Cable Television Bills Have Nearly Tripled In The Past 10 Years

Cable Bill

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/30/11 11:28 AM ET Updated: 12/30/11 05:20 PM ET

Do you feel like your cable bill is significantly higher than it used to be? That's probably because it is.

The average cable TV subscriber pays nearly three times as much for cable now as they did in 2001, according to research by SNL Kagan cited by the Wall Street Journal. The jump in average prices -- to about $128 per month from $48 -- may not be good for cable providers; executives have said publicly that they're worried that a boost in bills will push customers away.

But while the cost of cable service has risen, the costs of the televisions themselves continues to trend downward. Indeed, an early television cost nearly $10,000 once adjusted to modern-day prices.

That price decline unfortunately hasn't been enough to offset the costs of even the most basic of necessities for many struggling Americans: Nearly half of all households today are economically insecure, according to a recent report by Wider Opportunities for Women. And higher television bills aren't helping.

An increase in the costs for original cable programming as well as a boost in sports fees may be in large part responsible for the hike in bills, according to the Los Angeles Times. As cable companies see their costs rise, they pass them on to consumers. Still, the squeeze doesn't seem to be hurting the cable providers too much -- for many media companies, cable channels are their most profitable sector.

The battle over who is to blame for high cable costs has grown increasingly heated in recent months. The NFL and ESPN inked a controversial deal earlier this year, prompting many media executives to blame the league and the network for rising cable costs, according to a separate report in the WSJ. Liberty Media Corp. CEO Greg Maffai called the boost in the cost of ESPN a "tax on every American household."

But it's not only increasing sports programming fees that have cable providers worried. Some cable executives have expressed concern that with the availability of television on the internet, viewers will stop signing up for cable, according to The New York Times. Some cable providers, such as Time Warner Cable, are considering charging data usage fees in an effort to make money off of the rising use of services like Hulu and Netflix, Bloomberg reports.

Still, cable executives' fears that rising internet viewership would turn customers away from cable doesn't seem to have materialized. Most Americans that decide to cancel their cable bills do so because of poverty, not because they're choosing to watch on the internet, the NYT reports.

Which cities are seeing wages jump most, helping residents to pay the bills?

I am tired of paying Comcast $10.00 a month to rent their DVR........ what a scam.....

You should be able to buy the box and eliminate the monthly charge......

Comcast needs to lower their monthly bills or people will move to internet TV and cut the cable.

In defense of the cable companies, when they first came out they had regulations and offered only two out of service area channels or super channels WPIX-WOR New York and WGN Chicago. Rates were around 1.50 monthly. Now we have 1000 channels of nothing.
Most companies were very small, then came Continental, Time Warner, American etc. and the polls in Washington saw $$$$$. Deregulation came and prices skyrocketed. Smaller companies were snorted up. Not to mention we now have to pay for ESPN programming, CNN the Mess at NBC the Chinese channel, all the Spanish channels, yes folks you are paying for it!
The one good thing was Community TV, whether you watched or not, if your provider had a good director of programming it offered alot of local programs and training in a local studio. Now that's gone. That's the shame.

Ok...I cancelled my cable because I wanted to save money, not because I am in poverty. Also, I NEVER watch sports, so it's garbage that I would have to absorb the costs of sports packages and all that crap! I cancelled my cable because the quality of shows has dropped off significantly. Nothing but reruns and annoying commercials! Commercial breaks that take forever! I was sick of seeing the same thing every single day on television. I only watched about 5 channels out of the 120 I got on the "preferred starter" or whatever. 128 bucks a month WITH internet. Nope. I will stick with Hulu and using my fiance's Netflix account. I have taken up playing video games and I can improve on my clay sculpting. Cable is just trash.

The time allotted to commercials has certainly increased considerably over the years. Children's programming is more than 1/4 commercials, including brand promotional time by such as Disney and Nickelodeon. The actual shows are episodes 11 minutes and 22 minutes long for half hour shows. I was watching a movie on ABC a few years ago and there were so many commercials in a row that I honestly thought the movie had ended oddly. So now we are paying more to see more commercials. Also there are more infomercials than ever before 24/7, no longer just on early Sunday morning. How could costs be increasing for the cable companies?

Whatever happened to "Channel Select" Service ?

All I want is local Channels, Fox Channels and Speedvision.

Why do I have to pay $ 128.00 when I only want seven Channels ?

