Des Moines Register Poll Shows Mitt Romney In Lead Ahead Of Iowa Caucus

First Posted: 12/31/2011 7:03 pm Updated: 01/01/2012 9:53 am

WASHINGTON -- At the end of a year in which five different candidates took turns leading in polls of likely Iowa caucus-goers, the final and most respected survey shows the Iowa caucuses headed toward a photo finish.

The final Des Moines Register Iowa poll shows Mitt Romney and Ron Paul leading the pack with 24 and 22 percent respectively, followed by 15 percent for Rick Santorum, 12 percent for Newt Gingrich, 11 percent for Rick Perry and 7 percent for Michele Bachmann.

But the pollsters report a twist: In the final two days of polling, Thursday and Friday nights, Romney still held a narrow lead (with 24 percent), but Santorum moved up to 21 percent, ahead of Paul at 18 percent.

The results remove any lingering doubt that Iowa is now Romney's to lose. The former Massachusetts governor has already suggested that he is all in in the Hawkeye State and is planning to spend caucus night in Des Moines.

But it remained unclear whether he was the prohibitive favorite against Ron Paul. A second-place finish now would carry a disappointing note.

Romney's top advisers huddled in the lobby of the Stoney Creek Inn in Sioux City, Iowa, as they waited for the Register poll results to be released. Once the numbers came in, their pleasure was clear, but they declined to comment, saying they would let the numbers speak for themselves.

The Register results also give major credence to talk of a Santorum surge. The former Pennsylvania senator may be third in the poll, but his showing in the final two days of polling suggests a candidacy on the rise. He may be the beneficiary of near-perfect timing as well, with precious hours left until voters caucus and expectations still relatively low.

Santorum said in Ottumwa, Iowa, that he was pleased with the poll results and that he's headed in "the right direction."

"I feel very comfortable that the momentum is in our favor and we're going to surprise a lot of people," he told reporters after a rally.

Santorum attributed his recent success to people becoming more confident that he can beat Romney, whom he said many conservatives do not want to win in Iowa. He said he won't do anything differently in the next two days and will continue to be accessible to voters and reporters. "I'm a tortoise," Santorum said. "I just keep moving."

"People are realizing that I can win this," he added. "Probably earlier in the polls, they didn't know that we were doing as well. And I think the fact is that people are now saying, 'Hey, this is a guy that can actually win. We always wanted to be for him, but we weren't because we didn't think he could win.'"

Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond downplayed the importance of the Iowa Poll results and his candidate's fourth-place finish.

"If this is the Super Bowl, then we just saw the pre-game show," said Hammond. "But everyone knows the real action happens after kickoff."

The poll of 602 likely Republican caucus-goers was conducted Dec. 27-30 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The sample included 302 likely caucus-goers interviewed in the final two days of polling with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.

The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll is the nation's longest continuously running newspaper poll, and it has asked Iowans about their caucus preferences since the 1980s. The Register and its current pollster, Ann Selzer, gained further acclaim four years ago when their final pre-caucus survey was the only public poll to show Barack Obama with a wide lead over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. It was also the only poll to accurately forecast the "dramatic influx" of first-time caucus-goers that helped propel Obama to his eventual Iowa victory.

The results of the latest Register poll are broadly consistent with those from other surveys and are a close match to those from HuffPost Pollster's Iowa chart based on all public polls. The chart, like the Register poll, shows Romney leading Paul, with Santorum moving ahead of Gingrich into third place.

The most pronounced trends across all of the recent surveys have been the collapse of support for Gingrich, who led the field on the last Register poll with 25 percent, and the more recent rise of Santorum.

That said, even the widely respected Iowa Poll is still just a poll, with the same potential for error as any other survey, and the Iowa caucuses have a history of volatility and surprise not predicted even by the final polls. With less than a week remaining before caucus night, 41 percent of likely caucus-goers said they could still change their minds about which candidate to support.

Probably, the only citizen-type that can confront oligarchy and breaks it death grip on the American jugular is another oligarch. A guy like Obama is awed and intimidated by plutocratic and aristocratic wealth. He was easily turned into their ally and agent. The only clues to the direction that a Romney may lead the nation is in his past. First, he appears pragmatic and reality-oriented with no particular  Read More...

2. Continue with any of one of the other same old sell outs who work to manipulate each and every one of us to the betterment of the Corporate World, notice I didn’t say Corporate America, as it has spread much greater and wider throughout the world to eventually get to the one world government / new world order / one world power taking as much from the common man as possible and reducing the value of each one of our lives liberty and freedoms. Wake up and help make the change for the betterment for us all and our children. Ron Paul is the only light in real change for the people.

9. Anyone who accuses me of being a "Paulite" or anything else then you do not personally know me. I'm an American who thinks critically, rationally, and objectively. I am an American in favor of American preservation, which at this point the torch is only being carried by Ron Paul as far as presidential candidates.

10. If a tribunal were held today and we brought back the founders of America to be the judges on the preservation of the American government and the course we are on, they would revolt against us more vigorously than they did against the King of England.

