Democrats And Republicans Are Optimistic About Their Chances In 2012 Presidential Election: Poll

Ap Poll 2012 Elections

By JENNIFER AGIESTA   12/29/11 02:04 AM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- Americans are hopeful for what 2012 will bring for their families and the country, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll, though most say 2011 was a year they would rather forget.

Nearly seven in 10 say the year gone by was a bad one, more than double those who consider it a success, according to the poll. But 62 percent are optimistic about what 2012 will bring for the nation, and more, 78 percent, are hopeful about the year their family will have in 2012.

Jeff Wolfe, 33, of Farmington, W.Va., said 2011 treated him well because he was able to find steady work as a lineman. But for the rest of the nation, things were "pretty rough," with so many Americans looking for jobs, he noted.

"For the first time since 2009, I worked all year," he said. Wolfe said he lost work in 2008 and again in 2010. But in 2011, the father of two school-age children said he was able to catch up on bills, buy his wife a new car and renovate his home.

Overall, the poll found 68 percent of Americans described 2011 as a bad year, compared with 29 percent who felt it was a good one.

A partisan divide, much like the one that ruled Washington this year, seems the only split in public opinion on 2011. Democrats were most likely to view 2011 positively (40 percent called it good), while independents and Republicans were less effusive. Beyond that, the poll found general agreement that 2011 is best left in the past.

Mary Burke, 57, of Ridgeland, S.C., felt economic pain in 2011. She saw prices rise for all of her expenses, from her light bill to groceries. "Paying $5 for a jar of mayonnaise is outrageous," she said.

Food and gas prices surged in 2011, but the most recent Consumer Price Index shows inflation leveling off. November statistics from the government showed a year-over-year inflation rate of 3.4 percent, the smallest such rise since April.

The AP-GfK poll found consumers are sensing the change. Just 18 percent of adults expect consumer prices to rise at a faster pace in the coming year, the lowest share to say so since the poll first asked the question in March. Most (51 percent) expect prices to rise at the same rate or more slowly.

And as the nation's economic fortunes overall appear to be tilting slightly positive, the public's expectations for the economy in the coming year are at their highest point since spring. According to the poll, 37 percent expect economic improvement in the next 12 months, compared with 24 percent who think the economy will slide downhill. That's the first time since May that significantly more people said things will get better than get worse.

On a personal level, 36 percent think their household's financial situation will improve over the next 12 months, while 11 percent think it will worsen. Americans' financial ebbs and flows affect their personal outlook for 2012. Those whose households have faced a job loss in the past six months or who describe their current financial situation as poor are less optimistic about what 2012 holds for them and their families than others, though that does not carry over to their forecast for the nation in 2012.

Optimism about the nation's path varies with views of the economy's direction. Those who say things have looked better in the past month are generally optimistic (79 percent), while just half of those who say things are getting worse feel positive about what 2012 holds for the country. And about 6 in 10 of those who distrust the two major political parties to handle the economy or job creation are pessimistic about how 2012 will turn out for the nation.

Burke said she is angered by politicians in Washington who she believes fail to look out for the interests of the American people.

"They don't care about me and you," she said. "They only care how they are going to line their pockets." As for the economy and nation improving in 2012, she said, "I pray and hope."

The partisan divide in impressions of 2011 persists in the outlook for 2012, with Democrats more optimistic than either Republicans or independents. But expectations for next year's presidential contest appear not to be a factor. Most partisans on both sides foresee victory for their side in the November 2012 presidential election: Three-quarters of Democrats say they think President Barack Obama will win re-election; three-quarters of Republicans say he will not.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Obama will be relieved of his duties in Nov. 2012. The economy will kick back in instantly upon hearing of his extraction. Hang in, less than a year until the Obama experiment is finally shut down.

The economy is already kicking back, despite conservative efforts to throw the country under the bus just to defeat Obama!

We are still living the nightmare, of the conservative experiment!

Altho more Americans are blaming Obama and democrats for the economy, the fact is most Americans still blame GW Bush and republicans for the economy.

When asked specifically whom they blame for the economy, 52% of Americans blame Bush and republicans, and 32% blame Obama and democrats( I have included the poll data in the final link below).