I have COMCAST for my TV, Computer, and Telephone Service and pay $180.00 plus each month. Yes, the rates do appear to be getting much, much higher each year and COMCAST appears to have some added charges that they can't explain very well. They seem to keep those charges under
eight-dollars each month; however, they do add up to $96.00 plus each year and I feel is simply a rip-off to the consumer. I believe prices could be reduced if the Government (FCC) would allow all cable companies to provide services to anywhere -- this certainly would increase competition among cable companies and may reduce costs to consumers.

Cable companies need to quit giving channels people don't want.

They can take faux off my cable and not charge me for it.

Thats because your a liberal jerk. For one it costs the cable companies more to take channels off than it does to offer them. Two Most people don't like Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnel, the people at CNN or NBC, CBS ABC that's why FOX NEWS NETWORK is NUMBER ONE.
Fox is number one because more people watch it.
Deal with it baby. Romney is the next President. Fox is number one. and your still a jerk!

One has got to go! Leave the remote on your way out.

People need to call up, email or snail mail their providers and complain about the high prices.

This is ridiculous. These cable bills are too high.

Cable companies are going to kill the goose when people switch to just internet TV.

Write your Congressman, State Representative, or Cong Ed Markey, MA. but most importantly contact your Mayor and cable advisory committee.

Better yet. Become a member of your Cable Advisory Committee, study your franchise agreement and do something about it. Reach your community through the local access station. (they MUST provide one) if they don't open one, your already paying for it.

Contact your Mayors office they will (have too) give you information on meeting schedules, etc. Become active in your community, "you do have a voice".

Just another example of life today in the good 'ol "U.S. of who can we ^%#%$# today!"

CABLE Tv's original charter when it first arrived in the seventies, was you paid a subscription fee so you could watch TV without commercials. Somehow that got lost and replaced with what we have now, a nearly unwatchable ratio of 16 minutes per hour of advertising...why do we pay anything for this ...they have managed to creep in more ads over the years to what now amounts to double dipping. The airwaves are a public utility and we should not have to put up with such baloney if our legislators and regulators were not all on the take, legally...in what passes for the good 'ol "U.S. of who can we &^$^#^% today!"

Started in the 60's was originally used to receive reception. Two towns fought for the right to say they were first, one was in Washington the other in New Hampshire. A town in Delaware actually put a marker on a rock to say they were first. (I think Biden & his rinking buddies went out & put it there after a stuper )But your onto the right idea.

Don't just blame the companies and politicians though, blame Albert Pujols, Alec Baldwin, Drew Brees, Lady GaGa oh hell the entire NFL, NBA, MLB, now the NHL the Spanish language channels, Tom Hanks and the Hollywood gang.

Believe me if the Angels only had ticket sales to pay Pujols salary their tickets would cost thousands per seat. In turn that's why we pay 200 for Nike sneakers the moneey's got to come from somewhere.

Now how do we protest!! DON'T BUY THE PRODUCT. Asics and Brooks make a fine product and much cheaper. Minor league games are just as entertaining, & cheaper. Spend the night with your kids, wife, dog. Maybe find out who they are and what they're up too.
Take up a hobby, a craft nobody does crafts anymore! Learn to play bassoon or french horn and drive neighbors crazy. Better yet learn how to fix your car or the plumbing and really save bucks.

I have never understood why anyone would pay for television. Why pay for a medium whose sole purpose is to sell you stuff & introctrinate you?

The only (mostly) reason I have a Comcast account is for high speed net access. There is no other alternative for speed. DSL is sucky and there are no other options. If and when a fiber option presents itself I'll be the first in line.

There are maybe 10 channels on the entire comcast lineup that are worth watching and even those channels have slim pickings most of the time.

I've been getting by on an Apple TV and an iPad.

This allows me to get over the air TV, Netflix, NBC app (streamed from iPad to Apple TV), Hulu app (streamed from my iPad to my Apple TV), CNN Video (streamed from iPad to TV), youtube, vimeo, itunes video, and I subscribe to NBA league pass.

I spend roughly $24 a month in a 12 month period, not counting for internet bill and the upfront cost of buying a Apple TV and iPad.

OR you can get an Xbox or PS3 for less than the Apple TV and iPad combined and get the same.

I agree with the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii option over the stand alone content-streaming-only Apple box.

If someone could invent a high quality package with only the channels and types of programs people want to watch-that would be great.
Also, if people could invent a way to eliminate the ads-more people would sign up for the program.
Can't wait for the new "Idiots Abroad." I will have to camp out a friends home.
