LG Google TV To BE Unveiled At CES 2012

First Posted: 01/06/12 01:54 AM ET Updated: 01/06/12 12:56 PM ET

SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Electronics Inc said on Friday it would unveil its first Google TV next week, joining Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co in partnering with the search giant to get a foothold in the emerging Internet TV market.

Google hopes to replicate the success of its Android mobile software in the TV market, but its attempt to conquer the living room has seen limited success so far due to a lack of web content and support from hardware manufacturers.

Google TV allows consumers to access online videos and websites on their TVs, as well as specialized apps such as video games. Currently it comes built-in on certain Sony television models and Samsung is also working with the U.S. firm to launch Google TVs.

LG said on Friday it would introduce its first Google TV next week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Google said on its blog that chipmaker Marvell Technology Group, chip designer MediaTek and TV manufacturer Vizio were also new partners for its Google TV service.

Grappling with slowing demand and cutthroat competition, TV manufacturers hope forays into the Internet TV market will help cushion squeezed margins.

Research firm DisplaySearch expects the global TV market to grow only 2 percent this year after no growth in 2011 due to soft consumer demand amid a weak global economy.

Why don't they make it portable like the Logitech's discontinued Revu or the Sony, so it can be used in any HD TV and people would have more choices to buy from.

meh, sidereel works fine for me on my revue...i would've gladly watched shows off the network's pages or hulu but they didn't give me that option. So now they won't get any ad revenue! Great move!

If you failed once why bother trying again? Doing the same thing again and expecting a different result is just insanity.

This TV over Internet market is evolving with increasingly capable devices which are severely limited by the fact that the legacy TV content providers want nothing to do with them. It's all piecemeal stuff, with certain providers offering their own direct streaming applications (e.g. TBS) but without any standards which would allow these feeds to be readily aggregated into a common platform.

Google can have all the device vendor cooperation they want, and it still wont help them deliver a compelling TV platform. Even Apple does not have any clear route to a TV platform. The TV industry does not want to submit to the iTunes treatment like the music industry.

You don't think that cable TV providers monitor your channel and show selections?

No, not really I have a digital antenna, no cable tv box and a ROKU on the internet side. Maybe they could figure out what I watch, who knows.
Amazon has an idea however, they monitor their movie and tv portion of the ROKU service.

Can you tune in to your local channels that aren't on the network?

Conquering the livingroom is all about bringing the best user interface with the most content. Right now, the Cable companies still have way too much power and are hoarding content at the expense of the consumers because the cable companies don't know SQUAT about providing access and targeted recommendations to all that content the provide in an easy way. Example, Cox Communications. I just cancelled cable (again), because Cox continues to miss expectations on making the most of all the content they offer. How many times have you tried to find something, flip the channels, and there's just NOTHING on? Too many times for me to continue under that model.

Companies like Google, Netflix, Hulu, etc., and making dents and changing the game, but that awful cable box with dreadfully limited DVR space and absolutely archaic user interface still owns the livingroom. Why is this?

Focus on content and a la carte personalized programming (NOT PACKAGES) with the content providers, and profits are endless.

Packages are anti-competitive, restrictive practices. Payment should be by the program and in that program, by the minute. You switch it off. You don't pay.

I like Apple, but I am currently working at CES 2012 setting up the LG booth and I have to say that the new LG Smart TV with Google TV is pretty cool. The problem will be bandwidth caps that are set forth by our cable companies. Especially after Comcast, etc. start losing revenue to the internet. If everyone watches internet content on their TV instead of cable, advertisers will disappear, and our rates will go up and so will the caps.

The USA needs to adopt the European model for internet service. They have price competition, no corporate monopoly, and the service providers don't get involved in content. Their fiber backbone is also much faster than our system.
It appears to mirror the European cell phone networks where the user pays for the time they actually use and not a time subscription.

My Wireless Vizio 42" HDTV has all kinds of apps, Netflix, TWiT, and more. I have my Nov2007 white macbook hooked up to it. I have AppleTV puck which I use Airplay to mirror my ipad 2 onto my Vizio. My wife and I haven't watched movies or TV shows on actual TV channels in over a year yet my ipad 2 has a NBC app, an ABC app and I can watch CBS through my browser.

I'm sure there are plenty who have an even better set up than this. Times they are changing
