Bill Gates, Elton John Among Top Donors To Clinton Foundation

Former President Bill Clinton started The Clinton Foundation with hopes to improve access to opportunities and services that would both change and save lives around the globe.

Apparently, big goals bring big names.

Elton John's AIDS Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are among the highest givers to the Clinton Foundation, Bloomberg reports.

The Gates Foundation has given more than $25 million, and The Elton John AIDS Foundation has given between $5 million and $10 million over the years.

Bloomberg reports that the median donation to the former Clinton's fund is just $50, and most donations are under $250.

“Each of them has helped improve lives and communities all over the world, proving that gifts of any amount can make a significant impact,” Clinton said in a statement obtained by the news outlet.

The Clinton Foundation allocates money to several nonprofits both nationally and internationally and was the launchpad for the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005. The Initiative brings together world leaders and activists to solve the world's biggest problems, with activists ranging from actor Matt Damon to Desmond Tutu.

Known for putting his money where his mouth is, Clinton recently pledged to end the year, by donating $2 for every $1 given to his fund for the duration of one week, the Associated Press reported.

So far, the Clinton Global Initiative has improved the lives of nearly 400 million people through its 2,100 commitments. When finished, these improvements will be valued at nearly $69.2 billion, according to the site.
