Rick Santorum Surges Ahead Of Iowa Caucus 2012

MASON CITY, Iowa--Rick Santorum may be getting his shot at the spotlight -- in the nick of time.

Struggling for months to gain traction in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the former Pennsylvania senator has moved into third place in Iowa, according to a new poll commissioned by CNN and Time magazine.

It couldn't come at a better moment for Santorum. The social conservative, who has languished in most opinion polls, could use the momentum from a surge to sustain his campaign after January 3, when Iowans choose their nominee.

That would be the latest twist in a nominating contest that has been punctuated by a rotation of "in" candidates seen as an alternative to Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, around whom social conservatives have failed to coalesce.

Pizza executive Herman Cain, Texas Governor Rick Perry, and Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann have each had rises and falls, respectively.

But Santorum has stayed consistently low in the polls, until now.

"We've always felt we could trust the people of Iowa, that when they got down to the time they were going to look at all the candidates and measure up to people they've had the opportunity to see, that they would do well," Santorum said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

Romney came in first place in the poll, ahead of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who came in second.

Santorum earned the support of 16 percent of Iowa voters surveyed by the news organizations, compared to 25 percent for Romney.

Santorum has virtually moved to Iowa, concentrating his hopes on the state's social conservatives who share his strict opposition to abortion and gay marriage.

He has visited all 99 of Iowa's counties and courted every leading religious group in the state, campaigning regularly in the diners, town halls and community centers that are so crucial to the type of personal contact that Iowa voters demand.

Success in Iowa may not mean he has a pathway to the Republican nomination, however, even if he becomes the latest Romney alternative.

"Santorum is benefiting from all of his quality time in the state," said Republican strategist Ron Bonjean. "However, any placement will be hard to sustain in other states where he lacks presence, organization and resources."

Santorum has polled consistently around 3 percent nationally and between 5 percent and 10 percent in Iowa. (additional reporting by Sam Youngman and Samuel P. Jacobs)

One requirements to be a Ron Paul supporter is to get your leg bitten by a rabid dog. Only then you will foam at the mouth at the mention of the word FED. All you have to say to these guys is F E D and they go about the room banging heads and foaming..the end is near, the end is near...

Based on what exactly? Give an example because I could surely say the same thing about the current Administration. Bigotry, intolerance and ignorance. However I would add liar to that list.

Based on Santorum's "surge' in Iowa. His entire message is one of bigotry, intolerance, and ignorance about gay people, Hispanics and Muslims.

Your "I'm rubber you're glue" childish nonsense doesn't work. Sorry.

It's news when a candidate moves from only 15% of the vote to 16 or 17%? That's only occuring because they kicked Michele Bachman to the curb and told their people to get in line behind Santorum.

Santorum's view of the presidency is un-American. WE do not need a president who does not understand the separation of church and state, and the inherent right of privacy to believe or not believe as one chooses. While I would agree that governmenr should be guided by compassion as spoken by Jesus in the Bible, there is no place for Christian evangelism in government. The Puritans tried that in Massachusetts, and our founders knew only too well the dangers of those who desire to control thought of all individuals. It is the reason there is this Constitutional separation requirement.

I think Iowa and NH are both playing with these candidates. They want to keep them all relevant so they continue to pay for air time on their networks so they change their top candidate every week or so just to keep everyone spending. I have a feeling they made up their minds months ago who they really want. This system is silly and a waste of money. Every state should hold their primary vote on the same day, sometime in early 2012 and not let two little states decide who wins and can move on which is ridiculous.

Michele Bachmann is a Fine Lady and a Serious Politician who Fights for the Sanctity human life and the defense of our country just like Rick Santorum does. That said, it seems that Rick Santorum is starting to surge now for some reason. Possibly beause Iowans are good people, but as a woman it is hard to win Iowa as no woman has ever done it before. That said, I believe a Santorum Bachmann team would be Dynamite!

The "any one but Mitt" rabbit just keeps on going, and St. Santorum is now the flavor of the week. When Santorum's 15 minute segment, of his over all 15 minutes, is over, will the Iowa Pub/Cons set up recruiting stations at the malls and post offices in order to snag a "true not-Mitt conservative" who can get and keep a lead for longer than 15 minutes? I know that sounds very silly, but silly problems created by silly enterprises, i.e. the Republican "debates and the Republican caucus in Iowa, of all places, demand silly solutions. And please tell me again why Iowa has this responsibility - I still have trouble seeing one iota of common sense or reason as to why a low population, agricultural, conservative, religious-right dominated state gets to have so much sway by being first. Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Gingrich, and now Santorum. The Iowa Pubs change their favorite candidates like normal people change their socks and underwear. I see that Obama, who would have never had a chance without this traveling circus known as the Republican debates, is up in the polls, and no wonder why. It's like watching the seven dwarfs throw Prince Charming into the dungeon and then fight over who gets to take Snow White to the Ball. Can or will the Pub powers that be stop this madness before it is too late? Unbelievable.

Iowa's GOP caucus has always been and shall always be a political anomaly. The people who participate are disproportionately extreme right wing hyper-religious conservatives, and therefore are not a useful indicator of the general Republican voting population.
Sanctimonious chest-thumpers often perform well in Iowa's caucus, only to flame out when other states have their more-democratically run primary elections.

Iowa caucuses are not democratic. Those who attend are paid to attend by the candidates.

It would take a miracle to defeat Obama given his record. President Obama is untouchable. He reversed the GOP financial collapse and made history very quickly. The GOP candidates are all clowns, but even if the best republican ran, they would lose. This is over. You baggers did this to yourselves.
