ADP: U.S. Companies Added 325,000 Private-Sector Jobs In December

Jobs December

NEW YORK (Steven C. Johnson) - Private-sector hiring surged in December as employers added 325,000 new workers while claims for jobless benefits fell, raising hope that recent labor market improvement would continue in 2012.

The ADP National Employment Report's December job tally surprised economists who had expected a 178,000 gain. It was also well above the 204,000 private jobs added in November.

"The number is stunning," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York. "This is another data point that shows our economy is healing. It fits in well with improvements we've seen in consumer sentiment, and obviously that's because there are more people getting paychecks, which is making everyone happier."

Joel Prakken of Macroeconomic Advisers, which helps produce the report, struck a note of caution, telling reporters that the December surge in hiring might have been caused in part by year-end seasonal factors and revisions were possible.

In the U.S. stock market, stock futures pared losses after the data while U.S. government debt prices fell slightly.

A more comprehensive government report due Friday is expected to show the economy added 150,000 public and private sector jobs last month, but the ADP report may cause some to revise that total upward.

Thursday's data "point to what should be a fabulous number tomorrow," said Todd Schoenberger, managing director at Landcolt Trading in Wilmington, Delaware. "We should welcome this positive news because clearly Santa Claus is still around."

A separate report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms fell to a five-month low in November.

But John Challenger, chief executive officer, said the two sectors that suffered the most job cuts in 2011 -- government and financial services -- look destined to struggle again this year.

The jobless rate is expected to have edged up to 8.7 percent as some Americans who had given up their search for work were lured back into the market, according to a Reuters survey.

Even so, economists say recent labor market trends have been encouraging. The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell last week for the fourth time in the last five weeks.

However, in December 2010, a surge in private sector hiring far exceeded the total job gain for that month reported by the government.

"Some caution is required," said Theodore Littleton, economist at IFR Economics, a unit of Thomson Reuters.

This is just a farce...tell us how many jobs were lost and then we will compare as to how good it was...or wait until next month, when the Christmas season workers are gone. there is over 4,000 walmart stores... they hire 10 at each there is 40,000 right there....lots of other chains hired short term work...love the fact that guy called the number "fabulous"...what will next month be when it has dropped tremendously?

You don't understand how this is calculated. It is seasonally adjusted. So you are simply wrong.

Oops, the seasonally adjusted report is the Dept of Labor report, not the ADP report. So I'm wrong.

But it is still not a farce. It is now 22 consecutive months of private sector jobs growth. That's after LOSING over 700,000 jobs PER MONTH when President Obama took office.

You right-wing/conservative/tp/Republicans really really dislike that the economy is picking up don't you? I mean you truly hate to see America do well when Obama is still President. It's sad, pathetic and a bit sickening the right-wing attitude.

If this keeps up, it's Obama in a landslide, especially against any one of the GOP "B" teamers currently running. I shudder to think how badly things would have to get for America to stoop to Mitt...

This isn't the Republican B team. Sadly this is the Republican A team. They are just an F team in any other decade.

Did he say "might have been caused by seasonal hiring"; puhlease, that was the only reason it happened. By the way; unemployment goes through cycles, up and down as do recessions but the sad part of this is that this recession would have been over in the norm of 15-18 months but because of O's failed policies it has taken much longer for just a small increase. It would be great if the partisan economists would compare this month/years numbers with 2007 rather than with last year's terrible numbers so we could have a "real" number to compare with. Silly me; it's election year so the spin is revving up.

Wow, those "complete failure" claims must be distorted. I guess painting yourselves as Christian Saints makes the deceit more palatable to those willing to follow blindly? Thay haven't learned a thing since the Bush years - Incredible

This can't be happening. That means the world has cycles. It goes up and down. OMG President Obama might take credit for this. Come on GOP, you can say "NO" is the reason for this.

Jobs were supposedly added according to one source, the govt has their own report coming out next week, things are oh-so rosy, but the unemployment rate is going UP AGAIN? Don't get me wrong, I hope things ARE turning around, and this country can get back to work. But I have come to expect to be disappointed by 'trends' and 'reports' and predictions, especially from this govt! I guess I'll believe it when I'M working again! Anyone hiring?

I am in southeastern VA. I have a Bachelors in Business Admin, with a Major in HRM and a Minor in Accounting, and over 30 years experience in both blue and white collar positions, including mid level management and executive positions for major international corporations.

I have also been called 'quite handsome', and a 'superior lover'. However, my modesty prevents me from providing details about any of that.

Let's do lunch..

"Any job is good enough." I never see the people who say this just take any jobs. A lot of my friends think Walmart is great and yet I never see them applying for work there.
The reality is just any job-is just any job. The politicans and corporations have to do much better for the people. Just good enough does not cut it. The kinds of jobs provided are of 3rd world status.

There are not proper words in our language to describe how the American voters feel about their miserable behavior. There are, however, votes and campaign contributions to democrats.

Especially from the union dues forced from the members who have absolutely no say as to where there money goes when it comes to politics.

May I just point out that 1 point does not make a trend? Note that the % of eligible workers in this country is still in the low 60's, indicating a huge untapped labor supply. We have a HUGE hole to fill that has only been getting bigger since 2007. Fortunately, it appears that in November-December the Globalists and their co-conspirators weren't digging quite as fast.
