Ken Regan, Ken Regan photographer, All Access, rock and roll photographer, photographer of the Rolling Stones tour, photographer of Bob Dylan tour

Legendary photography Ken Regan documented some of the greatest moments in rock and roll history, touring back to back in the 1970s with Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, and covering The Band's Last Waltz. Those years are covered exhaustively in his new coffee table book, "All Access: The Rock and Roll Photography of Ken Regan."

Regan's diverse career included work in the worlds of sports, politics, fashion and celebrity, shooting subjects as diverse as Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Hank Aaron, the Kennedy family, Madonna and Oprah Winfrey. Over the past decade, he's worked on stills for film and special projects, with directors such as Jonathan Demme, Clint Eastwood and Alan Pakula.

In this AOL "You've Got" interview, Regan shares a key lesson he learned when touring with the Stones.

great photos....his access with Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones especially was amazing and the shots he got are powerful documents of music legends

Joni Mitchell is not a reliable source when it comes to Dylan. They had a nasty split up in the 70's in which he played her. Dylan was never a favorite of mine but I do like some of his music.

The Stones rank up there in the top three as the greatest rockers for their music and longevity. I was lucky enough to see many great bands in the 60's, 70's and 80's and one of my favorites was George Thorogood. He opened for REO and I was amazed how fantastic a performance he put on. Other low key great concerts were the Greg Allman Band, Lynard Skynard, Journey and Blue Oyster Cult.

As far as Huffington Post goes, they aren't going anywhere. They are a shill for the Democratic Party of which Ariana Huffington is a generous contributor. Why else do you think all their political news is slanted? The liberals are drawn to this site like a magnet and the DNC keeps a close watch on the trend of the comments.

There's nothing that could surprise anyone about the Stones in the '70s. They did and saw it all.
11:03 AM on 12/30/2011
Did and saw it all with EVERYONE and with EVERY substance known to mankind, bar none.

Here's a surprise...The twelve cuts issued with the re-release of Some Girls is one of the best country albums of the year.

Just bought the reissue this past week...I've listened to a few of the cuts and I've got to agree!

It's amazing how adept the Stones are in so many different genres.

I've seen a lot of great concerts in my life: Traffic, Grateful Dead, Johnny Lang, U2..but hands down, the Rolling Stones were by far the greatest. They were the only ones I was "in awe" over. I could not believe I was so close to them.
They are the greatest rock band ever. Such energy. Such rock and roll.
To hear Lisa Fischer belt out Gimme Shelter - and to see Mick give her the stage and bow down to her - was probably the greatest concert moment I have every seen. Brought tears to my eyes.
09:29 AM on 12/30/2011
Really? I have always thought their music sounded so "thin" live, and I have seen them too. They are a band that benefited greatly from the slow process of recording and production.

Seen most of theses bands also. Stones and the Who were the best. But The Grateful Dead New Years eve 1978 concert at Winterland is one of my fondest memories.

Js, I too was one of the lucky few who got tix for the Closing of Winterland. The lottery was insane where I lived in Santa Cruz. Couldn't score. My family and friends in Santa Rosa picked up almost 50 lottery tixs. My brother's number was called to buy the next to the last pair of rare ducats.

What a show! The Grateful Dead (for 3 sets over 6 hours), The Blues Brothers, NRPS , and a real "breakfast served at dawn" for 5,000. Uncle Bill flew down to the stage at midnight dressed as Father Time in a rocket ship sized joint.

A Bill Graham employee invited my brother and I to be her guest for the after party at the Airplane Mansion, but we lost her before the show was over and went home to watch Joe Montana and Notre Dame win the Cotton Bowl. (That is the beginning of another San Francisco story). I'll have a little nostalgia rush and watch the DVD (33 years later!) before going out this NYE.

I call BS on this "acid" in the punch story. The Stones did blow and Keith injected himself with junk but they weren't into Tripping before a show.
I don't know maybe someone dosed him, but this wasn't standard fair for the Stones.

Agreed. The Stones were known for many things, LSD wasn't one of them, although Keith and Mick both did it, by the time '72 rolled around, it was other things they got off on.

It isn't such a stretch to imagine Ken Regan getting dosed backstage at Winterland, the home turf of the Grateful Dead in June of '72. Even Bill Graham once got dosed by someone tampering his 7Up can. I only had a couple beers on the sidewalk waiting for the doors to open.
It was an overcast San Francisco Tuesday Afternoon matinée with The Rolling Stones at Winterland. Tix were a mere $5 and Stevie Wonder was the opening act. Uncle Bill played the TAMI Concert Film, minus the Stones portion, before the show began. Robert Shields did his street mime shtick while roadies moved equipment between acts. Simpler Times...

I want that book SO bad (Santa wasn't trying to hear it this Christmas......NEXT!)

Hey Ken, it isn't about being backstage at a RS concert. I wouldn't drink something I didn't open even if I were (never gonna happen) at a Justin Bieber concert (repeat: NEVER gonna happen.).

One of the wildest things I learned about the Stones is that when I lived in Philly in the 70's a vibrant music time, they were hanging out for a year or so in Cherry Hill NJ, in a quiet suburban neighborhood of a girl friend. It now explains lots of sightings in those days. That's kind of cool.
09:33 PM on 12/29/2011
I lived in Cherry Hill back then and heard a story that I laughed off for years....A friend of a friend used to deliver pizzas in the Cherry Hill area. One time he delivered a pizza to a large house ( I later learned it was on Munn Lane). He rang the bell and when the door opened, there stood Keith Richards. He said Richards never said a word...he just took the pizza (i guess he paid) and silently shooshed the kid. I later read that Keith was doing a little rehab in Philly and had rented the house on Munn lane. Pretty cool huh?

I didn't buy it yet, but evidently Keith covers it in his book. I could be wrong but it seems there was some sort of legal hold on them or him leaving the state of New Jersey, so the rehab thing may fit that. There was also this lady friend of the band.

He lives in Connecticut these days. You could probably run into him at the local coffee shop.

I googled Munn Lane, yea, there's one house that resembles the present home Keith lives in, and it looks like it's owned by a travel agency. Biggest house on the street. Like a country estate. Plenty of room to run wild and party or do what ever, no one to bother you.

horrible article

didn't even give one example of ANYTHING that happened on any of the tours

it just says watch a video (which makes you watch a commercial) in which he just tells ONE tiny detail.

and the video itself is little more than a commercial for his book.

reminds me why i will almost never read any articles on this site, the reporting is beyond bad,

i mean, the reporters know what the audience wants (hence the "grabber" headlines)

but they won't provide that

the actual articles are essentially content free, and do little but urge on to go to some other website, or to watch an embedded video thats hosted on another site.

basically, the "reporting" on here  is usually little more than a story that exists for no other reason than to drive clicks to another website, which as often as not, is little more than an advertisement

(in this case, an advertisement for this guys book)

granted, i see now (and have known for some time) that the business model for almost all of the entertainment stories on here, is just a pay-for-click business model, where the "journalists" on here (more like ad copywriters) try to pretend they are writing articles, but its just driving web traffic for profit to other sites, or ad copy pretending to be news.

either way, this story is not a "story" and is free of any interesting facts,

i must remember to read my non-political news elsewhere.
