Ron Paul In Iowa Takes Break From 'Ideological' Campaign Ahead Of Caucuses

First Posted: 12/30/11 11:26 PM ET Updated: 12/31/11 11:00 AM ET

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- For just under an hour Friday night, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) held an audience of almost 300 Iowans spellbound as he gave a hopscotching speech that touched on a wide range of topics bound together by his libertarian-tinged conservatism.

Paul's passion to promote his beliefs and discourse at length on his philosophy of government may also explain why, instead of barnstorming the state like every other candidate, the 76-year-old politician is going home to Texas for the weekend, four days before Iowans caucus on Tuesday, when he is predicted to win or finish second.

Another reason for his departure may be that the Paul campaign is highly organized and expects to turn out their supporters by virtue of their efficiency, more so than candidate appearances. Or it may also be that Paul's support among voters has been capped at a certain level by a renewed interest in newsletters published under his name in the '80s and '90s that carried statements with racist sentiments toward minorities.

Whatever the case, top officials in Paul's campaign insisted that the candidate's absence from Iowa for two days ahead of the caucuses had nothing to do with a larger philosophical or strategic point of view.

"We built that into the plan. We campaigned pretty hard last week for two days, three days this week. We've got Jan. 2 and 3. I think it's the right amount of campaigning," said Drew Ivers, Paul's state campaign chairman.

The presidential candidate, in a full suit and tie unlike the other candidates who are campaigning in more casual attire, began his Friday night speech with a discursive assessment of U.S. foreign policy, including its recent history of foreign entanglements, and attacked the current culture of a "war fever" that he said makes it "easier for the government to undermine liberties."

Paul went out of his way to defend his "non-interventionist" view of foreign policy, which he said "has nothing to do with isolationism." And he talked for roughly 15 minutes about why his position is not one that will weaken the U.S.

"If you're fighting wars that make no sense ... it's not making us safer," he said. "It's making us more vulnerable."

He returned more than once to the issue of U.S. currency, arguing that the printing of dollars by the Federal Reserve is an attempt to get rid of sovereign debt through inflation, but in the process is destroying the value of middle-class Americans' savings.

He attacked the secrecy of the Federal Reserve: "One reason they don't want oversight is if we found out what they've been doing, they know their days would be limited, because people would just be furious about how they manage and take care of their friends, and they certainly did that in 2008 after the markets crashed," he said.

Then he jumped to the current problems in Europe with sovereign debt.

"The people who have been making the money -- and they're in trouble -- I would say, let them go bankrupt and not dump it onto the people," he said. "But that is the plan. The plan is in motion. They did it in 2008."

Paul spent the better part of 10 minutes near the end talking about the federal budget and what he would cut (the Department of Education and other federal agencies) and what he would not cut, if he became president (Social Security benefits and medical care for the elderly and indigent children). "If we don't cut spending, everybody's going to get hurt," he said.

But as Paul wrapped up his 55-minute talk, he came to the point of his third run for president, which seemed quixotic in 2008 and is still not taken seriously by many, yet has gathered enough support to be on the verge of winning the first contest in the primary.

"This is ideological. Ideas do have consequences. Ideas are changing," Paul said. "It isn't a numbers game. It has to do with determination and the rightfulness and truthfulness of ideas."

"I do not know what the future will bring, but I do know that a message can be sent. And hopefully a message can be achieved in this election, this campaign. Maybe on Tuesday, who knows?" said Paul. "I don't know what the results will be. But I am optimistic that we're moving in the right direction and that many people are awakening now to the need for more liberty and less government."

It is this ideological fight -- Paul's assault on the idea of an ever-growing federal government and federal budget -- that encapsulates why Paul is running, and explains why he has attracted such a following.

Paul's success in attracting substantial numbers of intensely devoted followers has led some to believe that he has a chance to become the nominee. Realistically, Paul still is a huge long shot -- at best -- because of the way in which his foreign policy views clash with those of many on the right and in the GOP.

But on Friday night there was no mistaking that for Paul, his ideas are what drive him. He was scheduled to take questions from the crowd but spoke so long that he had only time to shake a few hands.

"I have a confession to make: I talk too long," he said. "I hope I didn't bore you."

The crowd applauded to signal he had not.

Paul has fought for the people his entire public life. He deserves every person's support.
11:08 AM on 01/02/2012
Yes he does. He's the only independent choice. All others, especially Romney, are machine politicians. It appears that the media would like a final two of Obama and Romney, as they feel Romney is the easiest for Obama to beat in a general election. The mistake being made in this election is, independent voters will vote for change. They will not support the incumbent after witnessing the corruption during his first term. Independent voters never forget, and cannot be led around by the nose by any propagandists. We vote for whoever the hell we want.

