing to do with.

That's at the root of the biggest conflict in Sunday's episode. One woman talks about how important it was to attend a Sept. 11 commemoration, but her adult-age children didn't want to go.

One man, Bilal Amen, traveled to New York City to visit the Sept. 11 memorial because, he said, "I want to see the place that changed my life."

Another woman, Nina Bazzy, spoke angrily about the Sept. 11 terrorists and said they weren't real Muslims because "a real Muslim would not do anything like that." She said Osama bin Laden made life difficult for many Muslims in the United States.

"He ruined it for us," Bazzy said. "He ruined it for our kids. He made us scared in our own homes."

"All-American Muslim" ends its eight-episode first season on Jan. 8. Its ratings are considered disappointing for TLC, and the attention caused by this month's controversy didn't improve them. Based on ratings alone, a second season would be considered unlikely. Working in its favor is TLC's pride in a series that spotlights communities that many viewers aren't familiar with.

TLC hasn't made a decision on the show's future and its executives will meet soon to consider it, Winter said.

There was a census quite recently, and apparently islam is still only the second biggest religion, at some 1.5Bn, trailing christianity by about 0.7Bn still.

As for "the religion of peace", it is the most violent, conservative and fundamentalist religion in the world.

P.S. I am an atheist, I don't really care which god does what in which book, but I most certainly *do* care what their followers are up to.

Its funny how a MIDDLE AGED WHITE MAN WITH BLUE EYES tried to blow up a mall in Denver and not one person has mentioned it ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/30/earl-albert-moore-colorad_n_1176874.html ). Yet all you racists propaganda pushing sheeple are in here condemning American born citizens for acts they didnt commit just because they are of Islamic faith.

Uneducated, narrow minded, hypocritical bigots like you are a disease. We dont need you or the viruses you give birth to. You make it so much harder for people of the world to progress humanity and commune in peace. The world would be a much more beautiful place if you all just jumped into the middle of the Southern Ocean.

I don't find it funny at all. Neither middle aged men nor people with blue eyes, are a religion. A religion is (usually) voluntary - it should thus not subject to the same protection under laws as skin color, ethnicities, sexuality, gender etc.

If there's one thing I've learned from some of the replies I've gotten with some who despise my defense of Muslims because I refuse to blindly hate them all for the acts of a few, is that dislike for the propagandizes villain whomever is the flavor of the month or year, is zealously protected. Not even I can hold grudges that long.

Out of smug vengeance I'll proudly say I love all races and all peaceful religious practitioners. Gettin' up in age, I don't have the stamina to hate anyone, even my detractors. If anything, they've been actually a big creative help. I take their wraths and work them into my story character desperados.

I guess you're talking about me. I don't hate all muslims. But, I don't like it when you try to say that inventions by Greeks or Romans, were invented by muslims.

The only hate here, is yours for Western culture.
06:50 PM on 01/03/2012
actully the phoenicians aka lebanese ppl did invent many things, the alphebet n alot of other things used today, that later on the greek and romans adopted. i just did a full report on it so dont even say im wrong bc im right.

Those people know who they are, The Bastige, and if you're one of them, well you are. Don't have to specifically name anyone. They know who they are. Yes, you do hate them all because you keep justifying it. There are some things that Muslims invented before the Greeks and/or improved upon them.

Western culture? Ha ha ha ha! Our 'Western' culture has taken things from many cultures and added to and we claim we own it. Oh gee. 'Western' culture means we shoot off firecrackers for celebrations. Chinese have been doing that for the last 2 thousand years. Oh gee isn't indoor plumbing wonderful to improve Western culture? Romans invented indoor plumbing and toilets. My, isn't the combustable engine a wonderful thing for Western culture? A Muslim engineer invented/improved upon what was already there. Gee isn't Gutenburg's printing press a wonderous thing for Western culture being able to print books? Long ago people learned to write on clay tablets before the Chinese and Egyptians made use of paper. I bet the Greeks and Romans were influenced by Muslims. Oh aren't our laws great? Right. We tweaked English law when we first arrived from England during the Pilgrim years. Oh how wonderful it is that the 'Western' culture embraces Thanksgiving! The Indians and Pilgrims celebrated the first harvest. Pilgrims tried to make it a let's thank God for food thing.

