Story by Kate Sosin, courtesy of the Windy City Times:

A local LGBT activist is planning a demonstration in front of Holy Name Cathedral, 730 N. Wabash Ave., in the wake of Cardinal Francis George's comments that compared the gay liberation movement to the Ku Klux Klan.

The protest, to be held in the morning on Sunday, Jan. 8, is the first scheduled demonstration against George after he told Fox News Chicago that the gay-right movement was at risk of morphing "into something like the Ku Klux Klan, protesting in the streets against Catholicism." George has reiterated his controversial marks twice since the initial comment.

While I disagree with his reference, the basic idea was valid: the gay movement goes out of its way to be insulting to Catholics. Look at ACTUP disrupting Masses, the NYC gay pride parade waving anatomically correct dildoes in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral, deliberately misrepresenting Church teachings -- rescheduling parades to confilct with Masses. Apparently the only valid viewpoint is theirs and they'll take down -- or try to -- anyone who disagrees.

After almost a quarter of a century hearing confessions and counseling individuals and families, I know that sexual orientation is not merely a political, sociological or psychological issue. At core, what this is truly about is discrimination and its hurtful and harmful impact on simple human dignity and the lives of real people.

Bullying, employment discrimination, denial of service in the armed-forces under the recently repealed “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, denial of adoption rights, denial of Civil Marriage rights, all attempt to force LGBT people into lives of secrecy, shame, denial, fear and foster self-hatred. The Center for Disease Control’s Youth Risk Behavior Study of 1999 found that 33% of gay adolescents attempt suicide. A statistic that we were tragically reminded of last year when several young LGBT students took their own lives. That is the true cost of bigotry in the lives of countless LGBT people, their families and loved ones.

Cardinal George’s comparison of LGBT people who are simply seeking full Federal equality as American citizens with the KKK, a notorious hate group that seeks to deny full Federal equality to minorities, is both an inversion and a denial of the truth. George’s words constitute both a grave injustice and a moral outrage. By vilifying members of a minority group he targets them for prejudice and hate crimes.

If the Catholic Church (and other religious groups are as well) is actively trying to prevent the legalization of gay 'marriage' there may be a very practical reason.
Neither the Catholic Church nor other religious group want to be forced by the government to marry people they don't believe marriageable according to their definition of marriage.
The Catholic Church sees homosexual unions as going against nature (the potential fruit of a
heterosexual relationship is not possible by the physical interaction of a homosexual relationship.
Homosexual relations cannot possibly result in the birth of a new person).
Why would the Catholic Church want to be forced to perform marriage ceremonies between the un-marriable as the Church defines marriage?
The protests by gay groups insisting such is unreasonable and in some cases the behavior
of gay participants might be analogized to certain behavior of the KKK members.

You just hit upon the root of the issue: Catholicism is homophobic and bigoted. That is why it will continue to persecute homosexuals.

Like the Catholic church needs another reason to be ridiculed and lambasted. How sad that ignorance still rules.

Nah, I'd rather that the LGBT folks drag the Bishop for miles behind their pickup truck, string him up, and light him on fire.

Why not see if being the KKK is perceived differently by the Bishop?

Total,
You seem to me to be insisting the Catholic Church legitimize/accept your lifestyle as morally o.k.
The Pope's not buying it. The Cardinal's not buying it.
Why is it necessary. You live in a free society and can live as you want.
Why is it necessary the Church enlist in the program of accepting gay intimacy as legitimate.
You can still be a Catholic and be gay. But the Church isn't going to legitimize gay marriage.

Please the Pope and most of the Cardinals are most likely closeted homosexuals, I know 2 homosexual Roman Catholic Priests and they tell me that around 60% of the Priests they know are Homosexuals, and they know a lot of Priests.

My " Lifestyle " as you called it is no less morally o.k. then yours or anyone else's. And I don't need the Churches stamp of approval to know that is a fact.

Why is it necessary for some in the Church to demonize millions of people because of there sexual orientation?

I know the Church is not going to legitimize gay marriage, but the rest of America will soon. A also know the Church is just to busy marring adulterers. Well my homosexual Roman Catholic Priest friends have told me that the Church may be opting out of doing Civil Marriages all together.

Though it does, apparently, legitimize anti-gay discrimination.

Because it insist upon treating gay people as if they were Children of a Lesser God.

...or worse.

The gay community will have to look elsewhere to legitimize their life style.
Cardinal George is too sophisticated and keen to the culture to put up with their phony b.s.

Cardinal George is far from sophisticated, When my Priest and his friends ( other Priests ) heard about the detestable thing he said about homosexuals, they were shocked but not surprised. Cardinal George is well known to be a problem, and having views that are out of touch with reality. The people that work for him are always doing damage control for that man.

And the Gay community does not need the Church to know that there " life style " as you called it is as legitimate as yours or anyone else's!!!

And anyone that reads this article and then posts what you did is not only a disgusting person, they are not a follower of Jesus Christ. Just as Cardinal George is not a follower of Jesus Christ by saying what he said.

Here are two things that strike me about your post: 1) Cardinal George has views that are in touch with his reality, with the reality of some other members of the Catholic hierarchy, and with the reality of some of the laity. So, your statement is incorrect. 2) None of us has the right to judge whether a person is a true follower of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, Allah, or any of the thousands of deities in Hinduism, etc. Remember, that we each have to answer to whatever higher power in whom we believe (if we believe). I'm sure that the cardinal loses no sleep over the path that he has chosen, and that if asked, he would be able to state the reasons he feels that he is following the mandates of his church and of Jesus. We don't have to believe it, but most assuredly he believes it.

His Eminence ought to be careful of what he says because there are a whole lot of gay priests in his own church!

The Cardinal is another of those pampered men in shiny robes who don't have a clue. How did they become the catholic spokespeople? They don't hold a candle to ordinary catholics doing charity work around the world.
01:30 AM on 01/06/2012
Um, well, let's see. In the Catholic Church, as in any organized religious organization, there is a hierarchy. Being a cardinal is one step below being Pope. So, it would make sense that Cardinal George would "act" as spokesperson of the Catholic Church. It really is quite simple. I'm surprised that you didn't figure that out.

This man is just another ideal representative of the RCC, no doubt from their PR office. And the Pope wonders why it's losing members at light speed.
01:32 AM on 01/06/2012
Oh, my goodness! If you think that one misspoken comment from a member of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is the reason, or any part of the reasons that Catholics are leaving the church, then you are out of touch with reality.

It isn't one spoken instance - this is just one instance that shows the deep running bigotry and homophobia that is the Catholic church. Combine that with all the examples of hypocrisy, criminal behavior, child harm, sexual misconduct, and greed that we've seen in the news for the last 10 years and you start to get a pretty clear picture of what Catholicism is about today.

If you think that one misspoken comment doesn't help to create a bad public image for an organization then you haven't been paying attention to either business or politics over the last 25 years.

VL, it's the cumulative effect such statements over many years. What evidence indicates this was a mere "slip?" Has he apologized at all? Do Bishops and Priests not represent the Vatican in their respective churches and dioceses?

I agree with Richard-it is you who is out of touch if you can't see the writing on the wall. The RCC is in a decline of its on making, due to a desire to be dogmatic and not recognize that life has left them behind.

Wow, I've never seen something some biased on the part of the interviewers, they were trying so hard to try get them to make outlandish statements, and trying to make what they did say sound outlandish. I'm just shocked Fox allowed gays on their stage. I bet they sanitized afterwords the bigots.

Because the Church is not a 'go along' type of organization.
