With the new year almost upon us, resolutions are probably on the minds of many -- and just in case one of yours is lending out a helping hand more often, HuffPost Chicago presents our final selection of cats and dogs up for adoption in the Chicagoland area of 2011. What better way for these pets to start out the new year than to find a new 'furever' home?

Since we began this feature, many pets seen on the site have found homes and we couldn't be more pleased that that is the case. Still, however, many more pets we've previously featured are still waiting to be taken home -- be sure to visit past weeks' features below the photo gallery.

Photos appear courtesy of the Naperville Area Humane Society, Felines Inc. and Famous Fido Rescue and Adoption Alliance. To our knowledge, all animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date with their tests and vaccinations.

As always, if you have an adoption shelter success story you would like to share, please send a note (and a picture) to chicago@huffingtonpost.com and we will be sure to feature your pet's tail, er, tale.

I am a push over for a dog. Have had a dog most of my life. I got two dogs right now that I adopted and saved from being put down. Those two dogs are smart and awesome. No problems with them. House trained, they can do all sorts of tricks and they stay alert for anyone or anything entering the yard. . Dogs rule!

If I lived in Chicago I would go get Barney right now. He's adorable, but then again, they all are in their own way.
