Starbucks Price Hike Will Affect Northeast, Sunbelt Regions Of U.S.

First Posted: 01/03/12 10:29 AM ET Updated: 01/03/12 01:49 PM ET

Are you one of those people who constantly grumbles about $4 lattes? Brace yourself: Starbucks, patient zero of that particular fiduciary epidemic, just announced that it's raising prices once again.

The latest Starbucks price hike primarily affects Northeastern and Southern states, and will see menu prices rise by about one percent overall, reports Reuters. But the increase in prices will not be an even one percent across the board. The cost of a "tall" latte in New York City, for example, will go up by 10 cents, but prices for "grande" lattes will stay where they are.

Starbucks attributed the move to a variety of factors, but one of them is surely commodity prices, which remain high. Another factor may be the New Year's increase in the minimum wage in several states.

If some prognosticators are right, though, this latest price hike could be just a taste of trends to come. In October, the Sustainability Director of Starbucks warned that climate change could harm coffee plants' growing conditions down the line -- which could make a $4 the late 21st-century's equivalent of penny candy.

UPDATE: The AP just filed a story on the Starbucks price hike. Its version includes some more details about the regions to be affected:

The Seattle coffee chain is raising prices about 1 percent in the Northeast and Sunbelt regions. Starbucks won't disclose all of the states its raising prices, but the regions include New York, Washington, D.C., and most Southern states excluding California and Florida.

Other cities where it will raise prices include Boston, Atlanta, Dallas and Albuquerque, N.M.

Starbucks is a bit overrated and pricy, but the pumpkin spice latte is something I cannot get enough of. I walked a mile in the snow for one yesterday!

No problem for me - I've never liked Starbucks burnt coffee taste! When they first arrived in downtown Chicago, my aunt bought some beans for me, I ground enough to make two cups, and made brewed the coffee. It tasted burnt. So, she brought the remainder back. Starbucks graciously took the remaining beans back and gave her a replacement. Same thing; this time she got her money back and refused a replacement. Years later I read an interview in a local paper when Starbucks was opening in the suburb where I worked. The manager of the new Starbucks was was asked what gave Starbucks its unique flavor - he said it was because they purposely slightly burn the beans.

It's time for a national or worldwide boycott of Starbucks.
Anyone who is stupid enough to spend 5 dollars or more for battery acid is insane.
McDonalds has Newmans Coffee for 1 dollar any size.
Duncan donuts coffee is much better.
Pete's coffee is far better.
The best way to bring a business to its knees is to take their business away,
Then watch the prices drop.
Spread the word.

A restaurant in my area serves a brand of coffee that is, actually, one of the Sara Lee brands. It's called Douwe Egberts. If you can find it, try it - it's incredible! Whenever I go to that restaurant (and I seldom eat in restaurants - too expensive!) not only do I drink the coffee, but I buy a pound of it to take home! Otherwise, I prefer a brand that is, I think, only available in the Chicago area - Stewarts.

You're wrong about coffee, Miroslav. Studies show that coffee prevents many diseases. Here's one link, but there are others.

Hi jacmed sometimes what is good for one isn't necceseraly good for another. I have drank a lot of joe over the years driving long haul it helped me to stay awake. I was addicted to it I had headaches from withdralls and the stomach was backing up with acid I was a mess. A lot of the drivers that know have stomach uslers and collen cancers.
Red reishy mushroom extract is helping a lot of them out. I have tried it an it does give a sence of well being somhow. Thank you for the link I will look. Thank you for posting.

The day I pay $4.00 for a cup of coffee will never happen. I guess I was one of the ones who grew up with the penny candy. I have no credit card debt either, and no I am not one of the wealthy, just wouldn't waste my money.

Considering that coffee is still one of the cheapest imports in the world I don't buy their justification. They are raising prices on something that hasn't even happened yet. Just an excuse. I don't go to Starbucks nearly as much as I used to. I prefer Intelligentsia coffee anyway. It tastes better and the people who work in the cafes actually know how to make a REAL latte. Not the faux-ones Starbucks makes.

Starbucks is overpriced? Eating/drinking out is overpriced. Starbucks will be fine, cause its customers (which do not dominate these boards) aren't going to be running over to McDonalds or DD anytime soon just because of a 1% price increase.

Buying coffee drinks at Starbucks is like paying $500,000 for a Buick LeSabre. Sure it's a good product, but a coffee maker, coffee grinder, coffee beans, milk, cinnamon, sugar and thurmos makes excellent beverages at about ten cents a cup and in less time than it takes to stand in line. $6 x 360 = $1260.

I've got all those at home, including my own espresso maker, and I do enjoy various cafe beverages in my own home (and I enjoy making them) but taste-wise, I have to say Starbucks still takes the cake. You can keep the LeSabre, I'll stick with the lattes.

California already got prices raised last month.
