Top Baby Name Of The Future (VOTE)

First Posted: 01/05/12 02:49 PM ET   Updated: 01/10/12 03:14 PM ET

What’s the top baby name of the future? We want YOU to decide, so we asked Nameberry founders Pamela Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz to give us 16 popular names for each gender, names that are favorites today and heading toward Number 1. Your job: Choose the one in each pair that you like best. We’ll keep voting until we arrive at HuffPost Parents’ choice for the top baby name of the future.

To make things more fun, we've paired up the names by sound or theme. Many of the most stylish names today share several qualities: a fondness for the letter L, for instance, as in Isla and Lila. The -er and -en endings for boys -- Asher and Archer, Aiden and Hayden -- along with the Bella names for girls. Color, flower, and other nature names are big, as are vintage names such as Henry and Charlotte.

Why do fashionable baby names travel in pairs or groups? Credit the same indefinable forces that make us all suddenly start wearing galoshes and painting our living rooms pale aqua and eating grilled octopus for dinner. And with baby names, you also have to consider that most people want names that are the same but different, that capture the style of the times yet also stand apart, that are at once individual and easy to love.

What we want to know: Which of these names do you love best? Pick your favorite of each related pair... -- Pamela Satran & Linda Rosenkrantz, Nameberry.com

In our family there is a Jefferson. I love the name as it is a nice change from Jeffrey which was a family name but still retains some of it. It also brings to mind Thomas Jefferson and sounds good on an adult. There is only one problem, people sometimes assume it is his last name.

All of my children have expect one have odd names because I didn't want for them to have 6 other people in their class with their name like my daughter does. Anyway I have Jacquin (Jay- quin) Jerry-Lee, Kaylee Anastasia Marie, Seeley Richard Knight and Temperance Ann Louise.

Seeley and Temperance? REALLY?

I wanted to make sure my kids' names sounded as good on adults.....therefore, we have Benjamin, Samuel, Adam, and Elizabeth. Those are all family names also, and I've never heard my kids complain about them.I was given a name that was somewhat trend at the time, and I've hated it all my life. My regret is that we did not have more girls, as the family names of women on both sides are good, solid, and non-controversial.....names like Katherine, Anna, and Helen.

I'm so glad my baby's name is not on here...

My mother and father were expecting, and wanted, a boy, so when I turned up instead, they just added an 'A' to Paul and so I ended up Paula. I have always hated my name, not least because the only way to make it a pet name was to turn it back to the masculine form. I made sure my kids got 'old-fashioned' names, like James and William, so they can also have different forms of their names to suit their ages as they grow up.

When I worked on the OB floor, my favorites were Twinkle Asia and Precious Treasure.
12:48 PM on 01/09/2012
I won't argue their cuteness but I think about when that baby becomes a working adult. The resume of "Twinkle" or "Precious" might not be taken seriously. But again, they're def cute!

I was almost a Bernadette (Bree) after my grandmother, but my mother changed her mind - I've always loved the name.
07:36 PM on 01/07/2012
My criteria for naming my kids was whether the names passed the "resume test". When the kids grew up, would an employer look at their name and think it sounded professional. I have a Peter Jacob and a David Jarvis. Both first names are well known names, but neither boy has lots of kids in school with their name. There are no other Peters and only one other David in their school. David was very common in my (Gen X) generation, but it isn't in the current one.

Personally, I am sick of the names Aiden (Aaden, Aden, Ayden, Aedan..etc), Caden (Kaden), Jaden, (Jayden, Jadyn), Brayden, Hayden, Drayden... do you see where I am going with this? Parents, lets be original please.

Thank you for saying this. Thank you so much. This "last names as first names" crap needs to go too.

Can you imagine a 50 year old businessperson called Payton or Mikayla? What about a doctor called Makenzie or a president called Brystal? (Some idiot on Facebook named their child this. It is the single most awful name I have ever heard, and I've watched at least 30 episodes of Maury Povich, so I'm pretty sure I've seen quite a few awful names in my short life.)
04:35 PM on 01/08/2012
I work with a 30 year old woman named Payton, a sixty year old named Mikayla, and my doctor is Mac (Mackenzie) Branson. I've heard terrible names, but none of those are going to cause any problems in life. Brystal might have some rude comments from parents for the next few years because of Bristol Palin, but it's bay in Alaska, so I'm pretty sure people will get over it. No one seems to have problems with Hudson or other bodies of water.

So, yes, I can imagine business professionals with those names because they already exist. I'd worry more about naming kids things like 'Lightpost' or 'Christmas Tree'.

Thing is, when they're 50, those WILL be 50-year-old-sounding names.

If you had taken suggestions for this poll, I would have placed Arthur, Ethan, Bruce, Sebastian, Blake, Luke, Scott, Eric, and Christian on the list for boys.

For girls, Lauren, Sydney, and Aurora are as good any to me.

When I was in Junior High I knew a guy name Wellington Scott. We use to make fun of his name all the time. I mean his first name sounded like a last name and his last name sounded like a first name. It was so weird. I mean how do you end up with a name like Wellington Scott? And the strangest thing about it was no one called him just Wellington, we all use his first name and his last name. The teachers did it too.
In high school there was this guy who's nick name was "Bear." We never knew what his birth name was, we just called him Bear, the teachers did too. He even signed his papers "Bear." No one could get it out of him what his real name was, we even asked his mother, and she wouldn't tell us.
I met a woman at the DMV who's name was Ivory Coffy. I couldn't get over it. At least she had a decent job and didn't end up with a job that you would think an Ivory Coffy would have. I also knew a girl named Midnight Blue. She was named that because of her midnight blue eyes. It was the stupidest thing I ever heard of in my life. Her parents were from South Africa. They stayed here for like five years than they moved to back to South Africa.

Wellington. Now that's an unusual first name. I like it.

Whenever I see a list of popular baby names, I think of a cartoon I saw many years ago. It pictured an obvious class picture of elementary school kids with teacher. The caption was something like this: Row 1: Justin, Jennifer, Jennifer, Justin, Jennifer. Justin, Justin, Justin, Jennifer Row 2: Jennifer, Justin, Jennifer .....

I'm sure that each parent believed they chose a unique name.

Isla means Island in Spanish. Why would you name your daughter island?
11:26 AM on 01/09/2012
Well, I was born on Cape Breton Island and I don't live there anymore so I named my daughter Isla because it's origin is Scottish (Cape Breton is in Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia means "New Scotland"). I believe the Spanish pronunciation is ees-la whereas the Scottish pronunciation is eye-la. We've only ever been told it's a beautiful name.
