Rick Santorum Surges In Iowa, But Latino Vote May Be Out Of Reach

In the Republican primary's revolving door of anyone-but-Romney candidates, Pennsylvania underdog Rick Santorum has seen a late surge in the polls, finishing with a very strong second place in yesterday's Iowa caucuses. While Santorum emerges from Iowa as a leading candidate, it's unlikely that he would be able to win an important swing vote in 2012 election -- Latinos.

On Monday, New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote that Santorum is a "sensible candidate" that could pull ahead in the election with his Catholic, pro-family values and his son-of-an-immigrant narrative. While such factors would likely woo Hispanic voters, Santorum's hard line on illegal immigration may hurt his chances with the same demographic.

In a September Republican debate, Santorum called opponent Rick Perry "soft on illegal immigration" for supporting in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants and for refusing to build a border fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to a recent Pew Hispanic Center report, "84% of Latinos favor granting in-state tuition to unauthorized immigrants" and 91 percent were in favor of the DREAM Act, legislation that if passed would permit young adults who were brought to the U.S. illegally when they were children to become legal residents if they go to college or serve in the military for two years.

The same report also concluded that, "when it comes to better border security and stronger enforcement of immigration laws, the general public is nearly three times as likely as Hispanics (29% versus 10%) to say this should be the priority for dealing with illegal immigration."

At nearly every mention of immigration, Santorum invokes the beauty of the "American melting pot" and his own identity as the son of an Italian immigrant. Simultaneously, Santorum is insistent that drastic measures be taken to strengthen border security and stays safely ambiguous on what should be done with the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are already here. He says, "we'll have that discussion [after]" the border is secured.

"And until we build that border, we should neither have storm troopers come in and throw people out of the country nor should we provide amnesty," Santorum said in a September debate.

One-in-four Hispanics say they personally know someone who has been detained or deported by the federal government in the past year, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.

Then, there was the former senator's word fumble in a September debate, which also won't help his case with Latinos. When answering a question about how to attract Latino voters, Santorum accidentally referred to them as the "illegal vote" before quickly correcting himself, according to CNN's transcript of the debate.

“What Gov. Perry has done is he provided in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, maybe that was an attempt to attract illegal vote — I mean Latino — voters,” Santorum said.

Some maintain that the former Senator actually said "legal" instead of "illegal."

While Santorum says he'll attract Latino voters by appealing to the Catholic values of family and marriage, his hard line on another emotional issue may make him a hard sell in states with larger Latino populations than that of Iowa.

Can Iowa Predict The Latino Vote?

Latinos account for 16.3 percent of the U.S. population, but only 5 percent of Iowa's populace -- making the state an imperfect testing ground for Santorum's popularity with the important voting block. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that Latinos represented about one tenth of eligible voters in 2010.

Many pollsters believe Latinos, the nation's fastest growing minority group, decided the 2008 election in favor of President Obama in key swing states like Florida. Obama won 67 percent of the Latino vote in 2008, while George W. Bush won nearly half of the Latino vote in 2004.

Despite the President's record-setting deportation numbers in 2011, Latinos still say that they favor Obama over Republican alternatives in the 2012 election, according to recent Pew Hispanic reports.

While Santorum saw success in Iowa with what David Brooks refers to as the "white working class" of the Republican party, he might soon be saying adios to his presidential hopes if he can't win over Latinos.

Most Americans are not lazy and living off of welfare but if the pro-illegals couldn't use this is an excuse to allow in illegal alien labor what would they have? The solution is to put all "able-bodied" Americans to work after getting rid of all the illegal aliens on the job. The solution isn't to ignore our immigration laws and import millions of foreigners we don't actually need. Yes, your ignorance must be bliss.

Hispanics tend to be family-based, which is largely classified as a "Conservative" value. White American Conservatives mistake this with alignment with the broader Conservative platform/agenda, which also tends to be anti-minority.

The Republican appeal to Hispanics goes something like this:

We're mammals (maybe). You're mammals. Vote for us because we have something in common!

