Chicago Area Cats, Dogs And Rabbits Up For Adoption (1/6) (PHOTOS)

While Chicagoans continue to recover from ringing in 2012, the new year has probably not felt all that much different for homeless area pets sitting in shelters, still waiting to meet the owners of their "forever" homes.

Starting off the new year with a bang, HuffPost Chicago this week welcomes two new area shelters to the fold. The Red Door Animal Shelter and the Tree House Humane Society have both begun to partner with our site as we continue to share weekly roundups of area pets available for adoption.

And this week comes a HuffPost first: a pair of rabbits who've patiently been awaiting a new home for some time.

Photos this week appear courtesy of the Naperville Area Humane Society, Felines Inc., Red Door and Tree House. To our knowledge, all animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date with their tests and vaccinations.

If this slideshow doesn't satisfy your cute animal-viewing fix, be sure to check out past features linked below the gallery either by scrolling down or clicking here. Many of the previously featured animals remain homeless -- those who've already been adopted are noted with a "Spoken For!" tag.

As always, if you have an adoption shelter success story you would like to share, please send a note (and a picture) to chicago@huffingtonpost.com and we will be sure to feature your pet's tail, er, tale.
