Nickelback Is Not Trendy, According To Chad Kroeger

NEW YORK — Nickelback has had a number of Top 40 hits over the years, and although today's pop scene is dominated by dance music, the band doesn't plan to shift gears to attain past radio success.

"We don't look at what all the popular artists are doing. We're not chasing Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or any of those guys. They're doing fabulous doing what they're doing, and we're just doing what we do, and that's it," lead singer Chad Kroeger said.

"Obviously, there isn't a person in the world that would say, `You know Nickelback is so trendy.' And we're not. We don't care. We really just don't care."

The Canada-based act – which includes Kroeger's brother, Mike, on bass, guitarist Ryan Peake and drummer Daniel Adair – was named group of the decade by Billboard magazine and their 2001 breakthrough hit "How You Remind Me" was the decade's top rock song. Their best-selling album is 2005's "All the Right Reasons," which has sold 8 million copies in the U.S.

Peake pokes fun at the state of contemporary pop music: "Unless some famous DJ wants to make a huge, Euro-pop smash remix of our song! Call our label."

Nickelback's seventh release, "Here and Now," recently debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. Chad Kroeger says the key to their success – or any band's success – is the love among its group members.

"Look around at your band members and make sure that you really like those people," he said. "We can all name 1,000 bands, amazing bands, that haven't stood the test of time because they just couldn't get along."

Though happy with his band's career, Kroeger does have one regret.

"When I see the video for `How You Remind Me,' I just want to go back and beat myself up," the 37-year-old Kroeger said. "My hair was like super long and I had this big goatee, and I shot that video when I was super young, but I looked like I was like 40 years old in the video ... I really wish I could go back and snip, give a little trim."

I'd rather have root canal than listen to a band that sucks as badly as Nickelback This generation really got cheated on music... and few of them even know it.

There are a lot of good industrial and metal groups out there. Too heavy for radio but when i want rock i listen to them.
The old classic rock is pretty much stagnant .I don't see any new ACDCs on the horizon.

How else do you get top 40 radio play, Chad?

Probably because there's a shortage of classic rock groups in the world now that girly pop music has taken over.

For me, Nickelback is one of those bands that was OK to listen to when they first came out, but quickly grew stale, then grew annoying. The radio stations did it...overplayed every single until hearing just the first few notes would cause me to lunge for the radio dial. Many bands that fit this description are/were pop rock bands. Red Hot Chili Peppers is another. Linkin Park another.

This band truly rocks. This is the kind of rock and roll that makes those who have made it before them, smile. To see them is quite a cool experience. Long Live Rock!

Nickelback was a band I sort of liked, so when they made a stop in my city, I bought a couple of tickets. That was 3 years ago, and they have made me a lifelong fan, it was the best concert I have ever been to, they play GREAT live, and involve the audience like no one else. I have seen AC/DC..KISS...Metallica...just to name a few in my 40+years. I don't care what anyone else says, I will buy tickets until they quit doing shows.

Along with Florida governor Rick Scott, I've never met anyone that has admitted to liking Nickelback.

I find all the Nickelback hate to be the biggest "trend" and bandwagon jumping in recent music memory. I don't care for their music either, but for people to seemingly go out of their way to insult and hate the band as the worst ever? Sorry, but no. Sure, they are "radio pop rock" in an age when radio rock doesn't really exist anymore but nobody can deny they have had a number of hits, made millions of dollars and have millions of fans. Saying they "suck" and bashing them constantly just comes across as more petty and cliche than anything.

Then again, I don't understand why people who dislike ANY band feel such a need to bash them so much. There is more music options out there than I can even comprehend. Who cares if you don't like a band or think they suck. Don't buy their music and don't listen to "pop" or top 40 radio. Listen to what you like and spend that energy trying to spread the word about those bands.

It's probably a reaction to having to listen to them on radio. But I guess you get what you deserve if you listen to top 40 programming, which seems to be all there is out there. Plus it's sort of fun. Just say "Nickelback is crap" a few times. You get stabbed in the ear by a Nickelback song more than once, you want your revenge, however petty it may be. ;)

Lol. Touche, sir.

Although I try to listen to radio as little as humanly possible. That is why God invented the internet, cd burners and MP3 players.

It was actually bands like nickelback and 3 doors down that got me into music when I was younger. Then I found better music. Can't hate on the guys, but it's just not where I live anymore.

Yeah, I started out listening to stuff so bad when I was young (Poison? yeah,I know. Pretty bad, huh?) that it makes Nikelback sound like Tom Waits.

Luckilly, I don't live there any more either.

I like the fact Nickleback don't get all weird and go thru some stupid dance routine. They play and that is it. Similar to Pink Floyd. They didn't get into dancing and prancing either. Just play.

I love how this group has become the band that's cool to disparage, even though they sold 8 million copies of their album during the pirating download era. That's at least 8 million people who thought they were cool enough to plunk down 15 bucks.

Millions of people bought Milli Vanilli once too. Record sales doesn't mean it's quality music. It just means it was marketed well.

Exactly. There are and were many great bands that never got national or international exposure because of record label politics.

It means it was marketed well, exposing 8 million people to music that they liked well enough to pay for it. Just because it was marketed well and sold well doesn't automatically mean that it was bad music either. Beethoven's 9th symphony has been marketed well and sold well, but it does make it any less a masterpiece.

Not that anything Nickleback has recorded is equal to Beethoven's 9th. That's just an example.
