'Toddlers & Tiaras': Lady Gaga Inspires Meat Bikini, Egg Arrival (VIDEO)

Lady Gaga is a fashion icon, though her fashions aren't necessarily ready for the real world. Nevertheless, they've clearly made an impact on the junior pageant circuit. On "Toddlers & Tiaras" (Wed., 10 p.m. EST On TLC), 8-year-old Laci had a Gaga-inspired routine, complete with her arrival in an egg and a failed attempt at a meat dress.

Unfortunately, the egg spilled over when she attempted to get out of it, but ever the professional, Laci simply carried on. The meat dress didn't even make it that far.

"[When] we realized we were already late and realized we weren't going to have enough time for the meat bikini, it was really devestating," said her mother. Laci might have disagreed with that, though, as she was none too pleased when they were attempting to attach the meat to her swimsuit.

"Ah, it touched my leg!" she shrieked at one point, and at another she kept repeating, "It just dripped on me!" How could she have ever gotten through a routine if she was that squeamish already? Luckily, she didn't have to, and still took home "Personality Supreme."

I have never watched "Toddlers and Tiaras," although I was aware of it from seeing advertisements, and reading various scuttlebutt through the internet, such as this article. From the get-go, this program seemed to me to be exploitative and tasteless, and appears to me to be little more than an outgrowth of the tendency for the fashion industry and media to "sexualize" young children - an accusation often leveled at Abercrombie and Fitch, most recently for a "padded, push-up bikini top for 8-year-olds," and before that for a pre-teen thong.

And it all appears to be having its impact - over two years ago the Wall Street Journal reported that demand for child models was "way up," and families feeling an economic pinch were finding the $100-$150/hr modeling fees a strong attractant to get their kids into child modeling. Now we see a proliferation of child modeling websites, purporting to be 100% legal and 100% non-nude, which appears to be a mealy-mouthed way of saying "dressed as skimpily as possible without showing "the goods." And painted like hookers. These photos are taken with complete knowledge and consent of the parents, which only adds insult to injury, These sites charge membership fees to view the "premium content." It's quite clear these sites are marketing to pedophiles.

So, what gives? On one hand, we are fiercely protective of our children, on the other hand, some of us market them like...meat.

Some of these mothers are living through thier children.You often here the mothers commenting on it ."mini me" or "thats me up on stage". I agree as to the parents setting better examples..Other than outta shape moms with loud mouths.And my GOD, these mothers that stand in the audience and coach their child by imitation.Has any one told the mothers how utterly stupid they look! By the way, the coupon mother was absolutely ugly.Inside and out.Its a shame her pretty daughter doesnt have better self esteem taught to her.. It makes me sick to think of all the child molestors getting their rocks off.

The meat bikini was just wrong-full of who knows what. what kind of parent would think its a good idea for a meat bikini. Oh yeah, that would have wow'ed the judges-more like disgusted them. These parents are just stupid, do they not think of the damage they are doing to their kids? Sad that they really think that their bratty child is going to feel better about themselves later in life from doing the pageants. stop taking away their childhood, they are kids, not adults. The girls on that show are little spoiled brats, and their parents are egging it on.

i have seen this show and i must say some of the outfits these "mothers" come up with are horrific. i mean some of these innocent lil girls come out lookin like strippers and i dont know what all. all these women put these innocent lil kids thru all this just so they can live their glory days or fantasy life thru their children, some of these kids scream and fuss and dont even want to do it. some are really spoiled lil brats who need their butt spanked for the way they act and talk to their parents. i have seen some yell,hit and i dont know what all to their parents. this show really needs to be taken off the air and these pageants need to stop. the children are being robbed of their childhood and their innocence. child molestors are gonna be watching this and then they are gonna go after the children. the children in my opinion is being used as bait for child molestors.

I propose official complaints are raised against this show and the organizers who sensationality and sexualize children.

There should be a full investigation into the psychological impact of exposing children to value systems based on sex and money at such an early age, these girls are going to have so many issues later in life.

I finally watched a couple of episodes last night. Social services should show up at these pageants or pay visits to some of these people's homes. A perfect example would be to the home of mom Ashley and child Carly.

Because it is all ABOUT the moms. About them living through their Barbie Doll daughters. About them ignoring their own almost-across-the-board out of shape and overweight selves and drawing their self esteem from their child getting the title Ultimate Grand Supreme.

Their daughters would be much better served by seeing their mothers set a solid example in both physical and emotional health, than in being pimped out for some fanned together twenties and a cheap crown/sash. Last night's Coupon Queen mom is a perfect example.
