Gay Nativity Scene At Claremont United Methodist Church Vandalized

12/29/11 07:29 PM ET   AP

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Vandalism of a church's Nativity display that includes depictions of gay and lesbian couples was being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

The damage at Claremont United Methodist Church occurred late Saturday or Sunday morning.

The display's three panels feature silhouettes of three hand-holding couples – two men, two women and a heterosexual pair. The vandal knocked over the depictions of the gay and lesbian couples but left the straight couple alone.

"It's a hate crime based on it being church property as well as the wooden box knocked over that depicted two males holding hands," Claremont police Sgt. Jason Walters told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

The display created by artist church member John Zachary includes the phrase "Christ is born" and a Star of Bethlehem but no traditional manger figures. For the past six years, Zachary has designed and built a scene on the church's front lawn. The scene has had controversial themes before, but this was the first about gay couples, the Daily Bulletin said.

Zachary said the artwork suffered at least $3,000 worth of damage. The exhibit had three panels that weighed 600 pounds each.

The Rev. Dan Lewis said he was saddened by the incident.

"We have members of our church who are gay and lesbian who it sends a very personal message to," said Lewis, who learned of the vandalism on Christmas Day. "I tried to say in worship on Sunday morning that we will not let it trouble us."

Ed Kania, 60, an openly gay member of the church, called the act of vandalism disappointing, especially because Claremont is a generally seen as a progressive college town.

"It's a reminder that although there are pockets of acceptance, not everybody is accepting," he told the Los Angeles Times. "We're all kind of disappointed, but we're using it as a rallying point."

No one has the right to vandalize property. Whether we like what is on it or not. If someone does not like what they see, look the other way, leave a note. If they have really strong feelings against something, write a letter, e-mail,twitter what-ever. To destroy someone else's property means you have no self control and need to get help. What some people call Art, others call Junk, I for one am glad that we all have different views. We have free will, we need to know the right way to use it.

Has anyone here googled "images Claremont CA nativity" -- do it. You'll see that the headline is very misleading. There are dozens of photos from various distances and angles and it is clear that this is not a "nativity scene" -- there's no Jesus, no Mary, no manger, no shepherds, nothing that could be called a nativity scene. Oh, yeah, there is one star, but that hardly qualifies as a "nativity scene."

Homosexuality exists in people and in many other species. It is my hope that all religions will finally realize that they should stop condemning god's creatures.
01:39 PM on 01/05/2012
@Oletha, although it is true 'homosexuality' exists in people and many other species, the God of Moses specifically called his people to come out of their former ways and to be set apart as unique and holy. That is the main difference. Thank goodness Jesus came along to give us salvation and the remission of sin. Although we all have sin of some kind we still have the ability for receive forgiveness. Probably homosexuality is the toughest issue of all and you are right for us not to condem. Jesus did say "love" covers a multitude of sin. It is out of love that we are encouraged to operate out of. Yet Olethea we still have to remind ourselves Judaism, Christianity or any other religion has the right to be set apart and respected. Jesus once said rend to Ceasar what's belongs to Ceasar and to God what belongs to God. So it is today. God allows both civil law and religious law to prevail. You do the chosing to which you belong. The problem occurs when people try to put the round pegs in the square holes because they lack understanding of words, laws, principles or trying to manipulate to push an agenda. A lot of people try to twist a lot of things. I agree If only everyone could operate out of decency, compassion and a respect for others we would all be better people.

What I'm saying is that I think you have it wrong. I think the religious texts have been manipulated and people use them to shape the world as they want.

If there is a god, I highly doubt it cares who we love. Just that we love is right.

Ziggy, none of those claimes are true.

The bible is not a book of facts, it is a book of stories. The most basic values you see in the bible existed long before the bible itself; it's called the golden rule and it evolved with humans as they developed societies. It still says nothing about homosexuality, except what you have twisted to fit the narrative that's been handed to you.

Dolphins, giraffs, bonobos.....homosexuality exists in all of these species and many more. God keeps making gay creatures, and you belittle them.

Now that's a a fact.

i do not support vandalism, regardless you agree or not with what is in done in the nativity!!
You are entitle of your own opinion, and form of expression, even though, i need to admit that a gay nativity for me is disrespectful for christians~!!!!
11:57 AM on 01/03/2012
Exactly what was so objectional about the scene? Two same sex couples and a hetro couple were shown holding hands underneath a shining star. I think your attitude disrespects what your doctrine is suposed to reflect.

Though God is love, He is God and has set a standard of holiness. So yes, it is disrespectful for the Nativity scene to depict sin as okay. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God but when are we going to man up and accept that God does not allow, permit and agree with "alternative" lifestyles. We all need salvation but in order for each of us to obtain salvation, we have to lay aside the old man "our sinful nature" and put on the new man " holiness". With holiness comes self- sacrifice and the church of today is not sacrifing the pleasures of this world.

