Mitt Romney Makes Final Pitch Ahead Of Iowa Caucus 2012

KASIE HUNT   01/ 2/12 07:36 PM ET   AP

MARION, Iowa — A confident Mitt Romney said Monday that he's going to win Iowa and become the Republican nominee for president.

"We're going to win this thing with all of our passion and strength and do everything we can to get this campaign on the right track," Romney told a raucous crowd gathered here on the last day of campaigning before Tuesday's caucus, "to go across the nation to get the ballots I need, the votes I need so I can become the nominee. That's what we're going to get."

When Iowa supporters stand up to speak for Romney at caucuses Tuesday night, they'll offer the same pitch the former Massachusetts governor is making: that he is the Republican candidate most capable of beating President Barack Obama.

Romney was focusing on areas of Iowa he won in 2008 in four rallies across the state Monday. At two earlier events with more muted crowds, he didn't talk about winning. But here, as people whooped and yelled throughout his speech, he was clearly upbeat as he criticized Democrats instead of his GOP rivals.

"They'll poison the very spirit of America and keep us from being one nation under God," he said. "I want see America united. I watch a president who's become a great divider, the great complainer, the great excuse giver, the great blamer."

Aides worked behind the scenes to ensure that his backers from his failed 2008 campaign would turn out Tuesday night to argue that the stakes next fall are enormous and that only Romney is capable of toppling the incumbent Democrat.

People like Carol Dowhey, 51, who plans to speak for Romney at a precinct in Atlantic, was among those who received a one-page speech for caucus night. "It's no wonder the White House has focused all of their attacks exclusively on Mitt Romney," the text says. "They know, like I know, that he is the toughest opponent they could possibly face."

Speakers were being told to mention Romney's success helping familiar businesses like Staples and Domino's Pizza and to emphasize that he has been married for 42 years and won't "embarrass the country."

The text says: "If you really want to send a message to Barack Obama – and I know I do – send it by voting for the one candidate they fear more than any other."

Romney campaigned Monday with South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who also made the contrast. "This is not a community organizer. This is somebody who knows how to create jobs," he said of Romney. He told voters to ask themselves: "Who is best positioned to win? We need to win."

The hope is that the pitch resonates as Romney is locked in a close race with libertarian Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who has limited appeal to the mainstream GOP, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has limited organization outside of Iowa.

On the eve of the caucuses, Romney's aides reiterated their view that regardless of whether he comes in first, second or third, Romney will emerge from the caucuses as the most likely nominee and remain the only one who can compete in all the contests in other early states.

"When voters start to look at who they want to be the nominee . we think that helps us," said Stuart Stevens, Romney's top strategist.

Romney aides acknowledge that losing to Paul or Santorum wouldn't be the same as a win. But they claim that they don't see Santorum as a threat on par with Mike Huckabee, the charismatic former Arkansas governor who united socially conservative voters in Iowa in 2008 and soundly beat Romney. They say Santorum just doesn't have the down-home appeal the Baptist preacher brought to the race.

"We'll see him in New Hampshire," said Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior Romney adviser.

“I went to a Morman sermon yesterday in Massachusetts where Romney used to practice. I've been to Catholic (which I was raised) many Protestant, even born again Christian groups. And I swear I saw very little difference in Morman than Portestant. All Christian, just slight differences. The biggest thing I saw different were everyone had rather large families. But the sermon didn't mention Romney and his son was at the service. It was like going to any church, nice people, and I felt were very open to me being there. I didn't feel any pretudice. I feel Romney would make a great President. But I am independent and still open to Obama convincing me. I will choose the day I vote. But going to this service made me see Romney really is just a different brand of Christianity. Whatever religion he was I would like him.”

The soul of America comes from the way our country treats it's citizens, not in the tearing down of the institutions that protects those citizens.

Sorry, Republican candidates, your quest for *soul* of this country was left in tatters after we saw your handiwork.

Mitt winning the "Soul of America" only in his dreams. Was the use of the word "Soul" to win support of the religous right or to win Blacks support? It was for the religous right.

Romney should first go borrow a SOUL (the real thing) before he can attempt to win any SOUL.

No Mitt you can't have this American's soul. Anyone with a soul wouldn't tie their dog to the roof of the car. Anyone with a soul wouldn't buy up companies and give all those pink slips just to make as much money as possible. Anyone with a soul wouldn't pander his butt off and flip flop all over the place.
03:22 PM on 01/02/2012
... and anyone with a SOUL will not say that his sons campaigning for him in 2008 was equivalent to them having served this country. I cannot comprehend this outlandish response. He not only flips and flops, but he also lies through his teeth about the conditions in France during his "Missionary Trip" there. In short he has no SOUL.

Romney can't win the soul of anything; certainly, he can't win the soul of America who knows he is an oligarch.

If you think Romney will help create jobs you are absolutely wrong. Think again, please. He has never created jobs except for maybe China. He is the man who would go into a company and eliminate jobs and make money for himself not anyone else. So hope you are ready to have buyers remorse after you vote and elect Mitt Romney. Mr Corporation.

Gosh!! such a phone guy.

At one of his live campaign events, Mitt Romney just described his father as a "guy who made Ramblers". This pervasive twisting of the truth comes worryingly naturally to him. Romney sr was CEO and huge shareholder in the company. Whilst he was technically correct, it certainly doesn't make nearly as charming a down-home tale than the way he told it.

Mitt's own tenure in the business world could be described as the man "who made job cuts".