There is a difference between hating a group of people - and holding a voluntary organization responsible for their collective actions.

As an atheist, I give every religious person I meet the benefit of the doubt, and only very rarely do they disappoint me as being something more than brainwashed, deists, or 'traditional/inherited members' of any sect.

No there isn't, Rune, Borsjo. When you hate a group of people because a voluntary organization responsible for the actions of terrorists, and you think they're all terrorists because you won't distinguish between the two, it's hatred all the same. You're just attempting to rationalize the hatred. Do YOU want to be held accountable for people you don't know, who do things, who just happen to be your religion? No! So why should Muslims put up with it!

If you're an Athiest who gives every religious person you meet the benefit of the doubt, and you really practiced what you 'preach', Rune, You'd never say "There's a difference between hating a group of people - and holding a voluntary organization responsible for their collection actions." People are responsible for themselves, NOT what others do. You're also intolerant of the " "brainwashed" diests or traditional/inherited members of any sect" because you're deciding things based on your own biases. That's not giving every religious person you meet "the benefit of the doubt". You judge.

Do you Muslim bashers happen to personally know any Muslims? I do. My best friend is a Pakistani Muslim. Her family owns businesses and is close friends with my (Jewish) family. I've never heard them speak of wanting to kill Americans/destroy Western civilization/impose Sharia law/whatever. My friend is in law school and her brother is in medical school. Her mom is an excellent cook and her dad likes to paint. I go to a synagogue, and they go to a mosque. Are there too many religious extremists out there? Yes. Should they be stopped? Yes. Is every Muslim an extremist? Um, no.

My point was that several people BELOW made comments asking WHY no Muslims were commenting on this page. I had attempted several replies but non made it except my note to the moderator that you responded to.

""He ruined it for us," Bazzy said. "He ruined it for our kids. He made us scared in our own homes."

Osama didn't ruin it. The collective response from muslims in the USA and around the world ruined it; Celebrations, denials, muted condemnations, assertions that muslims were "the true victims of 9-11", overused charges of "islamaphobia".

I've read many, not all comments. Just curious: are any Muslims reading huffpo? Cause if someone were talking about me, I'd kinda like to respond. Not one, from what I saw. Interesting.

This show disgusts me. I am all for equality and I am not racist in anyway shape or form. But, this is America and you are Muslim. Do not try to combine the two. That is both disrespectful to America and to the Muslim religion. They are part of a group who attacked our great nation and they expect us to welcome them with open arms? I don't think so. I hope this show gets taken off the air. Yes, they may not have been the people who attacked America, but they are not American and they should not try to act as such. This show doesn't discuss the Muslim religion or have any depth to it. They discuss their lives. It's just another reality show.

Get a clue. At least learn to distinquish between a terr.orist and a religion. The cluel.essness of you xenophobes is staggering.

First off, it was (is) an utterly boring show. Secondly, the show was created with an agenda... that didn't work. Trying to convince rational people that this group of hand-picked characters represents the "real" muslims... C'mon, can anyone say trying too hard?

Unfortunately for these people, Islam is filled with muslims who want to burn, destroy, kill and maim in the name of their religion. Every country in the world with a muslim population faces potential issues and prepares for Islamic attacks.

Islam has a problem. The problem is widespread. The problem is systemic. Ignoring the problem doesn't erase the problem.
11:12 AM on 12/31/2011
I believe just about everyone is missing the real problem here. What religion someone practices is unimportant. There are extremists in every religion. You don't have to believe in the religion, but you should accept that someone else does. You should also judge people on their actions, not what religion they practice. I have friends from many different religious backgrounds and I could care less about what religion they practice. It is wrong to dislike someone you don't know based on religion. Do you dislike Wiccans, Catholics, Baptists, Jews, and all other religions? Where do we draw the line? As for Muslims fighting non-believers, has anyone actually looked at world history? The Crusades were all about forcing people to practice the same religion everywhere. Were they right? People need to think about all the wars fought in the name of Christianity before they start talking about any other religion. I am not a religious person and I don't care what someone else practices. Until people learn to look past differences, this world is going to keep getting worse. LOOK AT THEIR ACTIONS, NOT THEIR RELIGION.