An article that quotes Ron Paul's stances on major issues with adding the "nutty" qualifier. Thank you. Love his philosophy, hate it, or somewhere in between; it is a bit refreshing. For all those who believe the big banksters and the big multi-national corporations want him in - just follow the money. It is really that simple. Check out opensecrets.org and you can see that Ron Paul is getting most of his campaign funds from average, middle class, Americans. Our meetup group is Republican, Democrat and Independent - young and old, white and Brown. I have never heard him make a racist remark, the head of the Austin NAACP, who has known him for 22 years, says the charges are being made simply to discredit him and that he is not racist. His policies are anything but racist when it comes to drug laws. The "he voted against a medal for Rosa Parks" is an obvious slander since it was on the principle of the government paying for the medal - he offered to pony up his own money but the other millionaires would have none of that. He voted for Martin Luther King Day. I could go on, but if you are simply supporting someone else you will close your ears and mind, repeating the smear remarks made by rich, white men that could care less about the plight of minorities in this country.

I'm sure you're completely right. The American news media is acting like the old soviet news agency Tass these days. Propaganda running like water.

And at least the Soviet people knew better than to believe their media.

I find the real insight into Ron Paul doesn't come from the left Huffpost but better from the left Salon. This is one of the better articles on what is at stake for out republic...http://www.salon.com/2011/12/31/progressives_and_the_ron_paul_fallacies/singleton/

Like him or not, Dr. Paul deserves credit for bringing uncomfortable dialogue to the table.

How much longer will we support subjecting women and children to the depleted uranium used in our artillery? It's been going on since the 1990s. President Obama is merely the latest of Presidents to maintain a war in which we use nuclear arms against civilians.

How much longer will we support the erosions of the very Rights that made us a free country? President Obama is no different than President Bush; worse since he sanctions assassinations without charge and detainment without trial. (That's neither a liberal or progressive belief.)

How much longer will we allow run-away spending, corporate and media manipulation, laws written to benefit special interest groups and the utter lack of transparency? Again, President Obama is carrying on the same tradition as those before him.

Are Democrats willing to say they will accept killing innocent children, accept the loss of civil liberties and turn a blind eye to corruption in exchange for abortion rights and social programs?

Are Republicans willing to say they will accept killing innocent children, accept the loss of civil liberties and turn a blind eye to corruption in exchange for illegalizing abortion and getting rid of food stamps?

People really need to ask themselves what they will accept in exchange for what they want.

Happy New Year 2012 to ALL!

Ron Paul has a 30 year record of upholding individual freedom, rights, liberty, based on the Constitution. He opposes the corrupt over-powered Federal government with things like the privacy invasion of the TSA, the evil Patriot Act, the 4th amendment killing NDAA bill, the internet censorship bill SOPA, the racist and corrupt War on Drugs, and the unjust wars in the middle east. Ron Paul is the only one fighting against those issues. Ron Paul is the ONLY vote that can beat Obama, pulling votes from dissatisfied Dems, the growing Independent population, and a growing portion of the Republicans. A vote for Paul is the ONLY vote for peace, prosperity and liberty.
11:17 AM on 01/02/2012
You're wrong about one thing, Obama will not win this next election regardless of who opposes him. The dem voters alone cannot beat the repub AND the independent voters together. The independent voters already know that Obama is corrupt, so he is gone.

What a fluff job. Ron Paul is a kook, and if his "ideas" ever got implemented in our government, it would be a disaster of unmitigated proportion. No thanks to the Libertarian vision of a society-of-the-fittest society. I like my government compassionate, not hands-off.

"Ron Paul is a kook" Would you like a cracker Polly? Honestly, acting like a MSM parrot does nothing to further the debate.

As for liking your government compassionate. So do I and that includes NOT waging wars that destroy lives and our national treasure. That includes NOT taking away our liberty or locking people up for non-violent drug offenses. That includes letting the people keep as much of their money as possible because THEY earned it. It also includes ending corporate welfare, bailouts and reigning in an out of control FED.

Those are not things that the other candidates or Obama are offering us.

Liberty equals prosperity for all of us.

Just how much liberty and prosperity would the average person have after federal regulations on corporations and banks are removed? Leaving corporations to fill the power vacuum left after the government has been whittled down to nothing is an apocalyptic vision of this country's future that is already too near.
It isn't the government that caused this recession, it was Wall Street and the financial institutions.
03:07 PM on 12/31/2011
"I like my government compassionate, not hands-off"

Really? Your govt that continues to bomb innocent Muslim civilians without any repercussions. Your govt that institutionalized a policy of assassinations of American citizens and extrajudicial indefinite detentions. Your govt that enforces crippling sanctions that impoverishes the poor and empowers the ruling class of other countries. Your govt that continues clandestine CIA ops that carry out assassinations and overthrowing other govts. Your govt that has expanded the vicious prosection of non-violent drug offenders that punishes minority communities. Your govt that secretly bails out the banking and corporate elite. Your govt that has eroded the Bill of Rights with legislation such as Patriot Act, SOPA (coming soon), and NDAA bill. Your govt that flaunts the Constitution and War Power Act by going to war without consulting Congress. Your govt that flaunts executive power by writing laws thru executive orders. Your govt that appeases special interests at the expense of the working class.

And the only thought you can come up with is Paul is a "kook?" You might want to take a second look because he is the ONLY candidate (Obama or any other Repub) that is running on a platform to reverse this "government compassion" that I just listed.

Anyway... happy new year and good luck!
