Princess Mary & Prince Frederik Wear Jewels, Medals, Velvet For New Year's Day (PHOTOS)

Lest you think that royals these days just wear casual duds like jumpsuits and jeans, Princess Mary and Prince Frederik are holding down the tradition of velvet, medals and glittering crowns.

The Denmark royals attended a New Year's banquet at Christian VII's Palace at Amalienborg, the Royal Couple's winter residence. For the event, Mary ditched her typical print dresses for a long-sleeve velvet gown in a deep red wine hue.

In addition to a crystal belt buckle at her waist, the princess accented the dress with two large brooches and a heavy necklace with an elephant pendant, which symbolizes the Order of the Elephant, Denmark's highest order.

She also wore a giant diamond tiara. We are majorly jealous.

Her husband also got totally decked out, wearing a black military uniform with fringed gold epaulets, a smattering of brooches, an Order of the Elephant necklace to match his wife's and a jaunty black hat with a gold feather in it. Oh, and a walking stick.

So you see, dear readers, sometimes royals are not just like us. That's why we love them. Check it out below.

It's not that I don't like skinny jeans, cause I own a couple pairs myself, it's the whole casual look altogether: the baggy jeans, the ripped up jeans, the pants halfway down the butt, the hoody. A girl just needs some glam in her life :)

I can't say i wouldn't want to rock that look given the opportunity. A chest full of medals and a Princess in velvet and diamonds on your arm never is a bad thing.

The "walking stick" that the Prince is carrying appears to actually be a sword. Note the gold sword knot.

With the hat he looks like a pimp.

Still playing dress up. What a waste. I wonder how many kids without food could eat with the price of all that?

In Denmark? There is probably a much lower percentage of hungry children in Denmark than in our country.

Really, and if you think in selling those jewels, that belong to the country of Denmark, the money would go to hungry children, then think again, that money wouldbe in some crooks pocket and he would end up buy things like those jewels so he could impress his friends. All the crown jewels in world from the countries that have them could not and would no feed or house all the hungry children and the homeless of the world. The world, humans/people don't work that way.

I kind of agree that one brooch or even no brooches would have worked well also.