7. Why would we allow anyone to name a social program after themselves despite the many years of struggle and work leading up to this "Obamacare?" This is not hinting of socialism? And I am not saying that medical reform is not necessary, but it has to be done carefully and responsibly with all things considered. This is why so many people oppose Obamacare in alarming numbers.

8. Back to racism. I have experienced racism as a mixed person. Those who think certain policies and not honoring certain people or causes amounts to racism, you do not know the true meaning of it at all. There are too many dedications to people and too many honors as it is, which cheapens the cause and flies in the face of so many others who are as equally dedicated and supportive to causes as those we honor... some who were killed in the process of their cause. Dedications should be done in very limited and narrow circumstances and generally not paid for with American tax dollars. That was the point being made by Ron Paul and it has nothing to do with racism.

The only things separating Americans from Cubans are the rights we have demanded.

5. Trying to find an "all perfect" leader among the human race is inherently impossible. Rejecting or accepting any candidate based upon one or a few causes makes no sense and here is why: A United States president cannot forcibly implement most of his or her policies, or the term "lame duck" would not be coined of our leaders. There are many steps to go through. So, when the word "extreme" comes up regarding candidates such as Ron Paul, it is only to scare people off. If his ideologies conflict with others, it will spark healthy debate among Americans. We can still think for ourselves and oppose ideologies as freely as we so choose under the law of the land. This makes one a patriotic American.

6. If all adult men and women are responsible for their own actions, then all political leaders definitely need to be held responsible individually for theirs.

3. At no time do we need to try to understand or accept a terrorist or terrorist countries! We cannot trust the Middle East. This is an irrefutable fact that is demonstrated time and time again.

4. Obama's continual engagement in these protracted military wars is deepening our trillions in debt and making matters far worse overseas, creating more enemies, and it remains illegal warfare. The majority of the world is AGAINST U.S. foreign intervention policies as they are now. This is worth putting in all caps... How can we be so arrogant as to think: "Oh, they are just jealous of us?" Really? Remember, many countries who are against our policies also greatly profit from our country.

On the other hand, how can we be so ashamed as to allow our leader to go over to foreign countries and apologize for what we do -- but still do it? How is that logical? It does not take a political scientist to figure this out, folks. Such contradictions are proof of the actual ineptitude of a super power gone completely haywire. In the haze of liberal activism (especially gay rights) and "anti-terrorism" propaganda, the leadership has been slowly given carte blanche authority over our rights and freedoms.

Such rights and freedoms, if allowed to erode, means that ultimately the colors red, white, and blue runs from our tattered flag waving. Bye bye to America and an affront to those who died to give us that right.

Is a state that allows anyone to change party and vote in the same day really reflect a single parties views? Kinda like Rush Limbaughs quest to gum up the Dems in 08. Sadly this is nothing new and won't be stopping anytime soon. I'm still tryin to figure out who is running interferance for who.

The most intelligent and qualified of the GOP candidates isn't even campaigning in Iowa. This could be a mistake. Not sure if putting all of his cards on New Hampshire is wise; but he brings a better resume for government then any of the other 6 candidates.

Look at background. Raised in a business atmosphire. Check fathers businesses. Was an ambassador to China, the next country we have to deal with. Foreign knowledge will take the next President far. As you can see from the last 12 years, lack of that knowledge lead us down TWO 2 wars that have been costly and taken this country into financial catastrophy, and the cost of many lives.

Dealing with China is going to be a big one---which Romney doesn't want to do. Iran is another issue lurking at us. Look at the other candidates and assess which has enough background and can deal with Iran.

ron paul has been an washington insider for years and hasnt shown any leadership there .the country needs a president with business and excutive leadership and i think their best hope is romney.while not perfect he has a better rounded career then any of the canidates.paul has some good ideas but his foreign policy ideas are to extreme.
01:05 PM on 01/02/2012
You ,mean his position on foreign policy of stop taking billions of dollars from poor people in the USA and giving these billions to rich people in a poor country, that would be bad to take that away. Check Paul's voting record in DC, and you will see he does not just go with flow as the other corporate cronies do. Must be some reason why Paul is not a multi millionaire after being there so long, and all the others come out of DC millionaires, why is this, and how did these people get so rich by being public servants?? Time to audit all politicians, and their families, and time to close to public trough.

Hey HUFF, in your other posting here, you said Paul was leading, but statistically tied with Romney and Santorum? Which is it? or is it a case like my grand-father used to say----" First liar ain't got a chance" ? We are tired of irresponsible reporting

Hey Huff you need to get your facts straight about this caucus, today only you have given 3 different "LIEs " so farabout the IOWA caucus, so which one do we know to believe, and you expect people to call and depend on you to be a good reputable news source, if you report like this i iwll gladly take my chances with FOX!!!!!!

Romney put zero effort in the race in Iowa and for him to be leading says alot about the other candidates. All you contributors lost your money because you never had a chance. Flip Flop Romney will be your candidate. It will be like haveing 2 liberals running for president and you're going to do it for us.