No way any Hispanic is gonna vote for a two face Bagger! The Republicans have thrown the Hispanics under the bus to accumulate pointers with the extreme right fascist! The republicans have consistently blamed Hispanic for everything wrong with nation especially it's economy, when in fact which is an alien concept to the Baggers is that Reganomics destroyed our nations which has enriched the wealthy elite and their corporations while millions are homeless and unemployed! So go fish else where cause we do not support your racist agenda!

Please show proof that the Republicans have blamed Hispanic "citizens" for everything wrong in this country. What's a bagger? Just who are the Republicans racist against? Please provide proof of that also.

What's a two-faced bagger? How have the Republicans thrown Hispanics under the bus? By not promising that they will treat their illegal counterparts as above our immigration laws? Wow, really? They do not blame Hispanic citizens for everything wrong with this nation, however their illegal counterparts are playing a role in at least part of it. So stop blurring the lines between Hispanic-Americans and Hispanic illegals. It is blatantly dishonest.

What "racist" agenda?

You're placing way too much importance on the Latino vote. Only 10 million of them voted in the last election compared to 150 million non-hispanic votes.

Quote: "84% of Latinos favor granting in-state tuition to unauthorized immigrants" and 91 percent were in favor of the DREAM Act"

Why is it that Latino-Americans are advocating for this? Would they be advocating for it if most illegals were Chinese for example? I think Maybe they should do some soul searching as to why they are so ethnically driven. We as Americans should seek to do what is best for our nation as a whole and respect our immigration laws and our right to enforce them. Would that be so hard for Latino-Americans to do?

No politican should pander to a group who only has a selfish, ethnically driven agenda. That isn't what this country is about.

Santorum has a much bigger problem than losing the Hispanic vote. His vociferous support of a national "personhood" law to outlaw all abortions and the most popular birth control, will result in a huge backlash from pro-choice voters.

Well Rick lost the black vote when he gave an interview and said black people should get off of , stop spending other people's money and get jobs. Rick shot himself in the foot with that one. Rick not only were your comments ignorant, but they were oh so wrong. Most people know that there are more white people on welfare.

the Latino vote is the Italian vote. Hispanics are not Latins. The Latin, language and Culture comes from Italy and not from Spain. Latin America is only a geographical location where languages derived from the Latin of Italy are spoken and it doesn't translate into Latino. Latin o is not a race either. No, a republican would not be a good choice for Hispanics.

Not only is the Latino vote out of reach for Santorum, I doubt that the big corporate money will be there either. Santorum is a religious zealot to say the least. From a corporate perspective, there is nothing religious about executing the Republican approved smash and dash on the wealth on this nation ... you can't easily profess a deep and profound faith when you are actively robbing the middle and poor classes of Americans in plain view.

You might try to promote the new concept of faith being espoused by the Republican party, which is ... it's OK to be a money grubbing hound ... if you are rich it is God's reward to you for your faith ... of course that goes directly against what is written in that old pesty book with the cross on the front that spells out the liberal words of Jesus "what ever you do for the least of my brothers .........." I don't think the corporate execs are likely to give the big bucks to Santorum ... nothing saintly about robbing people.

Santorum has a pretty good shot at winning South Carolina because of his appeal to white Christians. SC has picked every GOP nominee since 1980.

When I was young (in the 70's) I read Mad magazine. They did a piece about the "super patriot" who loves his country, yet hates about 95% of the people who live there. This sounds like Rick Santorum.
He has equated Latino people with illegal aliens, black people with welfare recipients, gay love with bestiality, people who practice Islam with terrorists, and women who practice birth control (or had an abortion) with murders. His entire world view seems to be based on racial, gender, class, and religious stereotypes. And anyone who doesn't share this world view is un-American.
I think the rest of us real Americans need to get him off of the national stage as soon as possible. He is making us look bad.
02:48 PM on 01/04/2012
Perhaps "latino people" are equated will illegal aliens because 60-90% of them vote for pro-illegal pro-amnesty open-border candidates like Harry Reid in Nevada and Raul Grijalva in Arizona. Open-end anything-goes liberals are correctly categorized as diseased, but handing over control of the electorite to invaders of your country is the pinnacle of ignorance.