It will probably be a close election for president in 2012. The economy is still anemic, but trendlines appear to moving in the right direction.

In addition, I do think Americans are frankly sick of the tea party's intransigence and extremism, which is why the organ of government so identified with it, the GOP House of Representatives, is viewed so negatively by most Americans.

Romney will take it with a "at least I'm not Obama" campaign and Obama will pay the price that bait&switch politicians all end up paying, In the end the status quo will remain protected,, right to the bitter end.

Romney is the ultimate bait and switcher and the voters know or will know in November. That's why he can't get out of the 20% range in 6 years, and why the teapublican party is still looking for a someone to save them!!!

Romney will have very weak support from the GOP base. The 10% or so (maybe more) who just won't be able to bring themselves to vote for him will stay home, hopefully decimating the GOP positions in House and Senate as well. Enjoy.

Oh, so you would prefer to dismantle much of the federal government, raise taxes on the poor and middle class while further reducing them on the rich, cut infrastructure spending and services to ordinary Americans, make health care a privilege of the very rich, dismantle social security, and get rid of all civil rights. Yes? All that must be better than having a man in office who is actually a centrist, I guess.

All of your comment was based on assumptions perpetuated by your blind hate against anyone who doesn't agree with you.

The optimism probably stems from knowing the House is going to turn blue again, the Democrats will get their 60-seat majority in the Senate, and yne POTUS will get four more years to try to repair the damage the right wing has inflicted on America.

8 years probably isn't enough to fix everything...

Oh come on. A LOT of people are benefitted by those very middling and conservative and much needed healthcare reforms-- when everyone knows what we really needed was a much more radical overhaul of the entire system. And anyone who thinks that that was all that happened has been too busy watching right wing media and too lazy to actually read about or look up all the other things going on. You're talking utter nonsense on many levels.

They never expected him to be able to do so, and were busy critiquing him and owing to make him fail before he was ever even sworn in. And at the same time as they were still denying that Bush's policies had any negative effects. Now they actually claim that Obama caused the problems-- they are counting on low memory low information high fear and hate voters.

"There's many a slip, twixt the tongue and the lip".

A lot can happen in 11 months, including millions if not billions of dollars in advertising that will be paid for by those who don't even have to account for it.

Instead of worrying so much about where President Obama was born, maybe we should be worrying more about who is trying to buy our election process, and where are THEY located?

Multinational corporations owe allegiance to NO COUNTRY. Something we may find out to our detriment in 2012.

The Dutch have the good sense to limit their campaigns to a set time period of several months, and a fixed budget, with a 4 month grace period before the elections of NO Advertising (or so I am told).

They do not allow corporate involvement. http://vorige.nrc.nl/international/article2518799.ece

This country could learn a lot, from many sources around the world. If it wasn't for our arrogance and blind faith in American "exceptionalism'

Does it bring tears to your eyes to hear a friend tell you how much it hurts to fill up the gas trank on his new Lexus or BMW with the high price of gasoline today ......that the rent on the boat dock for his yacht has doubled in he last year that his 3 million dollar home is only worth one and a half million dollars today...that his stock portfolio has lost a few hundred thousand dollars this last year....and that the family vacation in Barcelona this year may have to be just three weeks instead of four and if things cointinue to get worse they might eventually have to fly coach.
Well thats how it is for many americans these days and our hearts should go out ot them and the sacrifices they have been forced to make in these hard times.

What a load of kwrap. Thats not how its done. First they start donating to politicians, once they have a little control, they start filling key regulatory positions with industry insiders, as the control cements the influence on legislation picks up. Soon things like tax rates start inching down, and thats when the propaganda kicks in, and people like you start defending the pillaging of America. Your obvious bias is the key to your conditioning. Having an individual of color in the White House has been nothing but red meat for the right, much like the abortion issue. Come November, grab your Pabst and have a seat on the porch of your double wide cuz your about to have another bad 4 years.

Obama would not feel so confident about the 2012 election if the Republicans could field a decent opponent.

Its like the Jets (a mediocre team) having to play the Bucs (a dreadful team) in the Superbowl; if the Jets had to play the Packers or Saints, they would be worried. But the Bucs are such a mess, the Jets don't see how they can lose this one. Obama is Mark Sanchez.
