Greg McElroy Rips Jets Teammates: Backup QB Calls Says Gang Green Has 'Selfish Individuals'

First Posted: 01/05/12 04:17 PM ET Updated: 01/05/12 04:17 PM ET

At the conclusion of the New York Jets' season-ending loss to the Miami Dolphins on New Year's Day, the most pressing postgame concern was not the shocking 8-8 record of the two-time AFC finalists. Instead, everyone was wondering what exactly happened to ignite the heated argument in the huddle late in the fourth quarter that landed wideout Santonio Holmes on the bench during the final minutes as the Jets fought in vain to prolong their season.

It would turn out, perhaps not surprisingly, that the Jets' implosion and that heated argument were inextricably linked.

After the game, veteran running back Ladanian Tomlinson shed some light on the Holmes' incident, explaining that there were some players in the huddle who were upset with Holmes' demeanor.

"When you have a group of guys fighting their butts off and one guy, for whatever reason, their demeanors not with them, you're going to get some guys to say something to him and tell him how they feel. That's what you got today," L.T. said. Another Jets player, who requested anonymity, claimed Holmes has been a problem throughout the season and said he "quit a long time ago."

While there was no avoiding the fact the Jets' late-season swoon was caused by myriad problems on both sides of the ball, it seemed like the interpersonal issues were perhaps contained within the wiry frame of the unhappy wideout.

Not according to third-string quarterback Greg McElroy, who painted a picture of a locker room divided and populated with bad attitudes during an interview with 97.3 The Zone on Wednesday. Answering a question about the mood in the locker room, the Jets' rookie out of Alabama called out his teammates, as a group, for their selfishness.

"It's the first time I've ever been around extremely selfish individuals," McElroy said. "There were people within our locker room that didn't care whether we won or lost as long as they got theirs, they had a good game individually. And that's the disappointing thing."

McElroy went on to say that he thinks that the Jets' struggles throughout the year "led to a corrupt mindset in the locker room."

Some took exception to McElroy's comments. Erik Ainge, a former Jets backup quarterback, lashed out at the 23-year-old's comments and ripped him on Twitter.

"Someone tell McElroy to keep his mouth shut about the NYJ 'Locker Room' speaking in the media about your teammates, entitled brat!" he wrote.

Whether or not McElroy's comments are accurate, one thing we do know is that head coach Rex Ryan doesn't believe he had "the pulse" of the team.

Ryan lost his team's pulse by being 'The Mouth'. Sanchez lost his focus on being 'Broadway Mark'. Holmes lost his to his own ego. Too bad for the rest especially LT. Time to break it all up & start fresh.

Rex R is certainly his father’s son. Making guarantees his players can't live up to and inciting the opposing team is the cause for dissention. The blame game goes to the coach, not the players.

Ship the guys like Holmes down the road to Oakland. they'll fit right in there.

McElroy is the only guy in that locker run with his head screwed on correctly. He is a leader.

All evidence to the contrary. He just has a big mouth, and no respect from anyone in the NFL.

Rex Ryan's Jets have been lacking in discipline on the field and off. It's the same team as two years ago, only now, Ryan's lack of leadership has caught up with him.

Ryan spending to much time yappin in the media instead of reading the pulse of his team. Holmes wasn't part of the the 'Team', but neither was Ryan with his grandstanding.

When Ryan started upstaging the team with his big mouth the owner should have slapped him down.
07:22 AM on 01/07/2012
that's his style, the owner likes it. the problem is bad attitude teammates that need to go.

He kept it real, but as someone who was on the injured reserved list, all season, he made it sound as if he was suiting up and as if his leadership was being trumped by selfish players. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This kid did great in pre-season and Sanchez was sweating him. He is twice the passer that Sanchez is, and I do not mean to bash Sanchez--he has heart, but he isn't cutting it as a downfield passer. McElroy was able to do that in pre-season. We haven't seen the last of this kid.

Mark Sanchez just completed his third season, which is considered a dissapointment by many, because the team did not go to the playoffs. His first two seasons, HE led the Jets to the AFC championship game. Dude is a winner. He was definately the victim of a ridiculous coach, and when his contract is up, I hope he finds a better situation for himself, and let McElroy lead them.

This team is disintegrating rapidly. They need a stabilizing influence and Rex Ryan doesn't fit the bill. He's a professional blowhard.
07:28 AM on 01/07/2012
they just need to get rid rid of the garbage. you heard the kid say he loved playing for the coach.

guys like holmes don't get the ball as much as they want and they cop an attitude and lay down on the team

He's made enemies all over the NFL, not just the Jets' locker room. An entitled brat with an ego who has accomplished ZERO in the NFL? Yeah, he's got a BIG target on his back. He needs to start working on his post-NFL career plans now. And drop the "yankee" BS, goober.

He exposed the fact that there are toxic individuals in the locker room. He didn't point out any specific individual. Jets management knows who the malcontents are. This clears the way for them to move out the problem players.

Greg McElroy showed some real leadership by confronting those who are more concerned about themselves than the fortunes of the group.

McElroy said what everyone else was thinking, he did show some real leadership.

You know, it could be that the receivers wanted McElroy to start up until he got hurt. Maybe Sanchez never had their confidence.

As an Alabama grad, I bet Joe Namath is behind Mac.