A gay Nativity scene is indeed disrespectful. Not for the lie that "God doesn't love gays" but because it is true that God hates sin, and like it or not, homosexuality is a sin! Suppose the thief said "I was born this way", or the liar said "I have to lie, I was born this way and it's all I've ever known"? We were alll born in sin and shapen in iniquity and it should behoove us to do all we can to be in right standing with God, no matter what we have to give up.

The Methodist church is now run by gays who seem to have their own view of the bible. What they do in this church should mean nothing to any Christian. I could care less if they want to dance with dolls or hang a rainbow flag outside their building because it has as much meaning to Christmas as Santa does. Now if my church started doing this, I would leave which is my choice. If you are going to a church run by a gay pastor I think you know what you can expect from the start. That said Christians should not worry about what other religions are doing.
02:30 PM on 01/03/2012
That is the problem. Christianity is based on the bible, and this one does not accept homosexuality!!! If there is any other church that accepts this, they are not really christians, they can call it like that, but they are not christians!!!

Another group didn't think it needed what's become the New Testament. I wish they had ALSO won. Then we might have an easily understood Bible of one sentence: "Accept God's love and allow it to transform you so that you love others in like fashion." Of course, those who prefer to market a message of a God that should be feared will, no doubt, find a way to twist even that.

Jesus didn't say anything about homosexuality. He did however, condemn divorce and fornication.

So, logic would dictate that to be a good Christian , one would have to promote gay marriage and oppose all divorce.

Well, let's get that same Bible out and analyze your life to see if you meet the standards. You don't! As a matter of fact, the Bible even says it is a sin to even imagine sin. You cannot win, so there is no way you can do anything about it at all. May you be judged according to your judgments. If you read your Bible, you will find that even if a gay person lived their entire life celibate, they would still be condemned by The Law. Well, guess what? We are no longer under The Law! Your condemnation of others is also condemned by the Bible. Hebrews says that every priest is taken from among men so they can identify with man and "succour those that are tempted." You have no compassion in your heart, so you are altogether unable to help others or be an ambassador of a Kingdom that is not of this world.

Lovers of
God and righteousness
Haters of sin and sinfulness.
Do you even understand the meaning of love?
Take giving your child a time out or grounding them, ask them if that is a act of love (especially at the time), but is it?
Teaching them right from wrong and that there is consequences for wrong behavior sure is in my book (the way I see it).
About the vandalism???
Were the one’s responsible, dishonoring the display and the church or honoring God and their faith? To me the answer to that makes a difference.
Like (maybe a bad comparison), murder, self-defense and a terrible accident. In all cases someone is very dead but….

Wake up: the Incarnation (Merry Christmass) has happened: Jesus has established his kingdom. That kingdom declares that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered." The "church" in this article is a cracked branch that is wilting.

No, you wake up! When did God bestow upon you his proxy to judge fellow humans? How arrogant of you to take it upon yourself and determine which faith system is right or wrong/good or bad. Church attendance for all faiths has been falling for decades due in part to younger generations having access to higher levels of education and developing critical thinking skills that allow them to think independently. More than ever before young men and women see alternatives to religious dogma being spewed from "churches" that have manipulated Christ's teachings for centuries as a method of controlling the masses. More progressive Christian faiths - those preaching Christ-like virtues of inclusiveness, tolerance and acceptance - are not wilting. If anything, Churches like the UCC and UUC are a refuge for both liberal and conservative Christians who are believers in the teachings of Christ and social justice causes such as civil rights, gay rights, women's rights and abortion rights. Now, if this upsets you go to YOUR church, seek guidance from YOUR religious leaders and pray to YOUR God but do not impose YOUR understanding of God on anyone else.
06:09 PM on 01/02/2012
The Bible makes clear homosexuality is a sin. If you believe The" Bible" is the word of God then you accept Homosexuality as sin, simple. Its is a complete joke that you would coorelate any level of education with faith. Some of the most highly respected scientists of our time are men and women of faith, so your point is null and void. Also, nobody needs to seek guidance from any religious leader that how churches like UCC andUUC get started. Open your Bible read it and you will find your answers.

“He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision .†(Psalms 2:4 AVRLE)
“24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof : 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.†(Proverbs 1:24-27 AVRLE)
I did not write the Bible,. but I have read it and not just the parts that agree with me, we are to conform to the word of God not to conform it to us.

Homosexuals should be welcomed in any church, if not its not a real church. Any church that does not help a person regardless of there particular faults is misguided. That said sin is still sin and a Church that accepts sin as ok is a very misguided church.

Not every church defines sin the same way your church does, as not everyone uses the same interpretation/translation of the Bible that you do. Not everyone believes that homosexuality is a "fault"...some people, using common sense and scientific research, accept it as a normal occurrance on the spectrum of human sexuality.

Love your neighbor does not mean tolerate and support him/her in sin. Jesus never tolerated sin, but called all to repentance.... Take care and study more

I didnt say tolerate sin. But every person in your church and mine is a sinner and most sin daily. Sin is sin whether its homosexuality, greed, taking the lords name in vain, lusting etc. For a church to turn its nose at someone for their sin is counter productive and wrong not to metion hypocritical.

I mean, heck...Jesus Christ overturned tables and beat the sellers in the temple.
