Newt Gingrich Cries In Iowa When Asked About His Mother

First Posted: 12/30/2011 1:05 pm Updated: 12/30/2011 3:17 pm

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Maybe his drop in the polls is getting to him.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is not known for emotional displays, but started to cry Friday morning when he was asked to talk about his mother during a town hall forum here with an audience mostly of moms.

"Well, first of all you'll get me all teary-eyed. Callista will tell you, I get teary-eyed every time we sing Christmas carols," Gingrich said, beginning to lose his composure when asked by GOP pollster Frank Luntz about his mom, Kit Gingrich, who died in 2003 at age 77.

He then choked out a few incoherent syllables as tears came to his eyes, before catching himself. "Excuse me," he said.

Gingrich righted himself with a joke.

"My mother sang in the choir. She loved singing in the choir," he said. "And I don't know if I should admit this, but when I was very young, she made me sing in the choir."

The audience laughed, but as Gingrich talked some more about his mother's physical and mental decline in her old age, he veered back toward tears.

"I identify my mother with, uh, being happy, loving life, having a sense of joy in her friends," he said. "But what she introduced me to is, late in her life, she ended up in a long-term care facility. She had bipolar disease and depression, and she gradually acquired some physical ailments."

"And that introduced me to the whole issue of quality long-term care," he said. "My whole emphasis on brain science comes in directly from dealing with -- um."

And then Gingrich completely lost it.

"See now you've got me completely emotional," he said.

He finished his thought asserting that he has come up with policy solutions based on "dealing with the real problems of real people in my family."

"So it's not a theory," he said, wiping away tears. "It's, in fact, my mother."

"I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich said.

Watch the moment here.

Gingrich is sinking fast on the polls. His opponents ads have hit him hard and he has little money to retaliate. Newt sees himself very much as sort of a intellectual leader of the free world and his emotionalism may be related to the narcissistic realization that people just do not like him very much. As said, his poll numbers are plummeting. He gets attacks on character issues, on flip flops in positions,  Read More...

Newt's Cry for (Electoral) Help didn't work.

Now the cry baby will illustrate another childish tactic: Revenge!! Mitt will feel the raft of Newt.

I wonder: "Can Newt Cry for pity and be vicious to Mitt at the same time, and expect the media to play up the tears"?

I am heartned by the numbers that see NG for what he is. He is a disaster, period. ALL pols are flawed, as they are people. Those who are Repubs: think of what you did by voting for Bush/Cheney. Obama is dealing with THEIR horrible legacy. He does NOT run the Government. He is dealing with the legislators & Supreme Court. He OWES all who did their piece of getting him into office. NO one is perfect. He has no magic wand. Mind you, I do NOT agree with all his decisions : particularly the tax refunds that take $ out of the SS fund. THAT is unforgiveable. READ : Dictatorship to Democracy by G. Sharp. It also can work to shake up the pols in a democracy. WE the people need to take over the government & FORCE them to do the right thing or be removed BODILY from OUR Senate & HoRs.

Gingrich is the candidate that can and will sink Obama. You are terrified of his abilities and that is why you talk so poorly about him.

What policy does he do better? The policy that he's against universal healthcare or Medicare For All for everyone else's mothers? Keep crying, I don't care to hear your stories and long as you discriminate against your fellow Americans' mothers. Family Values my a**. As long as you let people go bankrupt over inflated healthcare bills, you have no good morals -- it figures he'd cry over sappy songs and not give a damn about real people. This psycho can stuff it and go to h*ll.

He was crying about his own loss. He is a self-involved person, that is clear. His mom is fine now. He is wallowing around in his pain and missing being a Mama's Boy, having outrun two wives and finally marrying someone so young she could be his granddaughter! Awful man, too much baggage and now a Mama's Boy with Bi-polar genes? No thank you. I'll stick with Obama on this one!
11:12 AM on 01/02/2012
And, btw Newt, Bipolar and depression is genetic. We don't want a Bipolar president w his hand on the nuclear arsenal!
06:55 PM on 01/02/2012
Do your homework Bi-Polar is not an aoutomatic just because it is in your family history. Geez I cant stand ignorance of mental illnesses.

Newt,
You're going to make Washington uncomfortable? You're making all of us uncomfortable. We do NOT want a mama's boy in the White House. It is big-man business there, Newt. You think Obama is not man enough for the job?! His mom died and he carried on with aplomb. Hide your eyes in your third wife's apron Newt. We'll have none of your Mamaboy tears on our watch!
Signed,

I'm really glad this story is off the media cycle. I'm a Democrat - member of the party. However, I'm ashamed of how the media has covered this story. Tears for sympathy? Tears for votes? Tears because Gingrich isn't stable? Good Lord, media -- he's talking about his mother and her death. Is there no empathy in the media? His mom. He's allowed to be emotional.

Actually No -- impulse-control is an important skill as a world leader. He was unable to stop himself and he succumbed to his impulses, again, like all his affairs have shown. Of course now we realize he might just be Bi-polar, which has as a symptom, lack of impulse control. And we do not want a wamby-pampy Mama's Boy in the White House who cries whenever the impulse comes over him, because that means he is open to rage and other emotions that will overtake his ability to reason. No thanks. We had a Mama's Boy with George W. and that costs us thousands of American soldiers, billions of dollars and tens of thousands Iraqi's lives.

I'd like to see him cry over all the people bankrupt over health care bills from our greedy, dysfunctional healthcare system, breaking down families. That would be impressive in a leader. Anyone can cry about their own mother, that takes no special empathy.

i'm guessing the bipolar and depression runs in the family, he's a crass, vain, selfish little man, I cannot abide the notion of Calista as our first lady. it just goes to show how deep in the bottom of the barrell they had to scrape to come up with this pitiful crop of candidates. to think that there are people who actually think that a Michelle Bachman or a Herman Cain are qualified to lead this nation, mindboggling.

Our lives are defined by invisible wars, wars whose theater of combat is the human imagination. These economic and political wars are waged year in and year out, decade after decade, century after century.

War of the Words

The corporatists own the Republican Party, and large swathes of the Democratic Party too. Most Americans disagree with their ambitions, but they've been so good at designing and using these linguistic weapons that the public hasn't had a chance. Major media journalists have used these words as mantras, while too many Democrats have embraced them for their own selfish purposes.

That's why they keep winning so many battles, no matter who's in power.

Some people make the mistake of underestimating the importance of these wars, because they're fought with words and not actions. But people's actions are shaped by what they believe, and what they believe is shaped by words.

Nobody understands that better than the corporate interests and their minions. That's why Newt Gingrich wrote a political memo in 1996 entitled, "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control."

Now there's a word that should strike fear in the heart: "Control."

He was moved by discussion of his Mother. Most of us would if we were talking about our Mother past tense. I like him even though he is establishlment Republican. Could anyone running mess things up worse than Obama has? I'll vote for anyone else. NOBAMA!
